Sure to attract attention: just a few weeks after unveiling the GLC SUV, Mercedes-Benz is presenting the GLC Coupé. The next generation of the successful model skilfully and intricately combines the sportiness of a coupé with the functionality of an SUV. The result is a vehicle for individualists who attach maximum importance to extraordinary looks, the greatest possible freedom and pioneering technology. Innovative technologies, intelligent driving assistance systems and a new engine line-up make the Coupé a paragon of sportiness, safety and efficiency.

The GLC Coupé impresses with its distinctive appearance, innovative driving assistance systems, a new engine line-up and the latest generation of the MBUX Mercedes-Benz User Experience infotainment system with its wide range of control options. The enhanced driving assistance systems have been expanded by adding an exit-warning function, emergency-corridor function and tail-end-of-traffic-jam function, among others. Also new is Trailer Manoeuvring Assist, which provides assistance when manoeuvring in reverse.

Mesmerising coupé rear: elegant exterior design

The GLC Coupé is characterised by its dynamic appearance and elegant lines. Hallmark off-road features include the dominant front end, powerful forms and standard-fit chrome details like the front and rear underride guards. Its coupé character shines through in the squat silhouette with the dropping roof line and rounded rear window. Highlights at the front end include the powerfully contoured diamond radiator grille with integrated star and single louvre typical of a coupé, complemented by the distinctive air intakes and the new contours of the standard-fit LED High Performance headlamps.

The GLC Coupé shows how the design features of a coupé can be harmonised with those of an SUV with its dropping roof line, the greenhouse that fits perfectly into the silhouette and the feature line in combination with the eye-catching chrome strip on the high beltline, the muscular shoulders and the rearwards-ascending light-catching contour. On top of this, the dynamic proportions and the generous ground clearance emphasise the GLC Coupé's range of abilities – it's just at home on smooth tarmac as it is on a dirt track.

Intelligence and convenience: the interior

Flawless luxury and user-friendly controls abound in the Coupé's interior. As is usual for Mercedes-Benz, particular importance is given to the interior. The focus is on the dashboard and the flowing lines of the centre console. The large, one-piece console panel sweeps elegantly from the centre air vents to the armrest. It has a premium feel and a build quality of exceptionally high calibre. The interior colour magma grey is completely new. The completely revised multifunction steering wheel is available in two versions. Its operation of Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and the Touch Control buttons for controlling the instrument cluster and the infotainment system as well as the acoustic input feedback set new standards.

The multifunctional touchpad on the centre console improves operating convenience even further, and replaces the rotary pushbutton, while the infotainment system has larger touchscreen displays with 12.3 inches in the instrument cluster plus 7 inches with 960 x 540 pixels and 10.25 inches with 1920 x 720 pixels in the central display. In addition to this, the latest generation of the MBUX Mercedes-Benz User Experience infotainment system boasts intuitive logic and a wide range of control options. There are five different ways to interact with the GLC's infotainment system:

  • By touch control on the central display
  • Using the Touch Control buttons on the multifunction steering wheel
  • With the multifunction touchpad on the centre console
  • Via optional gesture control with the Interior Assistant
  • By voice control, using the "Hey Mercedes" prompt

The optional ENERGIZING comfort control combines various in-vehicle systems to create an optimum environment. This integrates lighting and music moods, climate control, suitable music and video selections as well as a massage function, heating and ventilation for the seats. The ENERGIZING COACH uses data from the vehicle and surroundings to recommend one of the programmes that fits the situation and the individual.

The state-of-the-art driving assistance systems are augmented by the exit-warning function, emergency-corridor function and tail-end-of-traffic-jam function, among others. New features include Trailer Manoeuvring Assist, which provides assistance when manoeuvring in reverse. The system uses sensors in the ball head and a magnetic ring to measure the angle between towing vehicle and trailer. The 360° camera offers good all-round visibility and a greatly enhanced image on the display.

