Nick Reilly, GM's top executive in Europe, said that Opel lost $1.6 billion in 2010, when it had projected a loss of $3 billion. The loss was less severe partly because the automaker decided to defer restructuring costs -- including shedding nearly 8,000 jobs in two plant closings -- to this year. GM lost $1.8 billion in Europe last year.

Opel to Return to America?

For the past few weeks, Opel has been a common buzzword going through the automotive grapevine. Last week it was rumored General Motors was preparing to sell off its ailing European arm, and now there are talks about possibly importing an Opel-branded small car to GM’s home turf in the States.

In an interview with German magazine Auto Motor und Sport, Opel’s counsel chief Klaus Franz proposed the idea of selling a small car in America to ride the wave of demand for compact, fuel-sipping cars, especially among city dwellers. The report states that production could start as early as 2013 and would be sold under the Junior or Allegra name.

The accompanying photos reveal a two-door hatch with a curvy profile similar to the Toyota Yaris and a rear end with hints of the previous-generation Nissan Versa. The proposed Opel small car appears to be similar the Euro market Corsa, which sits below the Opel Astra (sold on our shores under the Saturn nameplate from 2008-2009). Opel previously imported cars (under its own name) to America during the 1960s to the early 1970s and Franz believes the Opel brand still carries a positive reputation among American consumers.

GM has yet to respond to Franz’s proposal, though it’s doubtful GM CEO Dan Akerson would want to add another player to an increasingly competitive small car market. GM is set to release the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic this fall, which will do battle with other subcompacts entrants crowding the American market such as the Ford Fiesta, Mazda2, Honda Fit and Fiat 500.

Akerson and Opel made news last week after it was rumored that the CEO was losing patience with Opel’s inability to return a profit and was preparing to sell it to a willing suitor. Akerson and Opel has since attempted to assure the public–and most importantly Opel employees–that no such deal was in the works. In a phone interview with Bloomberg earlier this week, Franz stated that “there is no concrete evidence suggesting that GM wants to sell Opel.” Still, the spotlight turned to potential buyers including Volkswagen and Fiat, with CEOs of both companies stating they have no interest in purchasing Opel.

Do you think Opel would do well in America?

Ok, GM ha annunciato che adesso fa profitti ovunque nel mondo, Europa con OPEL inclusa "Opel earned $102 million in the second quarter before taxes and interest. "

GM Is Profitable in All of Regional Units, CEO Akerson Says

Sept. 27 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Co. is now profitable in all of its regional units, Chief Executive Officer Dan Akerson said. That’s a sign of a turnaround for a company whose European Opel unit is still in fix-it mode.

Akerson, speaking at Bloomberg’s Dealmakers Summit in New York today, said GM’s global presence was one of the selling points during the company’s initial public offering last year. In July, Akerson squelched rumors that GM planned to sell Opel. GM was correct to have reversed an agreement to sell its European Opel unit in 2009, he said.

“It was a bad deal,” Akerson said. “We were giving Europe away.”

GM, the largest U.S. automaker, predicts that its European business will be profitable this year, excluding some costs. Losses at the unit were a question mark for investors when the company went public in November 2010.

GM has been cutting capacity in Europe and has hired Detroit consulting firm Alix Partners to help the company find efficiencies in engineering and revenue opportunities in its sales and marketing operations.

Opel earned $102 million in the second quarter before taxes and interest. The German business unit lost $390 million in the first quarter because of $395 million in goodwill impairment costs.

$14.5 Billion in Losses

GM, based in Detroit, has lost $14.5 billion in Europe since 1999. The automaker in 2009 agreed to sell 55 percent of Ruesselsheim, Germany-based Adam Opel GmbH to Magna International Inc. and partner OAO Sberbank, before reversing course in November 2009.

Akerson appeared at the gathering with JPMorgan Chase & Co. Vice Chairman James B. “Jimmy” Lee. JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America Corp. and Citigroup Inc. led the GM IPO.

“Investors liked the story,” Lee said of the GM offering, which was originally priced at $26 to $29 a share before being sold at $33. “Another piece of the puzzle was new management. Investors said, ‘This was a new bunch of guys running this company.’”

GM’s goal for Europe is to be “profitable by just better than break-even before restructuring charges,” Nick Reilly, president of GM Europe, told reporters Sept. 13 at the Frankfurt auto show.

“In 2012, we won’t have those restructuring charges,” Reilly said at the time. “They’re mostly done. We’ll get the full 12-month benefit of the restructuring that we’ve done.”

GM rose 11 cents to $21.19 at 4:15 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares have slid 36 percent from their IPO price.
