Who's Where? Wolfgang Egger leaves Italdesign

Wolfgang Egger (51) has left Italdesign. We hear that the news was announced at Italdesign's annual Christmas party last week, where Volkswagen Group executives expressed their thanks for his work. It has not yet been confirmed what Egger will do next, or whether he will remain with the Volkswagen Group. Likewise, a successor at Italdesign has not yet been announced.

Egger moved to Italdesign in December 2013 from Audi, where he had undertaken a controversial tenure as chief designer. Egger began that role in 2007, but he didn't take over operational responsibility until February 2012. Previously, the bulk of those responsibilities were handled by Stefan Sielaff, while Egger spent a lot of time in the Munich design studio, where he would come up with alternative proposals. He enjoyed a particularly close relationship with Audi CEO, Rupert Stadler.

In 2012 and 2013, Egger set out to reorganize the Audi design department; at the same time, he aimed to create a new design direction. His ideas are epitomized by the 2012 Crosslane and the 2013 Nanuk concept cars. The delayed second-generation Audi Q7, to be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2015, also bears the mark of Egger's design preferences.

The personnel moves at Audi caused considerable friction; exterior chief designer Achim Badstübner left for other pastures at Daimler in Sindelfingen at the start of 2014, while Egger was eventually replaced by former Volkswagen designer Marc Lichte, who brought a number of his associates with him – namely, exterior designers Andreas Mindt and Philipp Römers.

Egger began his career at Alfa Romeo; after a stint at Seat, he returned to the Fiat Group – first to Lancia, then again to Alfa Romeo – before moving to Audi in 2007. His impressive portfolio includes the Alfa Romeo Nuvola concept and the 8C Competizione. Most recently, he worked on concept cars like the Italdesign Clipper, launched in March 2014 at the Geneva show.

As for Italdesign, its role remains as a separate studio that will provide input for many of the VW Group's important models – similar to the Munich studio's role for Audi, but on a much larger scale.

Founded by Giorgio Giugiaro in 1968, Italdesign shaped global automotive design throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Giugiaro designed the first-generation VW Golf, Scirocco, and Passat; he penned vehicles like the Fiat Panda and Uno, many Hyundai models and the Daewoo lineup of the 1990s. There were sports cars, too, including the Maserati Bora and the DeLorean DMC-12; and luxury cars like the Maserati Quattroporte III.

Like all Italian design houses, Italdesign experienced a decline in the 1990s and the 2000s. But unlike the competition, the company found an incredibly strong partner in the Volkswagen Group, which took over 90.1 per cent of the firm in August 2010. The investment met the approval of VW supervisory board chief Ferdinand Piech, who is said to be a friend of Giugiaro.

se lo caricano di soldi fa bene. Alla fine nella sua attuale prestigiosissima e invidiatissima posizione aveva pur sempre WDS sulla testa, magari da altre parti, oltre che gran soldi potrebbe fare un po’ quel cacchio che gli pare stilistiscamente.

ho sentito di alcune offerte che hanno fatto da far impallidire...

per qualche milionata all'anno (più magari buona uscita) mi tingo di giallo e mi metto le mollette ai lati degli occhi pure io.
