The union representing workers at the Fiat 500L factory in Kragujevac, Serbia has a big job ahead of it. Workers are demanding raises, bonuses, and a steady work schedule. In its most recent newsletter, the union listed those demands once again, but instead of news of a pay negotiation the union told workers they’ve negotiated a chicken discount at a local butcher.

Samostalni Sindikat FAS has represented workers at the 500L factory since their collective bargaining agreement was signed in 2010. At the time, the union was able to negotiate fair wages and additional benefits for workers, including a 31,000 RSD ($294 USD) monthly average salary. Workers were happy as many were unemployed after Yugo production was shut down in 2008, and the wage was considered fair at the time.

Since 2010, FCA Serbia has become the biggest exporter in the country. The cost of living has also gone up since 2010 and workers have demanded raises along with confirmation of a second model for the factory. A new model would give the workers a sense of stability. Not only has a second model not been announced, the factory has been shut down multiple times in the past 6 months due to slow sales of the 500L.

In attempts to stay on the good side of its members, the union has aimed for small, stop-gap benefits. One such benefit is a gift of 10,000 RSD ($95 USD) to workers who have a child to help with baby supplies.

With no news on the real demands, the fringe benefit in this month’s newsletter is a chicken discount from a local butcher. Sitting directly across the page from the wage demands, we find out that the workers can get chicken drumsticks at a discounted rate equivalent to $2.51 per kilogram ($1.14 per pound).

MELFI, Italy -- Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has twice increased output at its plant in Melfi, southern Italy, in the last year to keep up with demand for the Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X.

FCA invested 1 billion euros in Melfi to build the sibling subcompact SUVs and the factory restarted production in August 2014 after a temporary closure.

FCA said that by the end of September it had built more than 149,000 Renegades and just under 100,000 units of the 500X at the plant.

The factory has increased its daily production rate of the two models to 1,200 from 1,050, plant manager Nicola Intrevado said during a press event at the facility. Including the plant’s other model, the Grand Punto, total daily production is 1,500.

Melfi is running at three shifts a day six days a week, with two shifts on Sundays.

Intrevado expects the plant to build more than 400,000 cars this year, making it one of the largest in the FCA production network. Most of the production will be Renegade and 500X models, along with about 75,000 to 80,000 units of the Grande Punto, he said.

Flexible line

Since January FCA has hired 1,800 new staff at Melfi, of which 1,470 are on permanent contracts. Intrevado said he was optimistic that those remaining on temporary contracts will be become permanent employees.

Ennio Meccia, Melfi’s assembly hall manager, said the 500X and Renegade are built on the same line on the same platform in a process that is flexible in terms of model mix. The line is currently running at 55 percent Renegade output and 45 percent 500X.

Meccia said 45 percent of Renegade production is exported to North America and more than 90 percent of these exports are powered by a U.S-sourced 2.4-liter gasoline engine.

Jeep’s head of European sales, Dante Zilli, said Renegade sales are “comfortably above” targets.

Grand Punto lives on

FCA has not announced a successor for its aging Grand Punto, which the automaker has stopped selling in some European markets, including the UK.

Grand Punto production has fallen by about three quarters since it was launched 10 years ago.

Meccia said production of the hatchback will continue into 2016. "After that we will see," he said.

Se i numeri sono questi, dubito che la Renegade possa aumentare le vendite in USA a medio termine. Già adesso vendono tutte quelle che possono produrre.......

questo è un bel casino. Imho con il suv tamponi un po’ negli usa, ma la cina pare problematica. Il cassone potrebbe essere allettante in russia, ma mi sa che c’è l’embargo.

Si, però visto il MY 2016 ho capito che sarebbero stati cazzi. tutta la roba elettronica è importante oggi, una macchina da 70.000 in su non può montare poco o nulla.

partono bene, spendono anche dei bei soldi e poi dopo 2 anni lasciano tutto com'è , cassa e via andare...se vuoi rifarti ,anzi crearti, una clientela ci devi star sotto MOLTO di più.

mah..vediamo...Marchionne ha parlato di lancio del SUV e "issues to solve"...occhio che oggi nessuno è immune dall'insuccesso e una bella linea non te la fa più vendere da sola la macchina.

Il cassone nel suo genere dal vivo non è malaccio, bisogna vedere se le dotazioni saranno di livello adeguato.
