X1/9 Blasts Back

he famous Fiat X1/9 is on its way back! A top-secret prototype reveals the future of the Italian firm's sports car line-up. And it could be here sooner than you think, because the concept will be unveiled to the world at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

Produced by the Instituto Europeo di Design (IED), the roadster is intended to be a spiritual successor to the legendary X1/9 of the Seventies. It has been officially endorsed by Fiat and roof expert Webasto, and has already been dubbed the X1/99.

The original X1/9 was based on the Bertone Runabout concept first displayed at the 1969 Turin Motor Show. After going on sale in 1972, the road version enjoyed an 18-year production run. The mid-engined two-seater was renowned for its exceptional handling and value for money - attributes which would still

attract buyers today.

Based on the Punto platform, the X1/99 is just over four metres long. Inside, the sports car has a 2+2 seating arrangement, with long doors giving easy access for both front and rear passengers. The final design of the roof mechanism will be revealed in detail at Geneva, and is sure to feature the latest in sliding top technology.

It's not yet known whether the car will become a production reality, but the team behind it will be keen to assess public reaction. If given the green light, the X1/99 could appear in showrooms by 2007. This is the first of several models to be penned by IED, with the firm already working on a project commissioned by Ferrari.

Secondo voi questa X1/99 potrebbe diventare l'erede di Barchetta?

Per me potrebeb essere visto che la nuova Barchetta, nei programmi di FIat, è prevista proprio per quest'anno.

Chissà se questa X1/99 sia, in realtà, un prototipo a Ginevra per accumulare consensi dal pubblico e, poi, lanciare il modello definitivo a Francoforte con la "199".

Già, ad esempio ci vedrei benissimo lo stand Fiat al Salone di Francoforte con le novità "199" a 3 porte, a 5 porte ed erede di Barchetta, oltre alla Fiat SUV.

Intanto 199 presentazione a Francoforte....vendite un paio di mesi dopo...fonte la stampa...

Comunque questo frontale e' la giusta sintesi tra quello della Coupe' e quello della Barchetta.Spero che non lo sprechino e lo mettano in produzione.

Poi una 199 coupe/cabriolet ci vuole.Molto meglio presentare questa che togliere il tetto alla 199...verrebbe la solita vasca da bagno
