In other words, Tesla has not “completed” a Model 3 “beta prototype” as of, well, either of these two dates: December 31, 2016 (the period that the SEC filing covers), or March 1, 2017 (the date on which the document was filed). Pick your poison.

Tesla showed the Model 3 at an event on March 31, 2016. There were three cars on stage, two of which were actually drivable—the black and silver ones. A third car—the red one—was a shell on a wooden frame. Tesla gave rides to media and fans, in what were then called design prototypes by company representatives, and those two cars have been seen around California and Nevada numerous times since.

Were those two cars from March 31, 2016, considered the “alpha prototypes”? It now sounds plausible.

We know that around mid-February 2017, Tesla is said to have started building the next stage of Model 3 prototypes. It is from this batch that they appear to be creating the first “beta prototype.”

What does this mean for production? In theory, there is nothing that prevents Tesla from delivering what a normal car company would call a prototype test vehicle of some sort and simply declare victory on its original timeline. This is what Tesla did for the Model S in June 2012 and for the Model X in September 2015. After those events, it took at least another approximately three months—arguably a fair bit more—for proper volume production to take root.

 

That is to say that, no matter how immature, Tesla could indeed deliver a Model 3 in July 2017 and declare victory. However, that is not to be confused with what a normal car company would call its start of sales to the general public.

Tesla has matured a lot since the Models S and X, and it can no doubt develop the less complex Model 3 faster than it did with the S and the X. That said, there are limits to everything, and there is less room for error in durability testing and overall quality with this mass-market entry.

Basically, it comes down this: If it’s prudent to start production of an all-new car three to six months after the advent of a “beta prototype,” then why don’t all automakers do this? Why do they take approximately two years for the preproduction testing stages, if only three to six months are necessary?

We will find out in the second half of this year.

Bravo, continua a prendere per il popo' la gente, invece di controbattere nel merito con argomentazioni valide.

 

Questo perde miliardi da anni, in un mondo normale sarebbe dentro per bancarotta fraudolenta, estorsione e circonvenzione di incapace, invece ce lo ritroviamo adorato da una massa informe di adepti che al palesarsi di un minimo dubbio cominciano a prendere in giro i propri interlocutori.

Come ho scritto, nel mio caso non adoro Musk, semmai lo ammiro, poiché piuttosto che godersi la valanga di soldi presi vendendo la PayPal, si è messo in testa di "provare" a cambiare la mobilità individuale. Non sto a disquisire i risultati economici, poiché è tremendamente difficile oggigiorno (ma anche in passato) creare realtà e strutture come la tesla ed essere in utile dopo qualche anno. Se così fosse, credo che lo avrebbero fatto in molti costruttori tradizionali, prima di Musk (basta leggersi quante perdite sta avendo BMW con il brand i), però da qualche parte, per cambiare le cose, bisogna pur cominciare a mio avviso.

 

Tu citi anche che "in un mondo normale, saremmo già alla bancarotta fraudolenta". Può essere, ma se lo lasciano fare alla luce del sole, probabilmente avrà preso i suoi accordi con il Governo. Non biasimo neanche chi, come te immagino, sia scettico e perplesso sul modo di finanziarsi, o sulle modalità di gestione della Tesla stessa da parte di Musk e delle isitituzioni...ma se sono lì, un motivo ci sarà. Io mi limito a dire che se oggi voglio guidare una Tesla, basta andare a San Babila a Milano, e comprarne una, o ancor meglio, la compro direttamente a casa con il mio smartphone e me la consegnano in 14gg (se in stock da qualche parte). Vuol dire che qualcosa, concretamente, esiste e non è la solita scatola cinese fatta per drenare soldi dei contribuenti, classica operazione all'Italiana (ponte sullo stretto in primis, per esempio)... ma pratica comune non solo in Italia, tuttavia.

 

Ad ogni modo trovo interessante quello che sta cercando di fare e sono affascinato dalle sue vetture. Auguro che questo progetto abbia un seguito ed un futuro prospero.

Se una società è indebitata non significa che stia fallendo o sia tutta una truffa, Tesla sta facendo investimenti enormi a lungo termine, la gigafactory in primis, e per ovvi motivi non riesce a rientrare con i proventi della vendita delle vetture. Musk è riuscito a convincere molti clienti e investitori del suo piano industriale, che sicuramente è molto azzardato, ma visti i suoi precedenti direi di aspettare e vedere, prima di criticare. Se non fosse stato per questo individuo a quest'ora nessuno si sarebbe mai sognato di investire nella mobilità sostenibile, per questo lo stimo come imprenditore, di sicuro non lo idolatro.

 

L'esempio di Tesla è quello che accade sistematicamente negli USA e in molte altre parti del mondo, se hai un idea e riesci a convincere qualcuno a finanziarla puoi andare sulla Luna, o su Marte. I vari Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Zuckenberg, Musk e compagnia bella hanno avuto una visione del mondo, non del guadagno della fabbrichetta. Mi spiace che siate così ancorati ad un concetto antiquato di impresa, per la cronaca siamo nel 2017.
