New Jaguar F-type planned

Plans for Jaguar’s on-again, off-again two-seater roadster are set to be revived. The car, code-named Jaguar F-type, could be launched in time for an end-of-recession launch in 2011.

The Jaguar F-type, a Porsche Boxster rival, has the enthusiastic backing of group chairman Ratan Tata, who signalled his openness to it last year, even before his acquisition of Jaguar was complete. He believes Jaguar must use image projects like the new roadster to “show a new face” when demand for a new wave of more efficient luxury returns.

The move signals Tata’s complete break with the management style of Ford, JLR’s former owner, which believed Jaguar needed to spend its restricted model development funds on ‘mainstream’ projects like the Jaguar X-type estate and diesel.

“Putting exciting projects on the back burner is the thing we should not do,” said Tata. “Certainly we must attend to business by doing our utmost to cut costs and reduce time-frames, but above all we must ensure that we come out of this slump ahead of where we were – with exciting cars like the roadster that show where we want to go.”

Jaguar showed a promising front-engine, rear-drive F-type concept car in 2000, touting it as evidence of an “intent to return to the sports car market in which we so successful in the ’50s and ’60s”, but subsequently dropped it to concentrate on more mainstream projects.

adesso è ufficiale che la nuova sportiva a due posti, erede della gloriosa E-Type che si chiamerà XE, sarà presentata al Salone di Ginevra del 2011. Tale data non è stata scelta a caso da Jaguar, infatti sarà il 50esimo anniversaio del lancio della E-Type proprio lì a Ginevra.

Motore anteriore, trazione posteriore e telaio in alluminio accorciato derivato dalla XJ. Potrebbe montare un nuovo motore V6 supercharged derivato dal nuovo V8 appena presentato sulle XFR e XKR.

Update: Secondo Autocar (che cita una fonte attendibile all'interno di Lotus), Jaguar avrà il supporto di Lotus per lo sviluppo della nuova XE, la compatta roadster/coupè che farà concorrenza alla Porsche Boxster/Cayman. Le due Case inglesi lavoreranno congiuntamente su un telaio in alluminio derivato dalla XK.

Lotus Engineering and Jaguar have been co-operating on key engineering programmes, including the new front-engined Jaguar XE roadster.

The relationship between two of Britain’s most significant automotive companies has already resulted in Lotus handling gurus helping with one of Jaguar’s recent models.

Experts at Lotus helped Jaguar set up and hone the chassis of the limited-run Jaguar XKR-S coupe, work that also helped Jaguar decide the chassis settings of the new 503bhp XKR.

Another on-going project relates to advanced engineering feasibility work for the new Jaguar XE sports car, mooted for a 2011 Geneva launch but yet to be committed to production.

Lotus is working through the detailed numbers to see if the front-engined two-seater can be a production reality. “They’re sending data to Lotus Engineering on Jaguar’s behalf,” said a well-placed source.

Key details under the Lotus microscope are the basic economies of putting the Jaguar XE into production with an aluminium chassis, after ruling out a steel structure based on the XF.

Lotus pioneered aluminium sports car technology with the Elise, knowledge that it subsequently deployed on the Aston Martin Vanquish, which it engineered for Ford.

Jaguar has two potential aluminium technologies for the XE: the extrusions/castings structure of the XK and the riveted monocoque of the current Jaguar XJ.

Lotus is also a front-runner if Jaguar looks to outsource production of the XE. Lotus has plenty of spare production capacity at Hethel.

Although there’s no indication that will happen, Jaguar did look at outsourcing production of the aborted alloy-bodied, mid-engined F-type.

It was seen as a necessary step to get production costs down, a problem that Jaguar now faces again with the XE.

Autocar, riporta una notizia molto interessante. La futura sportiva compatta della Jaguar, XE, che esordirà entro due anni, sarà basata su una versione accorciata del telaio in alluminio della XK. Per dimensioni esterne, si suppone, andrà a competere con la Mercedes-Benz SLK e leggermente più lungo per realizzare una "sportiva compatta premium".

Riguardo ai motori - che andranno a finire all'anteriore, non nel mezzo - potrebbe essere un nuovo V6 Jaguar derivato dal nuovo V8 5.0 (che ricordiamo essere modulare).

Lotus sarà coinvolta nello sviluppo della XE e collaborerà strettamente con i tecnici Jaguar sul pacchetto telaio/sospensioni/freni quindi sulla dinamica di guida.

Ovviamente non possiamo avere la benchè minima idea, per il momento, di come sarà la futura XE. Questo anche perchè il concept F-Type (2000), basato sulla XK180, avvenne sotto la direzione del compianto Geoff Lawson, responsabile del design Jaguar, morto prematuramente nel giugno del 1999. Il progetto fu completato sotto la supervisione del nuovo responsabile del design, Ian Callum, il quale considerava la concept F-Type un omaggio a Geoff Lawson.
