According to a recent report, BMW is preparing an estate version of the M3 range-topping model.

Slovenian Avto Magazin says the M3 Touring will probably be ready for this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show with sales starting shortly after.

No other details are currently available but it’s not hard to imagine the model will get sporty bumpers, larger wheels and all other exterior and interior features of the M3/M4.Power will likely be provided by the same 3.0-liter engine with 431 PS (317 kW) and a maximum torque of 550 Nm (406 lb-ft).

When fitted to the sedan and the coupe, this unit provides a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration in 4.1 seconds, so the M3 Touring will likely be 0.1-0.2 seconds slower. The 250 km/h (155 mph) top speed will remain unchanged.

M3 Touring smentita:

A BMW official has denied the Bavarian marque is working on a Touring version of the M3 Sedan.

The report concerning the existence of an M3 Touring was just too good to be true as M development chief Carsten Pries told Autovisie it's not going to happen. He justified the company's decision by saying that any M model must have global appeal and the market for an M3 Touring would be too small to justify the costs. He went on to specify the hot wagon would be successful in Central Europe, but anywhere else it wouldn't be so attractive.

Arch rivals Mercedes-Benz and Audi have a different opinion as the Daimler-owned company has the C63 / C63 S Estate while Volkswagen's premium marque sells the RS4 Avant. BMW says that for the same reasons there won't be an M5 Touring at least during this generation which will be replaced sometime in 2017.
