Reports that Saab will be sold to Spyker imminently are gathering pace, following reports that a Spyker car has been delivered to Saab’s Trollhattan museum.

Although the reports remain unconfirmed, they come from renowned Saab enthusiast website saabsunited.com.

Reports also suggest that Spyker is prepared to replace chief backer Convers Group, a Russian-backed company, with finance from Dutch billionaire Marcel Boekhoorn.

Swedish televsion show Rapport has also said that Spyker will present its purchase of Saab at a press conference later today.

GM is reported to have insisted it wouldn't deal the Convers Group, and such a move would relieve one of the remaining stumbling blocks currently standing in the way of a deal’s progress.

In addition, the Swedish government has now offered loan guarantees to assist potential purchasers of Saab.

On the back of this news shares in Spyker have soared by nearly 30 per cent this morning, and reports now suggest that a deal could be done as early as today.

AMSTERDAM/STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -- Dutch luxury car maker Spyker Cars said on Thursday it is nearing an outcome in its talks to buy Saab from General Motors Co., although it gave no indication as to how the talks were going.

Spyker CEO Victor Muller told Reuters via a text message on Thursday that it was "likely" that it was now in exclusive talks with GM.

GM had nominated two wind-down supervisors for Saab last week, but at the same said it was considering several bids for the company, effectively keeping the future of the Swedish carmaker hanging in the balance.

Muller told Reuters that talks with GM were ongoing and the "outcome will be clear very soon," adding later that news could come in the next few days.

Although Muller warned the "outcome is still unpredictable" in its 11th-hour effort to save the Swedish brand, there are indications that Spyker could be further along in its talks with GM than its rival bidders.

Spyker is battling against another bid for Saab from investment firm Genii Capital, which is backed by Formula One mogul Bernie Ecclestone.

But a source close to the Genii-Ecclestone bid said there had been no further discussions with GM or its advisers since last week, when the group submitted a revised offer.

The source said a statement concerning the status of the group's bid could be published later on Thursday.

"The situation is on hold," the source said, adding that GM could be in exclusive talks with Spyker.

Asked if he could confirm whether Spyker was in exclusive talks with GM, Muller said via text message he was unable to confirm it, but added that it was "likely."

There has been no official indication of a deadline for a deal and a GM Europe spokesman said talks regarding Saab's future are continuing. He did not comment further.

Genii Capital had earlier said this week it remained hopeful about its chances of buying Saab, as liquidators had yet to start dismantling the firm.

On Sunday, Muller denied reports that Genii Capital and Spyker were making a joint bid for Saab.

GM, which lost $88 billion between 2005 and 2008, was bailed out by the U.S. government in return for a pledge to restructure. It is cutting capacity in Europe by a fifth, and shedding 8,300 jobs.

GM's labor and capacity cuts at its European operations saw it announce earlier on Thursday that it will it shut an Opel plant in Antwerp, Belgium, with the loss of 2,600 jobs.

Several news agencies and TV stations from Sweden reported today that Spyker Cars N.V. had completed a deal with General Motors on the sale of its Saab unit. Spyker issued a release stating that while talks are ongoing, the outcome is still uncertain, meaning that despite the reports, there's no done deal yet.

The tiny supercar manufacturer from The Netherlands stressed the fact that since Saab is currently in liquidation, the talks must come to an end soon. As always, we'll keep a close eye on this story and will report upon any further developments.

General Motors is still progressing with its plans to wind Saab down, GM CEO Ed Whitacre has confirmed.

Speaking at a news conference to announce him as GM's permanent CEO, Whitacre said talks with Spyker were progressing but there was nothing to report at the moment.

"We have not changed our direction on the wind down of Saab's operations," he said. "There have been advanced talks with Spyker but we have no deal to announce this morning.

"If and when we do we will let you know and that's my only comment on the issue."

Talking about his appointment as permanent CEO, Whitacre said: "I don't think going permanent will change much going forward, I am just trying to do teh right thing for this company and its people. What this place needs now is stability."

La conferenza stampa di oggi era per annunciare la nomina di Whitacre a CEO permanente di GM.

E come ha riportato Nico qui sopra, lo stesso Whitacre ha detto di non aver nulla di nuovo da dichiarare sulla trattativa con Spyker.

Invece è stata ritirata ufficialmente l'offerta del fondo Genii, quello in cui ha a che fare anche l'onnipresente Bernie Ecclestone.

If it seemed like a remote shot in the dark, that’s because it probably was: Luxembourg-based Genii Capital says that it is withdrawing from negotiations to acquire Saab from General Motors over timetable concerns.

Genii, which had the advantage of the seemingly limitless pockets of Formula One boss Bernie Eccelstone, entered into the bidding for Saab just three days before GM’s deadline. The company says that it was drawn to the “exclusive brand with strong potential, based on the capabilities of a highly skilled workforce,” but that it would be unable to create a firm business case before GM dismantles the brand.

Spyker is set to be announced as the buyer of Saab at a press conference this evening.

A conference has been scheduled for 19.15 CET this evening - 18:15 UK time.

The deal is reported to have been signed with GM today, with news agency Bloomberg saying it has an emailed statement from Spyker confirming the sale.

Spyker intends to change its name to Saab Spyker Automobiles. Spyker's chairman, Russian banker Vladimir Antonov, has reportedly sold his shares to an equity firm owned by Spyker CEO Victor Muller.

Reports suggest Spyker will give GM $75 million (£47m) for Saab, while GM will keep another $100m (£62m) in current Saab liquidity, and $325m (£210m) in preferred shares from the new, Spyker-owned Saab company.

Earlier this afternoon Dutch financial authorities announced that trading in Spyker shares was suspended, prompting speculation that a deal to purchase Saab is about to be announced.