Increased efficiency: the new engines

At market launch the GLC Coupé will be available with new engines, with further engines to be added to the line-up during the course of the year. All the diesel models already meet the requirements of the Euro 6d standard (RDE – Real Driving Emissions Stage 2), which comes into force in 2020. This is achieved thanks to the insulated configuration of the exhaust-gas aftertreatment system installed directly on the engine. It consists of diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC), particulate filter with SCR catalytic converter function (sDPF) and SCR catalytic converter with AdBlue® injection. The system is augmented by an additional selective catalytic reduction (SCR) converter with an ammonia slip catalyst (ASC) in the exhaust tract of the GLC. The petrol engines are electrified by the integration of a 48-volt on-board electrical system (EQ Boost). The belt-driven starter-generator is responsible for hybrid functions such as boost or energy recuperation, while allowing fuel savings that were previously the reserve of high-voltage hybrid technology. In addition to reducing consumption and CO2 emissions, the technology also enhances both comfort and performance.

The GLC Coupé at a glance

  • Expressive design: The stylish appearance of the new Coupé generation encapsulates the Sensual Purity design philosophy and combines the flexibility of an SUV with the sense of style and sportiness of a coupé. The A-pillars have a more pronounced slope, which lowers the roof silhouette. The model owes much of its extraordinary character to the diamond radiator grille, which is available in silver as standard or black in conjunction with the Night package, featuring a chrome trim incorporating formal elements of the underride guard. Further eye-catching features include the standard-fit LED High Performance headlamps with their torch design and unmistakable light signature. The elegant lines are drawn to a successful conclusion by the compact rear end featuring a new-look diffuser with underride guard and tailpipe trims as well as full-LED tail lamps.
  • MBUX - Innovative telematics: The combination of the touchscreen displays, navigation with augmented reality, intelligent voice control via the talk button or the "Hey Mercedes" prompt, connectivity and the user interface makes the GLC Coupé state of the art.
  • Suspension: As an alternative to the standard sports suspension with adaptive damping, DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL with infinitely adjustable dampers for the steel springs on the front and rear axle is available as an option. Depending on the driving situation, speed and condition of the road, the damping is controlled individually for each wheel in interaction with the engine, transmission and steering characteristics. AIR BODY CONTROL air suspension is also available - to further enhance comfort and sportiness.
  • Advanced assistance systems: Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Steer Assist provide even more comfortable support to help the driver to keep a safe distance and steer. The speed is adjusted automatically ahead of bends or junctions. Active Steer Assist helps with forming an emergency corridor and with changing lanes. The risk of potential collisions can be reduced by the turn-off function of Active Brake Assist by braking if the driver fails to see oncoming traffic.
  • Drive system: The GLC Coupé comes with a choice of efficient four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines from the latest generation. The diesel engines already meet the requirements of the Euro 6d standard. The petrol engines are electrified by the integration of a 48-volt on-board electrical system (EQ Boost).

The new-generation GLC Coupé is a blend of exceptional and sophisticated features, further underlining its leading position with this combination of style and ability. At present, Mercedes-Benz has a very successful presence in the SUV segment with seven models (GLA, GLC, GLC Coupé, GLE, GLE Coupé, GLS, G-Class).

[1] Figures for fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are provisional and were determined by the technical service for the certification process in accordance with the WLTP test method and correlated into NEDC figures. EC type approval and a certificate of conformity with official figures are not yet available. Differences between the stated figures and the official figures are possible.

Affalterbach. Mercedes-AMG is introducing a comprehensive range of measures in a fundamental update of its successful GLC 43 4MATIC SUV and Coupé models (combined fuel consumption: 10.6-10.21 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 242-232 g/km)[1]. The AMG-specific radiator grille, the new-design lights, the expressive front apron and the broad emphasis of the rear end with its round twin tailpipe finishers add up to make these entry-level models into the world of Mercedes-AMG SUVs visibly more appealing. The 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine now develops 287 kW (390 hp), in other words 17 kW (23 hp) more than before. In conjunction with the responsive AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission, the rear-biased AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive system and the AMG DYNAMICS agility control system, it has thus been possible to enhance the driving experience, as well as the car's agility, still further. The latest version of the MBUX infotainment system, with AMG-specific functions and displays, introduces an innovative control concept that adds to the vehicle's feasibility for everyday use. This is further enhanced by the exceptional amount of space provided for passengers and luggage, as well as by a comprehensive range of safety features.

