PSA Peugeot Citroën is introducing a new-generation platform the EMP2, or Efficient Modular Platform, in 2013. The Group's platform policy initiated in 1998 enhances vehicle diversity, shortens time-to-market and optimises production capacity. The platform approach is also effective in reducing weight and fuel consumption and increasing quality and economic competitiveness. All new C- and D-segment models will be built on the EMP2 and the platform will in the long term account for half of Peugeot and Citroën vehicles sales worldwide.

EMP2 development

When reviewing the upgrade of its PF2 and PF3 platforms in late 2008, the Group decided that the best solution would be to replace them by a single, new-generation platform offering broad geographic reach and breakthrough modularity.

EMP2 is an optimised response to several objectives:          

• coverage of all world body styles, namely the C, D, F and premium segments
• modular design for cross-range component use and grouped volumes
• major advances in weight and fuel-consumption reduction
• innovative tech choices to enhance vehicle features
• technical compactness for greater exterior styling freedom.

The strategic new platform will, as early as 2013, with the launches of the New C4 Picasso and 308 replacement, serve as a showcase for the Group's technical and manufacturing abilities while meeting the main needs of the world auto markets.

Diverse global product offer

The Group will use the modularity of the new platform to develop a diverse range adapted to customer expectations, including:

• Family cars (short and long)
• Coupés
• Estate cars
• MPVs
• SUVs
• Light commercial vehicles

 

Improved features

In terms of weight reduction – synonymous with enhanced performance and driving pleasure – and vehicle features, PSA Peugeot Citroën chose exclusive architectures and innovative technologies to boost customer benefits.

The compact design of the EMP2 responds to new styling trends and also brings drivers more comfort and pleasure, with best-in-class manoeuvrability and improved sound insulation. Motorists get more reliability as well as new equipment, including driving aids and connectivity functions.

 

Major advances in weight reduction

The new platform is 70 kg lighter than its predecessor thanks to:

• across-the-board use of lighter and innovative materials such as composites, aluminium, and steel with a very high elasticity limit
• leading-edge shaping and assembly processes (hot stamping, laser welding, variable-thickness rolling)
• adaptable, downsized modules.

Sharp cut in CO2 emissions

The first vehicles developed on the EMP2 platform will consume roughly 22% less fuel, a significant achievement gained through:

• optimised engines (torque, power, friction)
• systematic use of the Stop and Start system
• Selective Catalytic Reduction systems for reduced powertrain pollution on the Euro6 diesel engines
• considerable friction reduction and comprehensive aerodynamic treatment.

 

Strong manufacturing objectives

The Group invested €630 million to develop the new platform. The EMP2 is already a reality at the Vigo and Sochaux final assembly plants, which will produce the first two body styles on the platform starting this year.
