Tata Motors to introduce India's first mini - truck Tata Ace

Tata Motors has issued the following press release:

Tata Motors, India's largest integrated automobile manufacturer showcased Tata ACE, the country's first indigenously developed mini-truck last week. Designed for both rural and urban use, the ACE is powered by a unique twin cylinder 16bhp IDI 700cc diesel engine. With the launch of the mini-truck, the Company will introduce a new category in the commercial vehicle segment. The versatile, high performance and efficient mini-truck, ACE, comes close on the heels of the Company's foray into fully built buses - the stylish Globus coaches and Starbus range of contemporary buses, which have received resounding acceptance since their launch in March 2005.

Development of road infrastructure has led to an increase in the distribution of goods across the country, based on the hub and spoke model. Recognizing the growing trend and anticipating the need for a last mile distribution vehicle, Tata Motors developed Tata 207DI, a pick-up vehicle designed to carry larger and heavier payloads in the sub-2 ton category. The Company also anticipated an opportunity in the sub-1 ton payload segment, which is witnessing significant growth and is currently being serviced by 3-wheelers. In what is considered a rare feat in automotive parlance, Tata Motors has indigenously developed a reliable and cost effective 4-wheeler for the sub-1 ton payload segment with a water-cooled, twin cylinder diesel engine, making the ACE among the few mini-trucks in the world to be powered by a diesel engine.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ravi Kant, Executive Director-Commercial Vehicles Business Unit said, "We believe that leadership position is not only about market share, but also about foreseeing future prospects. The ACE bears testament to the Company's consistent efforts to identify new categories and develop logistics solutions that will improve the lives of people." He further added, "Innovative engineering, contemporary design and cross-functional research have been the driving force behind the development of the ACE. We involved intensive research and consumer feedback mechanisms while developing the mini-truck and the result is a reliable, safe and efficient commercial vehicle with contemporary car–like features. The ACE is a tribute to the resilience and pioneering spirit of the design and engineering team at Tata Motors ably supported by its suppliers and vendors."

The ACE has an ergonomically designed, all-steel cabin with a display of car-like features including elegant two-toned seats, clear instrument cluster, utility trays, magazine pockets, twin-blade, twin-speed wipers and combination switches. The conveniently positioned gearshift lever and parking brake enhance comfort in ride and handling.

The ACE meets all Indian safety norms-including frontal crash, roof crush and rear wall strength. To ensure the safety of the driver and co-driver seat belts are standard fitment. Disc and drum brakes in the front and rear respectively ensure high performance in sudden braking while the large windscreen and rear window allows for higher level of vision and clarity.

The ACE with its powerful engine and comfortable interiors provides flexibility to the operator to run additional trips up to 500kms per day without stops for refueling. The mini-truck is versatile and adapts seamlessly to different terrains and road conditions. Apt for urban and rural use, the 4-wheeler has the ability to carry a variety of payloads and has the agility to navigate narrow by-lanes owing to its turning radius of 4.3 metres.

ACE will be launched in a phased manner, initially available across the wide network of dealerships in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Union Territory of Pondicherry.

The ACE enjoys the TATA Advantage of a 36000 km/ 12-month warranty on the vehicle. ACE owners can avail of service across the nationwide network of sales/ spares/ service points set-up even in small towns in an effort to enhance customer convenience.

Tata Motors also provides a comprehensive Annual Maintenance Contract Facility under the Sampoorna Seva Scheme that ensures superior hassle-free service.