"The new GLC 43 4MATIC SUV and Coupé in their latest guises also feature the AMG-specific radiator grille, identifying them straight away as fully-fledged members of our diverse and highly successful SUV family. This mid-size performance SUV combines new, expressive design features with enhanced performance, the innovative MBUX infotainment system and absolute viability in everyday use. And, of course, its exceptional agility and sporty driving dynamics mean that we are able to meet our brand promise of "Driving Performance" in this segment, too", says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Enhanced performance meets efficiency: the AMG 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine

Both the SUV and the Coupé benefit from an increase in the output of the 3.0-litre V6 engine of 17 kW (23 hp), taking it to 287 kW (390 hp). The peak torque of 520 Nm is available from 2500 to 4500 rpm. The higher output can also be attributed to applicative adjustments made to the software. The larger, stand-alone turbocharger units are mounted close to the engine and respond particularly swiftly, thereby guaranteeing exceptional performance: it takes a mere 4.9 seconds for the SUV and Coupé to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. The powerful AMG engine is visually identifiable by its engine cover with red aluminium insert and AMG lettering.

The exterior: AMG-specific radiator grille and more distinctive headlamps

Thanks to the AMG-specific radiator grille with its vertical chrome-plated fins, it is very quickly clear: these GLCs come from Affalterbach. The restyled, flatter LED High Performance headlamps with flare effect for the daytime running lamps serve to emphasise the expressive character of the front section. The matt black fins over the air intakes feature trim elements in Silver Shadow, enhancing the car's visual presence yet further.

Seen from the side, the accentuated side sill panels are a particularly striking feature of both the SUV and the Coupé, in the way they give an optical illusion of lowering and elongating the whole vehicle. A similarly eye-catching feature are the aerodynamically optimised AMG light-alloy wheels, with the 19-inch variant with AMG lettering fitted as standard. A selection of five further rim variants, ranging from 19 to 21 inches in size, are available as options.

The distinctive rear end, too, with its broad apron, diffuser and two round twin tailpipes, adds to the sporty look. As with the front view, the redesigned LED tail lights provide for an unmistakable light signature.

Interior: sporty spaciousness with red highlights

The interior design continues through with the sporty design idiom of the exterior and helps to emphasise the dynamic ambitions of the new GLC 43 4MATIC. This mid-size performance SUV features sports seats as standard, which offer improved lateral support to both the driver and front passenger. The upholstery, in black ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre, has a distinctive seat upholstery layout with red topstitching. Trim elements in aluminium with a longitudinal grain serve to highlight the car's sporty aspirations.

The SUV and Coupé models of the GLC 43 4MATIC both offer plenty of space for passengers and luggage in conjunction with a variable interior, an extensive range of safety features and a high level of long-distance comfort. Additional possibilities for individualisation come courtesy of the new appointment options of cranberry/black leather and magma grey/black leather.

Dynamic design, exceptional ergonomics and intuitive controls are the hallmarks of the new, standard-fit AMG steering wheel in DINAMICA microfibre. It has a flattened bottom section and is perforated in the grip area. The galvanised steering wheel gearshift paddles allow an even sportier driving style with manual gear shifting. The optionally available AMG steering wheel buttons allow faster and more precise control of specific dynamic handling functions. These consist of a round controller with an integrated display beneath the right-hand steering-wheel spoke, plus two vertically positioned colour display buttons with switches beneath the left-hand steering-wheel spoke. Thanks to the ergonomic positioning of the additional steering wheel buttons within the immediate grip area, the driver's hands remain on the wheel at all times – thanks to the intuitively understandable functionality, the driver can keep their eyes on the road throughout.

Control at your fingertips

The latest version of the MBUX infotainment system further underlines the car's viability for everyday use and establishes an even closer connection between vehicle, driver and passengers. Whether it's operated with the touchpad, Touch Control buttons on the steering wheel, by voice control or gesture control: the operating system of the GLC 43 4MATIC is just as versatile as it is flexible.

