"Fiat has reportedly requested that Chrysler boost production at its Toluca, Mexico plant that builds the recently renovated Dodge Journey and new Fiat Freemont, itself basically a Journey wearing the Fiat emblem with the addition of a diesel engine and revised suspension tuning.

According to Automotive News, Fiat dealers have placed some 15,700 orders for the crossover, significantly higher than expected. In fact, Fiat had only planned to sell 13,000 Freemonts for the entire 2011 model year in Europe. According to the automaker, 80 percent of Freemont orders have come from its home market of Italy, where the CUV is priced 5,600 euros less than the Ulysse MPV the Freemont replaces.

In order to satisfy this unforeseen demand, Chrysler needs to supply Fiat with 4,000 units per month, an increase of about a thousand vehicles over initial expectations. So far, the increased production has been accomplished by means of overtime, but Chrysler is hoping to meet the necessary supply for the rest of the year without the additional costs associated with overtime pay. Conferma ufficiale di Fiat Usa (mi pare di capire divulgata tramite Twitter) che la versione Abarth della 500 made in USA sarà presentata in versione definitiva al Salone di Los Angeles il prossimo novembre.

Il nome sarà "Fiat 500 Abarth", mentre non è ancora stato comunicato nulla riguardo al motore.

Sicuramente sarà un 1.4 Turbo, ma le ipotesi sulla potenza spaziano da 135 a 175 CV.

The Wait is Over: Fiat 500 Abarth Coming to L.A. Show

Fiat’s return to the Americas was set to be a multi-step process resting solely on the shoulders of the retro-chic 500. The first step was the release of the Americanized 500 hatch. Next up, was the convertible 500C’s release. The third and final step to be completed was the release of the scorpion-festooned 500 Abarth. While the 500 and its topless sibling have already hit dealer showrooms the Abarth has been strangely absent – until now. Fiat USA today made the announcement over Twitter (of course) that the 500 Abarth will finally make its debut at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show. Much like how Fiat tweaked the 2012 500 for American tastes, the 500 Abarth should also feature some differences from the European version. For starters, the 500 Abarth will feature the same slightly modified front fascia as the standard 500. The 500 Abarth, like the standard 500 will also feature some minor tweaks in the interior that were made for the North American market, like bigger cup holders. Our version of the 500 Abarth should also get a slightly reworked suspension from the American 500 that will be better suited for North American roads.

The North American-spec Fiat 500 Abarth is also rumored to get a sixth cog in its transmission and a few more ponies under the hood than its European brethren. In Europe, the 500 Abarth comes in two forms. The standard 500 Abarth comes with a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-banger with 134-hp. One rung above that is the 500 Abarth Essesse – Italian for ‘SS.’ The Essesse gets the same 1.4-liter turbocharged I-4, but with more power, 160-hp to be exact. It’s rumored that in North America, the standard 500 Abarth will have between 150 and 170-hp bone stock. That would put the 500 Abarth in line with the Mini Cooper S, and would allow Fiat to potentially create an even higher horsepower 500 Abarth Essesse to put up against the Mini’s Cooper John Cooper Works. With the 500 undercutting the Cooper by 200 lbs or so, this might just be the start of a pint-sized horsepower war. We say bring it.
