A special edition already?

Judging by these spy photos, McLaren is apparently already working on a limited edition of its recently launched P1 supercar.

McLaren unveiled the P1 back in March at the Geneva Motor Show and now they are testing what appears to be a special edition internally codenamed "XP2R". This new variant is likely to come out in 2014 and will get a different more catching nameplate. The prototype was spotted testing at the Nürburgring before pulling over at the nearby gas station for a refill. Behind the wheel was McLaren's chief test driver Chris Goodwin.

The sticker on the car said "XP2R Prototype Vehicle" but that doesn't reveal any details about what will change. While the "standard" P1 has a combined output of 916 HP (674 kW), this special edition will probably get closer to the 1,000 HP (735 kW) mark by uprating the twin-turbo V8 3.8-liter gasoline engine and also by tweaking the electric motor (Instant Power Assist System - IPAS).

Expect a limited series of probably five to ten units, each priced at close to 1M GBP since the standard McLaren P1 kicks off at 866,000 GBP.

When we shared pictures and a video of a silver McLaren P1 tester wearing a pair of discreet stickers that read "XP2R Prototype Vehicle", shot by our spy photographers on the 'Ring the other night, we admitted that, besides the red calipers, there was nothing different about this car over the Geneva show model and that we didn’t know what it was.McLaren solved the mystery on Friday by tellingAutocar magazine that the P1 XP2R is not a special edition, new version or a racecar variant, but simply a tester of the standard P1 that will soon be available and which combines a 3.8-liter bi-turbocharged V8 with a KERS hybrid unit to produce a combined 903HP (916PS) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft).

The McLaren spokesman went one step further explaining the code names of prototypes to the publication: XP stands for eXPerimental and denotes early testers; the VP tag indicates Validation for later prototypes and PP is for Pre-Production models. The number "2" on the specific prototype reveals that it is a second test car, while the "R" indicates that it is a Revised prototype. So there you have it.