And needless to say, the trailblazing voice control activated with the words "Hey Mercedes" is also on board. Thanks to artificial intelligence, MBUX recognises and understands nearly all sentences from the fields of infotainment and vehicle operation, even if they are expressed indirectly.

The driver receives visual information via the 12.3-inch instrument cluster on the left and the 10.25-inch touchscreen display on the right. With the three AMG-specific display styles of "Classic", "Sport" or "Supersport", the vehicle functions are brought immediately to life.

From comfortable to sporty, from steady to agile: five drive programs and AMG Dynamics

The GLC 43 4MATIC SUV and Coupé come with a choice of five drive programs: "Slippery", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport+" and "Individual". Using these allows the characteristics of the vehicle to be individualised even further with the mere touch of a finger. The available range extends from efficient and comfortable to extremely sporty. The programs modify key parameters, such as the response of the engine, transmission, suspension and steering. The programs are now linked to the AMG DYNAMICS agility control system, which means that the handling characteristics can be set to meet various requirements and driving conditions with even more differentiation.

In the case of the Performance SUV models, the umbrella term AMG DYNAMICS encompasses the agility functions "Basic" and "Advanced", which are automatically selected by the respective drive program. Parameters relevant to driving, such as the control threshold of the completely redesigned ESP® (Electronic Stability Program), are intelligently adjusted according to the selected drive program. This means that while the full scope of ESP activity is retained, the available spectrum in terms of lateral dynamics is considerable. The driver can select here between "Stable" and "Agile".

  • "Basic" is assigned to the "Slippery" and "Comfort" drive programs. In this case the GLC 43 4MATIC demonstrates very stable handling with a high level of yaw damping.
  • "Advanced" is activated in the "Sport" and "Sport+" programs. The GLC 43 4MATIC is then neutrally balanced. The lower yaw damping, lower steering angle requirement and enhanced agility support dynamic manoeuvres such as driving on winding country roads.

Speedy shifting: the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission

The GLC 43 4MATIC features the tried and tested AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9-speed automatic transmission (TCT = Torque-Clutch Transmission), which is specifically configured to deliver a dynamic driving experience. It is optimally tuned to the engine and promises the agile pulling away that is so typical of AMG, along with speedy gearshift changes – either automatic, or manual via the steering wheel shift paddles. The model-specific software application means that very short shift times can be achieved.

The multiple downshift function allows more spontaneous bursts of speed, while the double-declutching function in the "Sport" and "Sport+" drive programs makes for an even more emotive driving experience. Defined ignition adjustments also provide faster gear shifts in the other modes. In all modes moving off occurs in first gear in order to always guarantee a dynamic driving experience.

Optimum grip: AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive

The standard-specification AMG Performance 4MATIC four-wheel drive features rear-biased torque distribution with a front/rear axle split of 31 to 69 percent. This configuration provides for enhanced driving dynamics and higher lateral acceleration on the road as well as improved traction when accelerating. The single-stage transfer case of the four-wheel drive system is flange-mounted to the transmission as a separate system.

Self-adjusting: the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension

AMG RIDE CONTROL+ combines the advantages of various types of suspension in one. It is based on the AIR BODY CONTROL air suspension with AMG-specific Adaptive Damping System (ADS PLUS), thereby ensuring both sporty driving dynamics and the comfort on long journeys that is such a hallmark of the brand. The multi-chamber air suspension offers a very broad spread between the most comfortable and the most sporty set-up and adapts to the current load. Thanks to the pneumatic all-round level control system, the vehicle level remains constant, independently of the load it is carrying. At high speeds the vehicle is lowered, to reduce wind resistance and further increase stability.

The adaptive damping adjustment AMG RIDE CONTROL+ comes as standard. This fully automatic, electronically controlled system adjusts the damping at each wheel to the current requirements. This improves driving safety and ride comfort. The damping is adjusted individually for each wheel, and depends on the driving style, the road surface and the selected suspension setting. The ideal operating point can be selected at all times on the basis of a broad scope of information relating to acceleration or vehicle speed, for example. Via a switch on the centre console, the driver can select between three different sets of damper characteristics, namely "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport+", and thus individually influence the driving experience — from highly comfortable to sporty.

