[h=2]Could have 600 hp (447 kW)[/h]Rumors of a BMW M1 successor have been swirling ever since the company introduced the M1 Hommage concept at the 2008 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, but a new report is indicating the automaker will finally launch a supercar in 2016.

Designed to celebrate the company's 100th anniversary, the production model will reportedly adopt the M8 moniker instead of the iconic M1 name. Little else is known about the car but it could ride on a modified version of the carbon fiber and aluminum architecture that underpins the i8. This would help to spread out development costs as well as enable the model to be relatively lightweight.

Performance specifications remain a mystery, but the supercar would reportedly produce 600 hp (447 kW).

Mi sono sempre domandato del perché quello stupendo prototipo sia rimasto, appunto, allo stato di prototipo.

Sarebbe, non solo un'ottimo revival, ma anche un'ottima sportiva da contrapporre a Lambo e compagnia bella. Visto che da quel lato BMW scarseggia.

Per ora è un rumor, dato che il progetto M-ONE è stato messo in stand-by per dare la precedenza alla gamma Z ed a quella "i"

Capitolo M6 troppo comune e pesante per sfidare gli dei dell'olimpo.

Capitolo M8 attuale, vedremo. Le premesse di sicuro ci sono.

A conti fatti l'unica vettura che ha potuto, in qualche modo, entrare nella soglia delle supercar è stata l'M3 CLS.

Celebrating BMW's 100th birthday

BMW's flagship model is likely to receive the M8 moniker when it will come out in 2016, according to M division chief Friedrich Nitschke.

Developed to celebrate the brand's 100^th anniversary, the M8 could share the carbon fiber and aluminum underpinnings of the i8 plug-in hybrid supercar. Instead of the i8's 3-cylinder 1.5-liter engine, the M8 is expected to feature a twin-turbo V8 producing approximately 600 hp (447 kW) which would allow the car to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3 seconds and hit a top speed of about 200 mph (322 km/h).

Previously known as the BMW M1, the M8 could turn out to be a very light car taking into account the i8 weighs 1,480 kg (3,262 lbs), with 200 kg (440 lbs) of the weight having to do with the electric motor and batteries.

If Friedrich Nitschke will convince BMW chairman Norbert Reithofer to give the M8 the green light, most likely we'll get to see the car for the first time in 2015, before going on sale (probably in limited quantities) a year later.
