Plug-in hybrids are the next big wave in automotive technology, as the slew of concepts being released in anticipation of the Frankfurt auto show attest. Yesterday, Volvo announced its ReCharge plug-in hybrid concept. Today, it’s Opel’s turn to join the ranks.

The Opel E-Flex shares some technology and a similar frame with the Chevy Volt, although the E-Flex uses a diesel motor to charge the batteries. Range on battery power alone is expected to be in the neighborhood of 100km (62mi). Combined range is an impressive 775km (480mi). Once the lithium-ion batteries are sufficiently depleted, the diesel motor will kick in to top them up.

A completely unique feature of the E-Flex is the storage compartment designed to hold two Segway scooters. And don’t worry if your Segways need some more juice to make it from the lot to the shops: the E-Flex can charge them on the spot, directly from its electrical system.

An electric motor driving the front wheels generates up to 120kW and 320Nm, and is also capable of regenerative braking. The generator connected to the diesel engine provides 53kW of charging power. The fossil-fuel motor is a 1.3L turbodiesel with intercooler. When functioning solely to maintain the charge level, the motor can be adjusted to maintain between 1,500rpm and 1,800rpm. However, if the batteries are sufficiently depleted, and the entire power of the diesel is required, it can increase up to 3,200rpm.

The E-Flex’s futuristic looks blur the line between hatchback and micro-van. The extensive glasswork should provide excellent forward and side visibility, although the blocky C-pillars and a pillar down the center of the rear window may hinder rearward vision.

Il salone di Francoforte 2007 verrà (forse) ricordato come autentico trampolino di lancio della tecnologia plug-in: dopo il recente annuncio della Volvo ReCharge, tocca a Opel presentare un prototipo con la medesima concezione, la Flextreme concept.

Carrozzeria cross-over, soluzioni tecniche prese in prestito dalla cugina Chevrolet Volt, linee morbide con fari a boomerang: l’auto si presenta così, simpatica e avveniristica, ma è ovviamente sotto la carrozzeria che sono riposte le sue peculiarità. Più precisamente due. Il motore elettrico da oltre 120kW e 320Nm di coppia, oltre a muovere le ruote anteriori, fornisce anche energia in frenata, mentre il 1.3 diesel ha come scopo principale quello di caricare le batterie (grazie ad un generatore da 53 kW): nel caso queste ultime non necessitino di nessun “aiutino”, può essere fatto lavorare fra i 1.500 e i 1.800 giri, in caso contrario raggiunge i 3.200.

In questo modo la Flextreme riesce a coniugare i 100km di autonomia forniti dal motore elettrico con i 775 di quello diesel.

Dentro la Flextreme Concept i tecnici Opel hanno trovato posto per un altra sorpresa, dedicata soprattutto alla mobilità urbana: nella carrozzeria di questa show-car è stato ricavato un apposito vano in cui collocare due Segway (i celeberrimi scooter che si guidano in piedi), con relative prese di corrente da cui caricarli. Più comodo di così…
