Enthusiasts seeking the perfect vehicle to personalize will hit the jackpot with this year’s GM portfolio at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, which features all-new, full-size pickups, SUVs, crossovers and cars tricked out for the streets to the slopes and every conceivable surface in between. They include a one-of-a-kind Chevy Silverado off-road concept designed in conjunction with NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Jr. – a successor to Junior’s “Big Red” Silverado – and a low-riding Orange County Choppers Silverado hauler concept inspired by the styling cues of the famous bike-building Teutul family.

This year’s GM SEMA lineup also heralds the return of three formidable numbers – 4-2-7 – as in the Chevy Silverado 427 – a concept that demonstrates the new Silverado’s powerful performance parameters. Under the hood of the Silverado 427 is GM Powertrain’s 7.0-liter LS7, the same Gen IV small-block V-8 that powers the Corvette Z06.

"Talk about American muscle – our all-new family of full-size SUVs dominates the segment, and our all-new, full-size pickups are positioned for similar success,” said Michael Jackson, GM North America vice president of marketing and advertising. “Our new pickups were designed and built with personalization in mind, and it’s great that customizers and enthusiasts agree.”

Twenty-seven vehicles will be on display all week in the GM SEMA booth, including 14 Chevrolets; two Cadillacs; four GMCs; two HUMMER H3s; two Pontiac Solstices; two Saturns; and one Buick Lucerne partner vehicle. There will also be a top-secret performance car, developed in conjunction with one of GM’s more notable celebrity partners, in the stand.

Cadillac teams up with DUB magazine for a unique spin on the Escalade EXT. In addition to the three Silverado concepts, Chevy features pickups and SUVs decked out for both on- and off-road adventures and that pay homage to Chevy’s relationships with the U.S. Ski Team and Major League Baseball. GMC shows off a Sierra NFL Crew Cab with an NFL interior and exterior theme; a Sierra Texas Extended Cab to fend off pesky competitors in the biggest-selling pickup market in America; a Yukon Denali XL “Big Max” that’s the most capable, feature-packed, powerful Denali ever; and a Sierra All Terrain Crew Cab.

Crossover SUVs get their due at SEMA, too: The Cadillac SRX Sport, which receives a significantly redesigned interior for ’07, gets a Seventh Avenue makeover by upscale women’s clothing designer Dana Buchman. The Saturn Outlook Adventure shows how accessories can help the all-new crossover complement a customer’s outdoor lifestyle.

And speaking of the outdoors, HUMMER brings two H3s to Vegas – an E85 ethanol-capable model with available genuine HUMMER Accessories; and the H3 Open Top, with a canvas roof by ASC and decked out with real HUMMER accessory products.

In addition to trucks and SUVs, GM will feature a 1969 Chevy Camaro customized by “Mr. October” himself, Reggie Jackson, and Buick makes its first custom partnership appearance in the 43-year history of SEMA with Rick Bottom’s street-smart interpretation of the Lucerne full-size sedan, the CXX Luxury Liner. Buick has 10 other customized Lucernes spread throughout the show.

Two ultra-performance versions of the hot-selling Pontiac Solstice will be on display, a GXP-R concept and a Sports Car Club of America race-prepared Solstice Club Sport Z0K. The newest star of SCCA, Solstice finished its debut season with three National Championships – one in Showroom Stock B Club Racing, and one each in C Stock Open and C Stock Ladies Solo autocross competition.

The GXP-R is a concept of a new turbocharged Solstice model that would include restyled front and rear fascias, a more aggressive spoiler, 19-inch cast chrome wheels and multiple other enhancements.

In addition to the Solstice, Saturn will show off Gravana Speed Shop’s interpretation of the Saturn Sky roadster. Gravana, working in conjunction with GM Design, has pushed the Sky’s styling to the limits with its highly customized concept treatment that enhances the sleek, crisp and modern lines of the production vehicle while providing a cutting-edge visual design appeal.

GM also will show off a growing portfolio of crate engines and accessories designed and engineered specifically for GM vehicles by GM. GM’s accessory portfolio for the full-size pickup trucks and SUVs is proof that these vehicles were designed with personalization in mind. It is the most comprehensive ever, with more than 100 products designed in concert with the trucks at the GM Accessory Design Studio.

