GOTHENBURG, Sweden — Volvo is considering development of a luxury sport coupe that would be slotted in size and price above the C70 and would compete with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupé and similar premium two-doors.

Although the small C30 sports hatch remains in production for the moment and the C70 coupe-cabriolet will soldier on indefinitely, Volvo is considering something rather different for its next sporty offering.

While it is not yet in the model cycle plan, insiders say that a bigger coupe — a so-called C90 — is the favored strategy, a model that would presumably sire a convertible, vital for the U.S. market, as well.

If approved for production, the big two-door would be based on the Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) shared with the next-generation S80 and Volvo's other large cars. The C90 also would be powered by the same range of VEA four-cylinder gas and diesel engines. A plug-in hybrid version would at least be feasible, if not offered immediately.

Positioning Volvo's sportiest two-door further upmarket than the C30 and C70 would underline the brand's luxury ambitions, besides offering the scope for greater profitability.

If this model were to get to get the go-ahead from management, it would likely be as a derivative of the next-generation S60 (the current model was only launched in 2010) and would not appear before the second half of this decade at the earliest.

Volvo last offered a big coupe with the original C70, and before that the Bertone-built 780 and the 262C.

Inside Line says: Volvo could use a more glamorous, more luxurious sporty offering in its lineup, but there are more pressing model replacements to execute first.

Torna il Coupé a quanto pare, ma a partire dalla seconda metà di questo decennio. Notizia un po' troppo buttata lì a caso, imho.

Non è in plan in effetti. C'è una ipotesi di coupè. Anche se non so dove vorranno farlo dato che gli impianti sono tutti saturati e quello di Udevalla nato con Pininfarina Sverige (dove facevano la C70) è stato riqualificato.

A quanto pare, durante la presentazione dei nuovi facelift a Göteborg, il CEO di Volvo ha confermato un nuovo coupé basato sulla nuova piattaforma che debutterà l'anno prossimo su XC90.
