[h=2]Could have a more unique design[/h]The BMW X6 has proved to be a resounding sales success and the company is hoping to continue that streak when they introduce the next-generation model in 2014.

Based on the third-generation X5, the X6 will reportedly adopt a more aggressive appearance which will make it more distinguishable from its sister model. As one source told Autocar, “We want to give our sporting models a more individual look, separating them more visually from the more practical models in our line-up.”

The next-generation model is expected to be slightly larger than its predecessor and ride on a new composite steel structure which is lighter than the current architecture. We can also expect lightweight axles to be sourced from the 5-Series.

On the handling front, entry-level models are expected to ride on steel springs while higher-end versions are slated to have a self-leveling air suspension.

Interestingly, the X6 will reportedly be equipped with a new "FlexRay" system that will allow for easy electronic upgrades. The details are still a little murky, but the system could make upgrading everything from the infotainment system to the chassis electronics much simpler.

Engine options remain unconfirmed, but speculation suggests we can expect a turbocharged 3.0-liter petrol, a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 petrol as well as twin-turbo and tri-turbo 3.0-liter diesels. There's also word of a plug-in hybrid variant which has a turbocharged 3.0-liter petrol engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack.
