Out with the old, in with the new, or at least that's what Infiniti is saying about its new nomenclature.Beginning from next year, Infiniti will use the letter "Q" for all sedan, coupe and convertible models and the letters "QX" for SUVs and crossovers, adding a double digit at the end of both to signify the series and the hierarchy within the range.

The first Infiniti model to wear the brand's new badges is the G series' successor that will be revealed in sedan trim at the Detroit auto show in mid-January, and which will be called the Q50.

With the introduction of the 2014 model variants next year, the rest of Infiniti's cars will adopt the same naming strategy, with the M sedan called the Q70, the G Coupe and Convertible will become the Q60, the QX SUV will be changed to QX80, the FX to QX70, the JX to QX60, and the EX to QX50.

Infiniti said that the strategic change "reflects Infiniti's desire for clarity and cohesiveness" while also relating back to the brand's roots with the Q45, the company's first ever model that was presented in 1989.

Commenting on the new nomenclature, Johan de Nysschen, President of Infiniti, said:

"Over the past few months, we have talked at length with our retailers, our customers, and our business partners about our brand. The need for a new identity and direction to promote consumer familiarity with our model range as we expand the portfolio became evident. To achieve this, we clearly needed a simple and consistent nomenclature framework. After exhaustive research and evaluation, we concluded that 'Q' captured the inspiration within the next generation of Infiniti models, as well as emphasizing our performance credentials while harking back to our heritage with the Q45 – Infiniti's first iconic flagship product in 1989."