Precise feedback: the AMG speed-sensitive steering

The electromechanical speed-sensitive power steering has a variable ratio and impresses with its precise, authentic feedback. The steering servo assistance is reduced at high speeds, and continuously increases at lower speeds. This means that comparatively little steering force is required at low speeds, while the best possible control over the vehicle is maintained at high speeds. The steering assistance is assigned to the various stages of the AMG DYNAMICS system. In 'Advanced' the driver receives more feedback about the driving status.

Affalterbach. Sharpened vehicle dynamics, optimum connectivity, operation via gesture control: Mercedes-AMG is updating the successful GLC 63 4MATIC+ models (fuel consumption combined: 12.4-12.1 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 283-275 g/km)[1] . The SUV and coupé are being given a new, even more distinctive light design as well as the MBUX infotainment system with AMG-specific functions and displays. The new dynamic handling control AMG DYNAMICS and the locking differential, which is now controlled electronically on all models as standard, facilitate even more versatile driving experiences. The SUV and coupé are also the only vehicles in the competitive environment to be driven by an eight-cylinder biturbo. Maximum driving pleasure is also ensured by the air suspension with adaptive damping adjustment, the all-wheel drive with fully variable torque distribution and the high-performance compound brake system. The mid-size performance SUV also offers plenty of space for passengers and luggage, a variable interior, extensive safety features and a high level of comfort on long journeys.

With an officially measured and notarised lap time of 7.49.369 minutes, the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S 4MATIC+ (combined fuel consumption: 12.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 283 g/km)1 is currently the fastest SUV in the world on the North Loop of the Nürburgring.

"The lap record on the North Loop has proven to impressive effect that the GLC 63 is right at the top of its segment in terms of vehicle dynamics. With our V8 biturbo, we hold a decisive USP in the competitive environment. With AMG DYNAMICS we were able to hone the vehicle dynamics even more and also further increase the suitability for everyday use and the connectivity with MBUX. This makes the GLC 63 an all-rounder for every occasion", says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Acceleration from zero to 100 km/h is completed by the GLC 63 4MATIC+ in 4.0 seconds, the S models in 3.8 seconds. The top speed of the base model is 250 km/h (electronically limited, with the AMG Driver's package 270 km/h), 280 km/h for the S models. The impressive driving dynamics are based, among other things, on the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension with adaptive damping adjustment, the electronically controlled differential lock, which is now also standard on all variants, and the dynamic engine mounts, which are part of the standard equipment on the S models.

Expressive front view with restyled headlamps

On the exterior design the expressive front section with the AMG-specific radiator grille widening out towards the bottom and the vertical black louvres immediately catch the eye. The restyled flatter LED High Performance headlamps reinforce the visual presence with the flare look for the daytime running lamps. The wide front apron in a jet-wing design, combined with the large front splitter, emphasises the power of the new models. By dispensing with a fine-meshed grille, it gives a view of the cooling technology – a typical attribute from the world of motor sport and a further differentiation from the other GLC models. Wider wheel arch claddings at the front and rear likewise accentuate the dynamic appearance.

The side sill panels make the SUV and coupé appear to sit lower on the road while elongating the overall lines. The muscular tail end is dominated by the wide rear apron and the diffuser. The redesigned LED tail lamps also ensure an inimitable light signature – with distinctive blocks in a backlit edge-light design. Two trapezoidal twin tailpipes in high-sheen chrome round off the exhaust system.

The S-model is visually characterised by exclusive design highlights. These include the 5-twin-spoke 20-inch light-alloy wheels, longitudinal member panels with inserts in matt iridium silver and the rear apron with diffuser fins and diffuser board with a trim strip in matt iridium silver.

Listens to words and reacts to gestures: the MBUX infotainment system

The new MBUX infotainment system helps make the car highly suitable for everyday use. Whether it is operated with the touchpad, Touch Control buttons on the steering wheel, by voice control or gesture control: the operating system of the GLC 63 4MATIC+ is just as versatile as it is flexible. All options are aimed at enabling the control tasks to be carried out as conveniently, quickly and appropriately to the situation as possible.