New electronics offerings include the industry’s first application of noise-canceling headphones; a portable overhead DVD entertainment system with a whopping 10-inch screen; an advanced, long-range remote start system with a LCD key fob readout that provides key vehicle information, such as fuel level and tire pressure; and Personal Audio Link, an innovative iPod integration accessory that lets users tote their personalized playlist in their personalized vehicle.

Jackson said shows like SEMA help showcase the ingenuity of GM engineers and designers, and let customers know what they can create in their own garages. "We're providing our aftermarket partners, our own accessories and Performance Parts operations and automotive enthusiasts with the best vehicle canvas on which to create parts, pieces and components that look cool and go fast,” he said. “These vehicles feature beauty, race-proven technology and production components that real people can buy and drive – today.”

While he’s normally associated with the Chevy Monte Carlo SS racecar he drives on Sundays, Dale Earnhardt Jr. also is an enthusiastic truck aficionado – especially those trucks that perform best off the road. GM teamed up with Earnhardt to design and build the ultimate Silverado off-roader, dubbing it the Dale Earnhardt Jr. “Big Red” Silverado.

The Dale Earnhardt Jr. “Big Red” Silverado is based on the all-new, 2007 Chevy Silverado crew cab and features custom exterior appointments, an off-road-ready suspension, one-off custom 20-inch wheels at Dale Jr.’s request, a custom interior and more. This one-of-a-kind Silverado builds on Earnhardt’s personal notion of off-road enjoyment, which was previously conveyed in his personal truck – a previous-generation Silverado named “Big Red.”

“The ‘Big Red’ Silverado is the ultimate expression of off-road trucks,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. “It is inspired by Dale Jr.’s personal and modified Silverado, but takes his concept to an entirely new and exciting level.”

Earnhardt collaborated with GM designers on the truck, visiting the GM Design studio in Warren , Mich. to discuss the exterior and interior enhancements, which include all-new front-end sheet metal and rear fenders, as well as a “flying bridge”-type roll bar with integrated off-road driving lamps. The interior is as luxurious as the exterior is off-road-capable, with rich, black leather upholstery and other details.

“This truck has Dale Jr.’s personality woven all through it,” said Peper. “It even has a locomotive horn that was his idea; when it blows, you know for miles around who’s coming up the trail.”

The Dale Earnhardt Jr. “Big Red” Silverado is powered by GM Powertrain’s 6.2L Gen IV V-8 engine, a high-output, all-aluminum engine with variable valve timing that produces 380 horsepower and 417 lb.-ft. of torque. It transfers its power to all four wheels via a Hydra-Matic four-speed electronically controlled transmission. The front and rear axles are equipped with 3.73 gears and Eaton ELocker electronic locking differentials, which help the truck deliver exhilarating performance with tall off-road tires. Stopping power is enhanced with a set of Baer disc brakes, including six-piston calipers and 15-inch cross-drilled rotors in the front and twin-piston floating calipers with 13-inch cross-drilled rotors in the rear.

Exterior flair

The commanding stance and flared bodywork of the “Big Red” Silverado combine for a menacing presence. All of the front end sheet metal, including the bumper, fenders, hood and grille are unique to the Dale Earnhardt Jr. Silverado, as are the rear fenders and rear bumper.

The front end design evokes the look of Baja racers, with a high-mounted, brush guard-type wraparound bumper, which conceals an integraed 6,000-pound Warn Winch. The brush guard bumper is fully integrated into the design and contours of the Silverado, extending out toward the flared front fenders. The large fender opening and box-type flares accommodate both the large off-road tires and the vertical travel of the front suspension. The hood also is custom and features a front-opening air intake scoop, which further adds to the truck’s powerful appearance.

Like the front fenders, the Dale Earnhardt Jr. “Big Red” Silverado’s rear fenders feature large openings and boxed flares. At the top of the rear fenders, a unique roll bar is enhanced with a flying bridge-style extension that incorporates housings for large off-road driving lamps. The flying bridge extension is integrated with the design of the Silverado’s cab and rear fenders.

At the rear is a custom roll pan, with four, large six-inch-diameter exhaust outlets exiting beneath the center of the truck. There is no tailgate, leaving open access to the cargo bed which, like off-road racing trucks, is equipped with mounted spare tire and wheel.

The “Dale Earnhardt Jr. Big Red” Silverado is painted with a unique base coat, mid-coat and clear coat system. The base coat is a custom mix with Spectra Flair additive; the mid-coat has a red tint hue. The Spectra Flair additive in the base coat combines with the mid-coat to provide a unique metallic appearance. The top clear coat application gives the paint finish a mile-deep shine. Subtle “Dale Jr.” signature and “8” graphics are found on various areas of the body and chassis.

