Volkswagen has staged the world premiere of the Tiguan GTE Active concept at the 2016 North American International Auto Show.

It’s basically a rugged version of last year’sTiguan GTE concept and this new iteration was designed for outdoorsy people. Just like the Euro concept, it combines a plug-in hybrid arrangement with a 4MOTION all-wheel drive setup. Power comes from a turbocharged gasoline engine with 148 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque working together with two electric motors. The first one generates 54 hp at the front axle, while the second motor provides 114 hp to the rear wheels.

With a combined output of 221 hp sent to all four wheels, the Tiguan GTE concept completes the sprint to 60 miles per hour in 6.4 seconds and tops out at 120 mph (70 mph in electric mode). Power is channeled to both axles through a six-speed, dual-clutch automatic gearbox specially adapted for hybrid use. Inside the transmission’s casing, VW’s engineers incorporated the front electric motor to enable better packaging.

As far as range is concerned, the vehicle can run solely on electric power for up to 20 miles (32 km) thanks to its 12.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Combined with the 16.9-gallon fuel tank, the maximum range stands at 580 miles (933 km). Filling up the high-voltage battery can be done externally or through the combustion engine. The Tiguan GTE concept is not AWD-only as the selectable driving modes can grant the crossover with a FWD or even a RWD configuration.

The main highlight inside the familiar cabin is VW’s next-gen modular infotainment platform (MIB) featuring a 9.2-inch touchscreen with support for gesture controls. It also comes with an all-digital and configurable instrument cluster that’s 8.2-inch wide and 4.1-inch tall. Needless to say, the Tiguan GTE Active concept provides support for a wide variety of connectivity solutions, including Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and MirrorLink.

The Tiguan GTE Active concept serves as a sneak preview for the all-new US-bound Tiguan set to arrive early next year. It will be different than the European version as the model programmed to be sold in North America will have a longer wheelbase and a seven-seat arrangement. Production will start late this year at the Puebla factory in Mexico and just like its European brother, it will ride on the flexible Modular Transverse Matrix platform.