With the new optional MBUX interior assistant, selected functions can be operated touchlessly and the reading light can be switched on and off. The advanced 3D camera system make operation easier for the driver and front passenger through approach detection, illumination support and rapid access to favourites. To do this it evaluates hand movements in the area between the media display and touchpad. In practice this means: as soon as the hand approaches the touchscreen or touchpad the MBUX interior assistant depicts certain control elements on the media display in enlarged form or highlights them. This applies to the menus of the homescreen, radio/media, map navigation, Active Parkin Assist and the seat adjustment.

The assistant differentiates between driver and passenger interaction and recognises certain hand positions and movements. The interaction area for the MBUX interior assistant is in front of the media display up to the centre console, including the touchpad between the driver and the front passenger.

And needless to say, the trailblazing voice control activated with the words "Hey Mercedes" is also on-board. Thanks to artificial intelligence, MBUX recognises and understands nearly all sentences from the fields of infotainment and vehicle operation, even if they are expressed indirectly.

The driver receives visual information via the 12.3 inch instrument cluster on the left and the 10.25-inch touchscreen display on the right. with the three AMG-specific display styles of "Classic", "Sport" or "Supersport" it brings the vehicle functions directly to life.

Additional information for an even sportier driving experience

Via the specific AMG menu, the driver is able to call up a host of additional information to make the driving experience even sportier, such as Warm-up, Setup, G-Force or Engine Data. The visualisations in the central touchscreen media display equally enable further vehicle functions to be experienced even better, among other things through animated presentation of the driving assistance, vehicle and communication systems and AMG TRACK PACE. There is also the AMG TRACK PACE view in the optional head-up display with circuit graphic, bends, braking points, delta speed and absolute times.

In addition there is a digital display of the speed and the currently engaged gear. Manual transmission mode is identified by a yellow "M" and a prompt to shift up when reaching maximum engine speed, a touch inspired by the world of Formula 1.

Ergonomics, functionality and quality at the highest level: the interior

The interior underscores the leadership ambition of the new mid-size Performance SUVs in terms of driving dynamics. Driver and front passenger are enclosed as standard in sports seats in ARTICO man-made leather, combined with DINAMICA microfibre, which unite excellent lateral support with functional ergonomics tailored to the job of driving.

The instrument panel is trimmed in black ARTICO man-made leather with contrasting topstitching as standard. The high-grade look is underlined by aluminium trim. The touchpad is flanked by the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT switch and numerous AMG-specific controls, such as the button for the 3-stage AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension, 3-stage ESP® or the button for the optional AMG Performance exhaust system with flap control.

The S model variant comes with an even more extensive equipment package, including an AMG steering wheel in black nappa leather/DINAMICA microfibre and AMG badges in the front head restraints.

New AMG steering wheel generation now also standard in the GLC

Extremely sporty design, a grippy shape with a heavily contoured rim and intuitive operation are the key attributes of the new AMG steering wheel in DINAMICA microfibre, which comes as standard. It has a flattened bottom section and is perforated in the grip area. The galvanised steering wheel gearshift paddles allow an even sportier driving style with manual gear shifting. On the S model, the steering wheel comes as standard with a rim in nappa leather/DINAMICA microfibre (optional for base model). The AMG steering wheel is optionally available in nappa leather with trim in black piano lacquer, DINAMICA all-round as well as DINAMICA with trim in high-gloss carbon fibre.

The integrated Touch Control buttons can be used to control the functions of the instrument cluster and the infotainment system by means of horizontal and vertical swiping of the finger. The innovative steering wheel buttons are standard on the S model. The AMG drive programs are controlled and depicted on the integrated LCD display using the round controller. Using the two freely configurable display buttons further AMG functions can be operated directly within easy reach on the steering wheel.

Adapt to the body using air cushions: the performance seats

The optional AMG Performance seats provide optimum lateral support when adopting a dynamic driving style thanks to the special design of the seat side bolsters of the seat cushion and backrest. As an option, the seat side bolsters adjust perfectly to the body contours by means of built-in air cushions. The performance seats additionally lend the interior an even sportier character with their integral head restraints. The seat heating ensures pleasant seating comfort even at lower outside temperatures.