Serious stance

The stance is achieved with a raised suspension and the large, off-road wheel/tire package. A Rancho four-inch lift kit, with adjustable front and rear shocks, is used, along with GM front coil springs and re-arched rear leaf springs. Off-road skid plates and other underbody shielding are employed to protect vital chassis and engine components when driving over rocks and other unseen obstacles.

Befitting this one-off off-roader, it wears unique, GM-designed 20 x 12-inch wheels. These CNC-machined wheels have a bold, deep-dish design. They feature 5.125-inch backspacing in the front and 3.375-inch backspacing in the rear, which helps push out the wheels to the edge of the vehicle, enhancing the rugged look of the “Big Red” Silverado while simultaneously providing increased off-road driving stability and a lower center of gravity.

The fenders have larger openings and are flared to accommodate large, off-road tires mounted on the GM-designed 20-inch deep-dish wheels.

Interior details

The Dale Earnhardt Jr. “Big Red” Silverado’s cabin is trimmed all in black, with Ebony leather-covered seats with Gloss Ebony leather piping. Black also is the color of the Providence headliner, carpet and trim plates, which have glossy, “piano black” appearance. Spectrum Cubic metallic soft-touch paint was applied to the door switch plates, instrument panel and control panel, providing a unique, high-tech appearance.

The interior simultaneously conveys luxury and an all-business attitude, owing to the truck’s off-road capability. It’s the perfect environment for a driver who’s at home in race vehicle, but seeks a more comfortable environment when relaxing – even if that means crawling over rocks, slogging through rivers and flying over dry riverbeds.

With a potent, 641-horsepower, a new LSX-based 454-cubic-inch small-block V-8 and the classic looks of the 1969 Camaro, legendary baseball player and ardent car collector Reggie Jackson has a muscle car as strong as his World Series batting record. Jackson partnered with GM Performance Parts (GMPP) and the GM Performance Division (GMPD) to build a one-of-a-kind modern muscle machine that serves as a developmental showcase for GM’s new LSX family of performance engine components.

The powerful LSX 454 small-block engine is backed by a heavy-duty six-speed manual transmission and a sturdy 12-bolt rear axle with 3.91 gears. Additionally, Jackson ’s Camaro features a host of custom features, including a scorching red hue derived from the Camaro concept vehicle, contemporary suspension upgrades and a black leather interior with baseball-stitched upholstery.

“Reggie’s Camaro is a great collaboration that represents the latest in power from GM Performance Parts and the style of today’s multi-use muscle cars from GM Performance Division,” said Lisa Reffett, marketing manager for GM Performance Parts. “Reggie’s participation was instrumental, as he helped guide the design of the Camaro and even helped build the engine with racing legend Warren Johnson.”

Buildup of the Camaro will be featured on Hot Rod TV on ESPN this March, with footage shot of the car’s build, engine assembly at Warren Johnson’s shop, a tour of Jackson ’s collection, testing at the GM Proving Ground in Milford , Mich. , and more.

“It is an exciting car and was an exciting project to be involved with,” said Jackson . “GM was involved in every stage of the buildup, so this is very much a ‘new-old’ Camaro built to OE specs.”

Inside the LSX from GMPP

The 454-cubic-inch small-block V-8 in Jackson ’s Camaro is based on GMPP’s new LSX Bowtie Block cylinder block and other engine components. The cast iron LSX block was designed for the creation of high-horsepower, large-displacement engines based on GM’s Gen IV small-block engine architecture. The iron block enables engine builders to use traditional displacement-enlarging techniques to create large-displacement small-block engines of 500 cubic inches or more. The LSX block is also designed with a thick deck and strategic cast-in strengthening features that support high-horsepower supercharged and nitrous-oxide combinations.

Jackson helped build the engine with famed NHRA racer Warren Johnson, who was instrumental in the development of the LSX block. For the Camaro, a simple but effective combination employing a single four-barrel carburetor and carefully matched cylinder head and valvetrain components was employed.

The cylinder heads are prototype LSX heads, which are derived from the LS7 7.0L engine found in the Corvette Z06. They feature six head bolts rather than five, for increased cylinder head sealing – an attribute that builders of supercharged engines will appreciate. Bridging the LSX heads is a new GM Performance Parts four-barrel intake manifold designed to match the rectangular ports of the LS7 head. The manifold is already available from GMPP, allowing customers to run a carburetor on LS7 crate engines. Atop the manifold is a Holley 850-cfm carburetor.

