New Audi A1 could save Brussels plant

Volkswagen Group’s new chief Martin Winterkorn has hinted that the company’s plant in Brussels could be used to build the upcoming Audi A1 minicar. Germany’s Der Spiegel reports that Winterkorn is planning to meet Belgian Prime minister Guy Verhofstadt later this week to discuss plans to build the baby Audi in Brussels. Winterkorn was one of the key backers of the A1 when he headed Audi so it’s no surprise that the car is high on his list of priorities now that he’s boss of VW Group.

Things looked grim at the plant after VW pulled out its Golf production line and plans from HQ to cut down on staff numbers. This latest news plus the possibility of another car being built in Brussels, Audi’s A3 cabriolet, is sure to please local plant workers. However, there are still suggestions that production will be moved to Audi’s plant in Hungary also

Audi’s upcoming A3 convertible was original thought to be built at a plant in Ingolstadt, then it was suggested that it might be produced in Hungary. Now it seems that Volkswagen’s new head Dr. Winterkorn has wants to assign production to the company’s plant in Brussels. A German newspaper reports that tax changes and the need to expand the Hungarian facility are the most like reasons for ruling that option out. The Brussels site on the other hand, has unused capacity now that it has stopped making the Golf.

Production of the 2+2 convertible is scheduled to start in early 2008, with cars arriving in showrooms just in time for the northern summer. Germany will still manufacturer most of the components for the new car, which will share much in common with the convertible version of the new TT.
