Ford Start Could Replace Ka in 2014

Published Oct 14, 2010

Just the Facts:

Media reports says Ford's Start could go on sale in 2014.

The small car is expected to be priced below $13,000.

Start concept featured a three-cylinder EcoBoost engine.

LONDON — When Ford unveiled its huggable Start concept earlier this year at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show, it hinted that the tiny two-door coupe eventually could replace the long-lived Ka in global markets. The automaker also indicated that the Start's 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engine also was headed to production.

A report Thursday from Britain's Autocar says a production version of the Start, priced from under $13,000, could go on sale in 2014, initially in emerging markets such as China, India and South America but eventually around the world, including Europe.

The four-passenger Start concept was designed at Ford's California advanced studio, under the direction of Freeman Thomas, drawing styling inspiration from, among other vehicles, the Porsche 356 Speedster.

At the Start's unveiling in Beijing, Ford described the concept as "an aspirational automobile designed for urban transportation in emerging markets."

The Start concept features snap-on, precolored composite body panels mounted on an aluminum/steel space frame. The car measures less than 146 inches long.

Ford also said in Beijing that the three-cylinder EcoBoost engine "will go into production in the near future." The 1.0-liter engine features turbocharging, direct injection and stop-start technology, and depending on stage of tuning should deliver up to 120 horsepower. It is expected to be offered in a variety of Ford small cars, including the Fiesta, Focus and C-Max.

Inside Line says: The Start has just as much personality as — if not more than — the Fiat 500, with which the current Ford Ka shares its underpinnings. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent

The Ford Ka is highly unlikely to see a third generation. According to Ford of Europe design boss Martin Smith, the city car “produces absolutely no profit” and doesn’t fit in with the firm’s global ‘One Ford’ ambitions.“It won’t pass a US crash test, it was designed too narrowly to suit European tastes and it’s only built in one place. It’ll get a light mid-life refresh but, as things stand, I can’t see a life for the car much beyond that,” he said.

However, Smith did hint that there was a great deal of interest internally in a more diverse range of superminis that could be used to return Ford of Europe to profitability.

“[Ford president and CEO] Alan Mulally’s favourite kinds of car of the moment are small cars with global reach that we can create a high yield from,” Smith said. “The Ecosport is the perfect example: it’s simple, cheap to make and could sell the world over.”

Niente terza generazione per la Ford Ka, a quanto pare.

[h=2]Considered a 'stand-alone

vehicle'[/h]

The Ford Ka will probably be axed in

the near future since a company executive said the model has not been included

in a brand-wide advertising campaign.

This isn't the first time we hear this as in late 2012 Ford of

Europe design chief Martin Smith said the Ka "produces absolutely no profit."

Now, Ford of Europe director of social media Elena Cortesi declared "for quite a

long time we have not produced new advertising" and they describe the Ka as "a

stand-alone vehicle."

Add to these two statements a 20 percent

decrease in European sales last year to 59,112, and it's easy to understand why

such rumors are born. In addition, JATO Dynamics figures show sales through

April have plummeted by 27 percent to 18,824 units.
