FPV F6 X: Ford's red-hot Territory

The FPV F6 X will become one of the world's fastest 4WDs when it is unveiled at the 2007 Sydney motor show.

It's official: FPV will unveil a high-performance version of the Ford Territory at the Sydney motor show next week. The FPV F6 X will be the first non-Falcon model to hit Ford Performance Vehicle's showrooms when it goes on sale in the first quarter of 2008.

But FPV's thunder has been stolen by an overly enthusiastic Australian car magazine, which was supplied details by FPV under a strict embargo. The magazine, whcih gave a written undertaking not to publish the information until the day after the Sydney motor show opens on Friday 12th October, arrived in subscribers' letterboxes as early as Thursday 4th October – more than a week early.

The FPV F6 X has been a hot topic of speculation at Drive.com.au ever since the Territory launched in 2004. It is based on an all-wheel-drive version of the Ford Territory Turbo, and gets a significant power boost in the form of the 270kW/550Nm turbocharged six-cylinder engine also found in the FPV F6 Typhoon sedan and F6 Tornado ute.

According to the information leaked in the magazine report, the six-speed-automatic-only F6 X should be capable of accelerating from 0-100km/h in about six seconds. This kind of straightline performance puts it on par with more expensive, high-performance 4WD wagons from Porsche, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

The report confirms that the FPV F6 X scores a number of firsts for the FPV brand. The two-tonne wagon is fitted with Brembo six-piston front brakes with a unique anti-lock-braking tune, and is the first FPV model with electronic stability control and curtain airbags. The F6 X gets firmer suspension and unique 18-inch alloy wheels to improve its road manners .

The FPV F6 X's exterior is subtly enhanced by the wheels, a bold silver grille and dark front skidplate that wraps up into the front bumper. A dark accent also surrounds the bonnet scoop that feeds air to the intercooler.

Inside, the F6 X gets two-tone leather seats with the F6 X logos worked into the headrests – including the optional third-row seats, and an individual numbered build plate near the transmission lever. A premium sound system and dual-zone climate control are standard.

Expect to pay about $75,000 for the FPV F6 X.
