The new Mercedes S-class is due in showrooms in 2013 - and the luxury limo will soon be joined by this sleek new two-door CL coupe version.

Codenamed C217, this is a straightforward full-size two-door version of the S-class, as depicted in our artist's impression. It hunkers down lower to the tarmac, though this remains very much the gentleman's coupe with refinement, ease of access and comfort paramount. You'll have to wait for the £100,000+ AMG versions if you want outright sportiness.

[h=2]Mercedes-Benz CL: more about the C217[/h]Based on Daimler's new MRA modular rear-wheel drive architecture, the new CL is bursting with the group's latest technological know-how.

Lighter, more rigid and more flexible than the current platform, MRA introduces a reengineered state-of-the-art four-link front axle which separates the steering and braking forces from the spring and damper action, according to CAR's sources.

Although the new 2013 S-class will offer four-cylinder power for the first time, the CL will stick with the higher-end engines, stretching from V6s through heartland V8s and up to the V12 in the CL600 and CL65 AMG. At the mid-life facelift, Daimler's new straight six engine family will eventually replace the V6s.

[h=2]Tech onboard the new 2014 Mercedes CL[/h]Unlike Audi and BMW, Mercedes is keeping a relatively low carbonfibre profile, concentrating on steel, aluminium and magnesium instead. The one notable exception is the new CL63 AMG which sports a roof, lids and doors made of carbonfibre supplied by MB's partner Toray of Japan.

Inside, the new Mercedes CL gets a completely redesigned dashboard with two large-format monitors, programmable instruments, extended voice and gesture control, head-up display, knee 'bags and belt-integrated airbags.

The long list of innovative driver aids includes dynamic LED headlights, the so-called Magic Carpet Ride chassis featuring a clever camera-based damper adjustment system, an even more intelligent brake assistant with cross traffic recognition and a new active cruise control which can even execute lane changes and overtaking manoeuvres.

[h=2]Where the new CL fits into Merc's new S-class family[/h]The CL is one of seven new S-class family members, as Merc stretches the range wider and higher in the wake of the collapse of Maybach.

There'll be a variety of new saloons (now available in four wheelbases: SWB, LWB, XLWB and the planned Pullman stretch limo), the CL in coupe and convertible bodystyles and - eventually - a full-size four-door coupe, dubbed V217.

The new five-strong Mercedes S-class line-up will include a new coupé model intended to compete directly with the Bentley Continental GT. The Mercedes CL replacement will get a more muscular appearance along the lines of the Continental GT, with an insider saying the model will get “less of a two-door saloon look”.“The front is a lot more aggressive, there’s added structure to the flanks with a prominent drop line, a more rounded turret line and the rear overhang is significantly shorter,” said our source.

The likely premier for the S-class coupé will take place at the 2014 Geneva motor show, some six months before a new S-class cabriolet model makes a debut at the Paris motor show the same year. The new drop-top is being targeted at the Bentley Continental GTC.

The fabric roof cabriolet was first hinted at back in 2007 with the Mercedes-Benz Ocean Drive concept.

The new S-class line-up has been expanded to five models in three different bodystyles and wheelbase lengths, following the German car maker’s recent decision to axe its Maybach brand after a decade of disappointing sales following its resurrection in 2002.

In addition to the new coupé and cabriolet models in the new line-up, which is being developed under the internal working title W222, is a replacement to today’s flagship saloon in three different lengths.

Mercedes-Benz design sources say the new S-class has a more stately stature, and that the new look is in line with customer feedback, which suggests the current model lacks for visual prominence in comparison to its limousine rivals. The new car will come in standard-, long-wheelbase and extra-long-wheelbase forms, with the latter set to carry Pullman identification as part of Mercedes-Benz’s plans to compete head-to-head with the likes of the Rolls-Royce Ghost and Bentley Continential Flying Spur.

All three saloons are set to carry the same basic styling, albeit with differing rear door and rear side window lengths in line with their differing wheelbases.

On current planning, the standard- and long-wheelbase versions of the new S-class will make their world debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September 2013, with the Pullman – which stretches to over 5700mm in length and likely to fill the position vacated by the Maybach 57 – to possibly get an airing at the 2014 Beijing motor show.

Target Conti GT anche per la nuova CL che come precedentemente annunciato, si chiamarà Classe S Coupé. Sarà più muscolosa e meno berlina a due porte e sarà affiancata anche dalla versione open top.

Speriamo che lavorino bene...il CL attuale mi fa più ribrezzo della CLA
