Ford is expanding the engine lineup of its new European market Tourneo Connect minivan even before it reaches showrooms later this year with the addition of its 1.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged three-cylinder unit, with which it will return a combined fuel economy of 5.6 l/100 km (50.4 mpg UK / 42mpg US) and 129 g/km CO2 emissions. The 1.0-liter unit is rated at 100PS (99hp) and comes fitted with Ford's latest fuel-saving technologies as standard, including Auto-Start-Stop, Active Grille Shutter and Smart Regenerative Charging.

“The 1.0-litre EcoBoost is a perfect fit for this flexible family car – low fuel costs at the pump and great performance,” said Stephen Lesh, Tourneo Connect chief program engineer, Ford of Europe.

For an even lower fuel consumption, European buyers will be able to opt for the 1.6-liter Duratorq TDCi diesel that offers 4.6 l/100 km (61.4 mpg UK / 51.1mpg US) and 120 g/km CO2 emissions, while the third option is a 150PS (148hp) 1.6-litre EcoBoost turbo'd petrol engine available with both 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions.

The same Focus-based van that is offered in both 5- and 7-seater forms will be sold in North America as the Transit Connect Wagon (if there was ever a more confusing naming strategy than Ford's expanded van series, we have yet to see it…), beginning from next year, with a naturally aspirated 2.5L four-cylinder gasoline and a 1.6-liter EcoBoost delivering over 30mpg (7.8L/100km).