More agility with high stability: AMG DYNAMICS

Depending on the engine, up to six drive programs are available: "Slippery", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport+", "Individual" and "RACE" (S model only). The programs are linked to the AMG DYNAMICS agility control, which means that the handling characteristics of the GLC 63 4MATIC+ can be set to meet various requirements and driving conditions with even more differentiation.

Behind the umbrella term AMG DYNAMICS are the agility functions "Basic", "Advanced", "Pro" and "Master" (S model only), which are automatically selected by the respective drive program. Driving-relevant parameters such as the torque distribution of the all-wheel drive, the interventions of the electronically controlled locking differential and the control thresholds of the completely redeveloped ESP® are intelligently adjusted depending on the drive program.

  • "Basic" is assigned to the "Slippery" and "Comfort" drive programs. In this case, the GLC 63 4MATIC+ shows very stable handling with high damping of the yaw rate.
  • "Advanced" is activated in the "Sport" program. The GLC 63 4MATIC+ is then neutrally balanced. The lower yaw damping, lower steering angle requirement and enhanced agility support dynamic manoeuvres such as driving on winding country roads.
  • “Pro” (abbreviation for “professional”) is part of the “Sport+” programme. In “Pro” the driver receives even more assistance for dynamic driving manoeuvres while agility and precision are further enhanced when taking corners.
  • "Master" (only in the S model) is coupled with the RACE drive program. "Master" mode is aimed at drivers who want to experience dynamism and the driving enjoyment on closed-off circuits. "Master" offers an extremely neutral vehicle balance, low steer angle requirement and more agile steering. In this way, "Master" ensures maximum agility and fully exploits the dynamic potential.

Irrespective of the drive programs, as before the driver can use the buttons in the centre console to directly select manual transmission mode, their favoured suspension level and also the exhaust system, for instance.

The only models with a V8 biturbo

The 4.0-litre eight-cylinder biturbo engine is already used in numerous AMG performance vehicles. A characteristic feature is that the two turbochargers are positioned not on the outside of the cylinder banks, but inside the cylinder "V". The main advantages of this design are the compact engine construction and optimal response. The spray-guided direct petrol injection system ensures clean and efficient combustion with high thermodynamic efficiency. Fast-acting piezo injectors enable multiple injections of fuel to be delivered to the engine on demand and with the utmost precision.

The extensive engine cooling system ensures the engine's performance even under extreme loads. The same is true for the flow-optimised cylinder heads, which are made of a special heat-resistant alloy. Continuous adjustment of the intake and exhaust camshafts improves power delivery and efficiency. It delivers excellent throttle response and optimises the charge cycle for every operating point. An oil pump with variable control also contributes to low fuel consumption.

One mechanic assembles each engine in the engine shop in Affalterbach according to the "one man ‑ one engine" principle.

The as-standard typical V8 engine sound comes courtesy of an exhaust system with flap technology. The flaps are controlled by a map and automatically operated depending on the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive program, the power demanded by the driver and the engine speed. Optionally available is the Performance exhaust system, which allows the sound to be modulated at the press of a button.

Soaked: the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission

A wet start-off clutch replaces the torque converter on the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission. It saves weight and optimises response to accelerator pedal commands, especially when accelerating or coming off the power.

"Manual" mode can be selected using a separate button in the centre console. The gear changes are based on the selected drive program, and the driver can now change gear using the paddles on the steering wheel. Moreover, the transmission stays in the selected gear and does not automatically shift up when the engine speed reaches the limit.

Delivers optimum grip: AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive

The intelligent AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive combines the advantages of various drive configurations in one: the fully variable torque distribution to the front and rear axles ensures optimal traction right up to the physical limit. the driver is also able to rely on high handling stability and a high level of safety under all conditions, in the dry, in the wet or in snow. The transition from rear-wheel to all-wheel drive and vice versa is seamless, because the intelligent control is integrated into the overall vehicle system architecture.

