The Truth About The C7 Corvette

Better Feedback From a Mostly New Platform

From the August, 2011 issue of Motor Trend / By Mike Connor

Mark Reuss' statement that the C7 Corvette will be "completely different" from the C6 and C5 has unleashed volumes of irrational speculation. For example, the Detroit Bureau is reporting that GM is developing a new 3.0-liter turbocharged overhead-cam V-8 for the C7, expected within two years.

That is completely different, and GM would have to plan this engine for such rear-drive cars as the upcoming Cadillac ATS, possibly the next CTS, and the Camaro to make it feasible. As someone close to the C7 project said, "We're here to make money." The prospect of GM working on an all-new V-8 two years after bankruptcy, less than three years after it canceled its last OHC V-8 program, and four years before a 35.5-mpg Corporate Average Fuel Economy standard seems like a long shot.

We don't have a confirmed denial of the new V-8, though we can dispense with at least three rumors right off:

1. No rear-mid-engine. While GM engineers have discussed that possibility for every Corvette since the C3, the latest iteration of that idea left with Bob Lutz, who is now working for mid-engine sports car company Lotus. Even now, GM is in no position to spend such money for the C7 go-around.

2. It will not have a base supercharged or turbocharged V-6. Likewise, the above budget constraints rule out any exotic hybrid system. GM already has cars like the Chevy Volt to carry the green/fuel-efficient car mantle.

3. The C7 will not be Wankel rotary-powered. See number 1.

We figure that Reuss, GM's North American president, was talking about the C7's substantially new platform. Engineers are said to be working on the Corvette's chassis feel and feedback. GM's philosophy is it has one of the best-handling sports cars already, but it needs major tweaking so you don't have to be a professional race car driver in order to drive it fast on the racetrack.

Also, it won't be on a revived Kappa platform. That architecture died with Pontiac and Saturn, and their two-seat four-cylinder sports cars, the Solstice and Sky. That's not to say the C7 couldn't have bits of Kappa in it, though there was nothing in the Solstice or Sky that would suggest better feel or feedback than C5 or C6 Corvettes. The C6 is already slightly shorter than a Porsche 911, and we don't expect dimensions to change substantially, though engineers are working hard to shed pounds.

The most visible change will be to the interior, known as Cobalt-cheap in a car with Cadillac sticker prices. The charge is for interior design, materials, and fit and finish that look worthy of a $100K sticker for a $70K sports car.

With the car expected in early 2013 as a '14 model, the C7 hasn't yet surfaced for spy shots. Little is known about the design, other than it will get much different exterior styling, still rendered in fiberglass and plastic. Rumors of an optional split rear window referencing the '63 Stingray seems no more plausible than the mid-engine rotary or V-6, though we can't get anyone to deny it. Chevrolet will build a short run of 2013 models beginning in late '12, including a 60th-anniversary special edition. Don't be surprised to see Polo white convertibles with red interiors, but forget about a six-cylinder with Powerglide.

There's no replacement for displacement ..... :§

2014 Chevrolet Corvette C7 Mule Spy Photos - Future Cars

The C7 Corvette will be more of an evolution, although you can expect a smaller V8.

he exclusive images you see here, derived from hours spent secretly poring over the sheetmetal of two seventh-generation Corvettes, show the next step in the supercar's iconic evolution. These aren't photos, but this is absolutely the next-generation Chevy Corvette in ZR1 trim. GMso doesn't want you to see these.

Love it or hate it, the Chevrolet Corvette is an American icon. For most of its 60 years, the 'Vette's shown that a commodity-focused U.S. automaker can confound expectations and compete with the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini. The seventh-generation Corvette — orC7 Corvette — as fan-boys and GM insiders call it — is designed to further confound those expectations.

These renderings were derived from hours this weekend I (and our designer) spent in secret, poring over the completely uncamouflaged sheetmetal of two versions of the next-gen Corvette. With limited time, we decided to, rather than show you the first one, a base level Corvette, we focused our rendering efforts instead on the high-performance ZR1 trim level.

None of our sources were willing to go on the record or allow me to run their name for fear they might lose their jobs. That's also why I'm showing renderings rather than actual photos — I don't care if it might cast doubt on the veracity of the styling — but I didn't want anyone losing their job.

That said, we showed these images to three different sources at General Motors — and all three confirmed that the images you see here accurately portray the ZR1 trim level for the seventh-generation Corvette. A fourth source — a non-GM employee — confirmed that the vehicle we show here is one of two Initial Vehicle Engineering Release (IVER) vehicles that's been making the rounds at the Milford Proving Grounds.

The ZR1 trim level is expected to come out later than the base model Corvette — which is slated for a 2014 model year and a reveal at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

At first glance, you think this is nothing more than an evolutionary change to America's supercar. But give it a second for that initial enormously deceiving glance to dissipate into a double-take. The changes — like the very Camaro-esque rear taillights, the over-exaggerated side vents, and a new window in the rear quarter — will be absolutely polarizing to any Corvette fan-boy. And other items — like a split-rear window, a la the Corvette Stingray, won't make it into production.
