Chrysler-Great Wall JV Comes to a Halt

Last year, Great Wall Motors and Chrysler signed an agreement to share parts, technology, and sales networks in both China and the USA. However, according to this afternoons media reports it appears that the JV has come to a halt as Chrysler is fighting for survival and Great Wall are concentrating on their own development.

The agreement signed last July stated that Chrysler were searching for expansion in China, however, the sudden turn in the economy has left Chrysler in a poor situation. The JV could have been the start of something really beautiful for both companies, as GWM already make an interesting array of SUV’s (perfect for Jeep tech) and have plans for a very large R&D center (perfect for low cost research). GWM also had plans to make their own range of sedans, which could have been aided by a Chrylser input.

The major issue for Chrysler may not be the economy, but rather their latest JV partner, Fiat, who have a rather interesting ongoing spat with Great Wall motors over the Perry mini car, that looks rather like the Fiat Panda. Could have Fiat played a hand in stopping the JV? Possibly.

Great Wall sold 125,000 vehicles in China last year, and exported 55,000 to foreign markets. This year they are pushing to sell 200,000 vehicles, GWM are reportedly planning to use the lull in sales to focus heavily on R&D which will give them excellent cars in which to push into Europe once the economy picks up.

Fiat reviews Chrysler plants as it prepares for alliance, sources say

Fiat S.p.A. is conducting environmental and safety reviews of Chrysler LLC factories this week as part of its plan to take a 35 percent stake in the U.S. automaker, said two people familiar with the effort.

Fiat has hired Environ Holdings Inc. of Arlington, Va., to do the studies, the people said. Environ teams have been combing Chrysler factories to determine whether a Fiat investment would expose the Italian automaker to environmental or safety liabilities.

The planned alliance, announced in January, is viewed by Chrysler executives as the preferred route to survival. Chrysler, which is relying on $4 billion in U.S. loans to stay afloat and is seeking $5 billion more, would get access to Fiat engines, transmissions and small-car platforms to help meet stricter U.S. fuel-economy standards.

The agreement also would help Chrysler ease its dependence on low-mpg light trucks, while Fiat would be able to sell vehicles through Chrysler's U.S. dealer network.

Environ and Fiat declined to comment. Chrysler spokesman Max Gates said, "Chrysler and Fiat are in the due diligence phase of our strategic-alliance discussions,'' but he didn't provide specifics.

The alliance is contingent on Chrysler receiving the additional $5 billion in federal aid to continue operations and carry out its restructuring.

The automaker's U.S. sales have dropped more than 40 percent, year-to-year, in each of the past four months.

Alcune ore fa è stata diffusa questa dichiarazione apparentemente ufficiale di Chrysler: Fiat, insieme al 35% del pacchetto azionario Chrysler, avrebbe accettato di accollarsi anche il 35% del debito da restituire al governo USA.

Ovvero il 35% dei 4+5 miliardi di dollari che Chrysler dovrebbe ricevere in totale e restituire nei prossimi anni. Per un totale di 3.15 miliardi di $ a carico di Fiat.

La smentita ufficiale di Fiat è stata fulminea.

PRECISAZIONE

In relazione alle notizie comparse recentemente relative alle ipotesi di alleanza tra la Fiat e Chrysler, il Gruppo Fiat intende chiarire definitivamente che l’accordo in discussione non contempla alcuna assunzione, da parte del Gruppo, del debito attuale o futuro della società americana.
