Chevy's decision to call its new electric car the Bolt has stirred controversy and confusion, but regardless, it's well on its way to becoming a production reality.

The prototype captured in these shots is heavily camouflaged, but the crossover/hatchback styling cues are still evident. The car also has a tall greenhouse, slight creases in the sides, and a sloping roofline in back. There's a rapidly rising body line that makes for less glass for rear passengers, but that's probably part of the camo. The Bolt is expected to arrive for 2017 and will be sold in all 50 states.

The Chevy Bolt carries the promise of bringing EV technology to a broader audience. Chevy said the car will cost about $30,000 after possible tax incentives and could have a range of 200 miles. It will be assembled at General Motors' Lake Orion, MI, factory.

The Bolt will augment the plug-in hybrid Volt in Chevy's green fleet, and it will compete against vehicles like the BMW i3 and Nissan Leaf.

Press Release:

Chevrolet Leads Expertise in ElectrificationBrand introduces four new electric vehicles in 2015

DETROIT – Chevrolet is bringing electric vehicles to the masses. The brand is committed to providing technology solutions that simplify customers’ lives and make driving fun.

Chevrolet has made a significant commitment to electrification for consumers around the world, as witnessed by the introduction of the 2016 Volt, Malibu Hybrid, FNR Concept and production commitment to the Bolt EV.

“Chevrolet’s advanced EV technology is designed to simplify the lives of our consumers,” said Alan Batey, president of General Motors North America. “With four new vehicles introduced since January, Chevrolet continues to prove its commitment.”

2015 Commitment to Electrification:

2016 Volt

The 2016 Volt, introduced at the North American International Auto Show, provides consumers 50 miles of EV range and a total driving range of over 400 miles, thanks to an all-new, second-generation Voltec extended range electric propulsion system. Volt owners can expect to drive over 1,000 miles between fill-ups. The all-new 2016 Volt will go on sale this fall.

Bolt EV

Building on Chevy’s expertise gained from the Volt, the Bolt EV, the game-changing, next-generation all-electric vehicle, is designed to offer more than a GM-estimated 200 miles of range at a target price of around $30,000.

2016 Malibu Hybrid

Employing technology from the 2016 Volt propulsion system, the Malibu Hybrid offers an estimated combined fuel economy rating of 47 mpg – unsurpassed in its segment. The 2016 Malibu Hybrid goes on sale in the spring of 2016.

Chevrolet–FNR Concept

The Chevrolet-FNR concept debuted at the 2015 Shanghai Motor Show and received the Best Leading Technology Award.

The Chevrolet-FNR is a self-driving EV concept designed to meet the transportation needs of the future. It integrates the right blend of technology and can sense driver biometrics, switch between autonomous and manual driving and even suggest alternative driving routes if time permits.

GM just revealed details about how it plans to take on Tesla

General Motors is getting serious about electric cars.

The automaker revealed Tuesday that it is partnering closely with LG to produce an electric motor, battery cells, and other components for its new Chevrolet Bolt EV, which will travel more than 200 miles on a single charge and go into production during late 2016.

GM currently only offers one other all-electric car, the Spark EV, and it only has a range of about 80 miles on a single charge.

The company first unveiled the Bolt EV in January as a concept car. In February, GM said it would actually make the vehicle at its Orion assembly plant in Michigan.

The Bolt EV’s range and expected price tag of about $30,000 puts it in direct competition with Tesla’s upcoming Model 3, which will be the company’s first mass market car. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said earlier this year the Model 3 would cost roughly $35,000, and go into production in two years. The Model 3 is expected to have a range similar to the Tesla Model S, which is about 250 miles.

Musk said Tesla cannot begin producing its more affordable electric vehicle until its giant Nevada-based battery factory, called the Gigafactory, begins production in 2017.

With the Chevy Bolt EV slated to go into production during the second half of next year, GM could very well beat Tesla to the punch.

While Tesla gets most of the glory for sparking the revolution of plug-in premium electric cars, GM was actually a pioneer of the technology in the 1990s. But the automaker got out of the electric car business because it wasn't very profitable.

GM is looking to get back into the business in a big way though with its new EV Bolt.

According to GM’s website, the Bolt EV will also boast some semi-autonomous features, including automatic park-and-retrieval technology. Owners will be able to exit the vehicle and use the Bolt EV app to tell the car to park itself and to retrieve the car for pick-up.

The Bolt EV will also be able to charge 80% of its battery in 45 minutes, according to the company.

Si carica 80% in 45min e ha 320km di autonomia.
