Rumors about what Cadillac is planning for its next-generation flagship sedan have been flying around the web for years now. Guesses have ranged from a Zeta-based vehicle sharing Pontiac G8 heritage to the most recent reports of a still-murky XTS-badged AWD sedan. This week, a new report confirms the program to build a new flagship Caddy is back underway.

The range-topping Cadillac had been derailed by the financial crisis and then the bankruptcy General Motors has so famously dealt with over the last year, but now that the New GM is running the show, the DTS/STS replacement is go.

The report indicates that the Zeta-based solution won't be used, however, and that instead the new flagship will ride on a modified version of the Epsilon II platform found in the 2010 Buick LaCrosse. According to GM insiders, the usually FWD Epsilon II platform will be made wider and longer and converted to AWD.

The car is part of a new strategy for Cadillac that is similar to BMW's three-car lineup of small, medium and large. The CTS would be the medium-sized car, and a new small Cadillac also is expected in 2011.

Whatever is to come of the top-end Cadillac model, however, don't expect to see it on the road until very late in 2011, though it will likely make an auto show debut sometime before that. The plant where the car is expected to be built--GM's Oshawa, Ontario plant--isn't going to start on the XTS until December 2011.

Stay tuned as GM is expected to make several major product announcements later today. We'll keep you on top of the details as they break, but in the mean time, you can read up on our experience with the 2010 LaCrosse if you haven't already.

General Motors Vice President of Communications Chris Preuss revealed that the mysteriously teased Cadillac concept may indeed be the Cadillac XTS. The revelation was made in a Twitter conversation with American high school student Alex Donegan.

Donegan seemingly started the conversation by asking, "Some info on the GMC Granite and others that will be at NAIAS?"

Preuss responded, "Granite. XTS. CTS-V coupe. Aveo RS (all new). Regal. A CFO." His reply references the GMC Granite (based on the Chevy Orlando concept), the XTS, the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V coupe, the all-new turbocharged Chevrolet Aveo RS, and the 2011 Buick Regal. The last part of his comment possibly refers to new GM Chief Financial Officer, Chris Liddell.

GM distributed a teaser shot of Cadillac's impending concept debut, which appears to show a four-door car. The prototype is another step in the brand's Art & Science design theme, following the Converj, CTS Coupe Concept, and the Sixteen.

Non so dove scriverlo perchè parla di due "flagship sedan" di Cadillac in sviluppo, di cui una è appunto la XTS e l'altra una sportiva a motore centrale (centrale? :| )

More Details on Future Cadillac Flagship, Could Be Mid-Engine Sports Car

We broke the news last June that Cadillac was planning a flagship vehicle, but precious few details were known at the time. We’ve since learned more, including the intriguing possibility that the flagship may not be a sedan at all. Indeed, Cadillac currently has two paths its flagship could follow; the end result of either would slot above the forthcoming XTS (shown in concept form above), which will replace both the mediocre STS and geezer-friendly DTS when it goes on sale as a 2012 model.

The first is a flagship sedan, code-named “UP” (Über Premium? Ultra Pretentious? Urethane Protected?) and designed to take on the Audi A8, the BMW 7-series, and the Mercedes-Benz S-class. Priced at around $80,000, this car would use a lightened version of the long-wheelbase RWD Zeta platform found under our upcoming Chevy Caprice Police Pursuit cop car. Power would come from either a turbocharged, direct-injected V-6 or a naturally aspirated V-8.

The second vehicle under consideration is more expressive and more expensive but decidedly lower volume. The exact shape of this possible car has yet to be decided; proposals include a large—nearly Maybach-large—high-end asphalt crusher, a Mercedes CL–sized personal luxury coupe, a high-performance coupe, a four-door B-pillarless sedan, a trend-following four-door coupe, or, most interesting, a mid-engine two-seat sports car built on a new platform.

Cadillac Cien Concept

As to the latter, Cadillac remains enthralled with the design and layout of the Cien concept from early last decade; that fascination has likely stoked the sports-car fire. To justify the piles of money required to develop a bespoke architecture, though, such a car would need to be incredibly expensive—$150K or more. Of course, cost amortization could come by using the platform in future GM products, like, say, the C8 Corvette. (The C7 Vette will be a mechanically similar but aesthetically evolved take on the current C6.) But while it’s possible the C8 could go mid-engine as a rule, there’s also a chance that any such architecture could be used to create only a brand-topping spin-off—think evolved ZR1—while the rest of the lineup would remain front-engined. The current ZR1 has proven that there’s room for a six-figure specialized Vette, but a fully mid-engined (and more expensive) lineup would naturally limit sales volumes, and GM wants to keep the Corvette factory in Bowling Green humming.

The decision as to what direction the future Caddy range-topper will take should be made by the middle of the year. Before anything as wild as a hugely expensive sports car can come to market, however, Cadillac has to both prepare and successfully launch more critical products—the 3-series–fighting 2013 ATS lineup, for example—and prove reliably profitable. For that reason, our money’s on the less risky sedan option winning out.

Modello base 4 cilindri anche per la XTS?

We already know that the upcoming ATS will feature a four-cylinder engine but this will be just the start of Cadillac’s new four-cylinder onslaught as the downsized engines are also destined to appear in the XTS range and possibly even the next-generation CTS. This will be in stark contrast to Cadillac’s current lineup, which is dominated by V-6 and V-8 powerplants.

The new four-cylinder engines won’t be like the wheezy lumps of metal of yesteryear. Instead, they will be based on GM’s latest Ecotec four-cylinder engine design and output in the range of 220 to 260 horsepower thanks to the addition of direct injection and turbocharging technologies.

Hybrid and even plug-in hybrid variations are also possible down the track as previewed by last year’s XTS Platinum Concept, although this particular concept featured a V-6 engine in its plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

The good news is that if luxury buyers are happy with the performance of the new four-cylinder Cadillacs, the downsized