An ignition driver is all that’s required to change from stock-type EFI to carburetion, and Jackson ’s engine uses a custom MSD Ignition driver that is designed for GM’s Gen III and Gen IV V-8 engines. With the ignition driver connected to the distributorless ignition system, the ignition timing is automatically set at start-up.

The bottom end of the engine uses a Lunati rotating assembly with forged parts and Mahle pistons that combine with the LSX heads to deliver a pump-gas-friendly 11:1 compression ratio. A custom-grind camshaft was sourced and Comp Cams supplied the remainder of the valvetrain components.

At Warren Johnson’s dynamometer facility, the LSX engine produced 641 horsepower and 611 lb.-ft. of torque. More than the peak numbers, however, is the engine’s Kansas-flat power band. The engine makes 520 lb.-ft. of torque at only 3,000 rpm, with torque rising steadily throughout the rev range.

“The engine makes a mountain of torque at just about any rpm,” said Johnson. “The best part is this isn’t an exotic combination. It was put together with off-the-shelf parts that either are available now or will be shortly through GM Performance Parts.”

In other words, it’s a combination that is easily reproduced as the family of LSX parts and engines grows.

To complement the power packed into its 454 cubic inches, the LSX in Jackson ’s Camaro was dressed with powder-coated accessories and custom rocker covers. The engine retains a classic look at first glance, but a second look reveals the individual coil packs and other features that identify it as a 21 st-century small-block. Stainless Works fabricated a custom exhaust system, including ceramic-coated headers.

Drivetrain and suspension details by GMPD

The LSX engine in the Camaro is backed by a beefed-up Tremec T56 six-speed manual transmission. It is equipped with a heavy-duty clutch to stand up to the engine’s considerable torque, channeling it via a custom aluminum driveshaft to a Detroit Speed & Engineering-built GM 12-bolt rear axle. The axle is fitted with an Eaton Detroit Locker Truetrac locking differential and 3.91 gears, which turn strengthened axles that are connected to 18-inch custom-design Budnik rear wheels and Goodyear high-performance rubber. Matching wheels and tires are found up front.

To give the Camaro the agility and cornering capability enabled by the wide rolling stock – and spurred on by the 641-horse 454 engine – the engineers at GMPD had to harness the power. To do that, the front and rear suspension were replaced and updated with components from Detroit Speed & Engineering (DSE). Founded by former GM engineers, DSE offers a coil-over-shock front suspension system that replaces the first-generation Camaro’s original setup. It includes tubular control arms and Koni monotube shock absorbers. It was adapted to Jackson ’s Camaro, giving the car the driving reflexes of a modern sports tourer.

At the rear, a DSE “deep tub” kit is employed. The QUADRA Link rear suspension, with Koni coil-over shocks, allows the mounting of a narrowed rear axle. A narrowed axle was needed to make room for the nearly 12.5-inch-wide rear tires. But even with the ultra-wide rear treads, grip is all too easy to overcome when calling up even a small bit of the LSX engine’s deep well of torque.

Matching the modern handling is an aggressive, four-wheel disc brake system from Brembo. It features large, cross-drilled rotors at all four corners, with four-piston calipers in front and four-piston calipers in the rear.

“With the suspension and brake upgrades, this vintage Camaro handles and stops like a new Corvette,” said Jackson .

Classic looks, inside and out

Although its engine and underpinnings are thoroughly modern, the silhouette of the car is pure vintage Camaro. Jackson pulled the car from his 100-plus personal car collection and, with the help of GMPP and GMPD, it was restored and transformed. And while it looks like an all-stock Camaro body, several subtle changes were made to enhance its appearance. The bumpers, for example, were brought in closer to the body, for a smoother, tighter appearance.

The front-end features a 1969-vintage Rally Sport grille, complete with “hideaway” headlamps. The body also has classic Camaro styling cues, including a cowl-induction hood and rear spoiler. Other subtle changes include the relocation of the market lights. California-based Classic Industries supplied all of the restoration parts, including new chrome trim pieces.

A bright red color that matches the Camaro concept vehicle was sprayed by Detroit ’s Trakon Kustoms. A Jackson-signature checker flag logo is found on the cowl induction scoop and the rear spoiler, while LSX logos adorn the fenders and taillamp panel. LSX logos also grace the interior, which melds the classic Camaro look with contemporary upgrades.

The instrument panel is fitted with carbon-fiber-face Auto Meter gauges, located in housings that mimic the angled gauge placement of the original ’69 Camaro interior. Also, the original seats were replaced with new bucket seats from a Cobalt SS. They were re-trimmed in black leather and feature baseball-style stitching. Pat Russell, of PJ’s Trim, hand-stitched the seats.

Mr. October

Sports fans know Reggie Jackson as “Mr. October,” the player who racked up 10 home runs during his appearance in 27 World Series games – including three homers as a New York Yankee in the deciding game of the 1977 championship. Off the field, he is a passionate Chevy muscle car collector, having amassed a large collection of vintage restored and modified examples. The collection is continually changing, as Jackson constantly adds to and sells from the collection. Over the years, he has owned some of the rarest and finest example of Chevy muscle cars, and his reputation in the collector car world is renowned.

Picture this ... It's Halloween in Las Vegas, and illusionist Criss Angel, star of the A&E television series "Mindfreak," is ready to unveil a mysterious magic-themed custom vehicle. It's dark, extremely loud, unusual, completely customized, and a little bizarre.

On October 31st, 2006, the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) trade show will again welcome over 100,000 aftermarket automotive industry professionals to the Las Vegas Convention Center for its annual conference. This event attracts the A-list of the auto industry and custom car builders, and is considered the Super Bowl of the aftermarket business.

Northern Illinois-based RealWheels Accessories, along with the efforts of over 20 sponsors, has been working all summer on the "Mindfreak H2" with the help of award-winning illusionist Criss Angel. "Every year people ask us how we will possibly top our previous show vehicles," says RealWheels vice president Jhan R. Dolphin. "I've always been a big fan of magic, and this year's SEMA show opening on Halloween presented us with the perfect opportunity to create something very unusual. When I shared our idea with Criss, he was thrilled to be part of the project."

Halloween 2006 is a big day in the magic community, as it marks the 80th anniversary of Harry Houdini's death, undoubtedly the world's most famous magician. The unusual custom Hummer project was built in the spirit of Criss Angel's A&E series "Mindfreak." "The more you look at this vehicle, the more interesting and unusual things you'll find," adds Dolphin. "Even original artifacts from Houdini's era have been discreetly added into design features of the Mindfreak Hummer from the famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, and from the Martinka Magic Shop in New York, once owned by Houdini himself."

"Our greatest enjoyment from building a project of this scale is the reaction from people that see it, point at it, and photograph it to share with others," says Dolphin. "We plan to make it available at events all over the country during the next 18-24 months."

Working in conjunction with GM Design, Gravana Tuning – a highly regarded supplier of aftermarket accessories – has pushed the Saturn Sky to the stratosphere with a highly customized concept. The Gravana Tuning Turbo Saturn Sky delivers even more of what roadster buyers want: all-around performance and “stop-dead-in-your-tracks” design.

By adding a Hahn Racecraft 16G intercooled stage 3 turbocharger to the Sky’s 2.4L Ecotec engine, the Gravana Tuning concept returns 348 horsepower and 341 lb.-ft. of torque. Road-hugging handling is enhanced by an adjustable coil-over-shock suspension system that can lower the vehicle by as much as 3 inches – without changing the spring rate. Body roll is virtually non-existent with the addition of 25 mm front and 28 mm rear stabilizer bars. Massive 14-inch drilled and slotted front brake rotors, with four-piston calipers, provide additional stopping power, while a number of functional design elements serve to deliver more cool air into the engine and to extract heat from it.

Outside, the Gravana Tuning Turbo Saturn Sky complements the sleek, crisp and modern lines of the production vehicle, further enhancing its bold, cutting-edge design. Unique front and rear fascias, bodyside panels and rear center exit exhaust – not to mention the OZ Superleggera III 19-inch wheels and Goodyear Eagle F1 tires – give this special Sky a longer, lower, and sleek presence on the road.

Inside, the Gravana Tuning Turbo Saturn Sky features a carbon fiber console and dash inserts. The seat and door panels are finished in Katzkin leather and suede. Seven Boston Acoustics premium speakers and a Visteon eight-channel DSP 360-watt amplifier provide optimal aural enjoyment and complete the interior upgrade.