An electromechanically controlled clutch connects the permanently driven rear axle fully variably to the front axle. The best possible torque split is continuously computed according to the driving conditions and driver's input. Transitions are seamless and based on a sophisticated matrix. Alongside traction and lateral dynamics, the all-wheel drive also improves the longitudinal dynamics for even more powerful acceleration.

Ideal combination of dynamism and comfort: the suspension

The agility, highly dynamic lateral acceleration and maximum grip of the new models are also thanks to the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension with fully supporting multi-chamber air suspension and adaptive adjustable damping. which ensures exceptionally high levels of camber stability, driving dynamics and steering precision. The vehicle level can also be adapted to different driving conditions.

The front axle features a four-link design with special steering knuckles, optimised elastokinematics and radial brake connections. Independent wheel control and wheel suspension elements enable higher lateral acceleration with minimal torque steer.

The model-specific multi-link concept at the rear axle impresses with highly precise wheel control and increased rigidity. The AMG-specific rear axle carrier makes the wider track possible in comparison with the GLC from Mercedes-Benz, while the contact surfaces of the wheel bearings have also been moved further outwards. Other measures include AMG-specific wheel carriers, stiffer elastokinematic tuning and higher negative camber.

Intelligent air display for optimum driving characteristics

Thanks to a sporty spring and damper set-up and the adaptive damping adjustment, the new three-chamber air suspension system combines exemplary driving dynamics with excellent road roar and tyre vibration characteristics. The stiffness of the air springs can be adjusted over a wide range by activating or deactivating individual air chambers, making for perceptibly enhanced comfort and handling.

There are three degrees of spring tuning, depending on the selected drive program and current driving status. The spring rate is hardened automatically in the event of sudden load changes, fast cornering, heavy acceleration or heavy braking. This effectively reducing roll and pitch while stabilising the performance SUV and coupé.

The adaptive damping adjustment is also part of the standard specification. This fully automatic, electronically controlled system adjusts the damping at each wheel to the current requirements. This improves the driving safety and the ride comfort. The damping depends on the driving style, the road surface and the selected suspension setting. The ideal operating point can be selected at all times on the basis of a broad scope of information relating to acceleration or vehicle speed, for example.

Via a switch on the centre console or the freely configurable switches on the steering wheel the driver can select between three different sets of damper characteristics, namely "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport+", and thus individually influence the driving experience — from highly comfortable to sportily taut.

The GLC 63 4MATIC+ SUV and Coupé are shod as standard with 10-spoke light-alloy wheels 8.0 J x 19 (front) and 9.0 J x 19 (rear) painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and with tyres of size 235/55 R 19 (front) and 255/50 R 19 (rear). The dimensions for the GLC 63 S 4MATIC+ SUV and Coupé are 265/45 R 20 (front) and 295/40 R 20 (rear) on 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish in 9.5 J x 20 (front) and 10.0 J x 20 (rear). There are other, optional wheel/tyre combinations as well as forged wheels, up to sizes of 265/40 R 21 on 9.5 J x 21 on the front axle and 295/35 R 21 on 10.0 J x 21 wheels on the rear axle.

Sensitive and fast: the locking differential

For improved traction and driving dynamics, all models are equipped with an electronically controlled locking differential. This reduces the slip on the inside rear wheel when cornering, without any control intervention in the braking system. The result is that it allows the driver to accelerate out of corners earlier thanks to the improved traction. The vehicle remains more stable when braking from high speed, while the limited-slip differential also improves traction from rest.

The greatest benefit of electronic control is its even more sensitive and even faster adjustment capability in changing driving situations: which pushes the critical threshold higher, making it even easier to drive at the vehicle's limits. The three-stage ESP® with "ESP ON", "ESP SPORT Handling Mode" and "ESP OFF" settings works in perfect unison with the rear-axle limited-slip differential and is optimally tuned to the outstanding dynamics.

Direct and with clear feedback: the AMG speed-sensitive steering

The electromechanical speed-sensitive power steering has a variable ratio. It impresses with its precise and authentic feedback and can be preselected in the two settings "Comfort" or "Sport". The steering servo assistance is reduced at high speeds, and continuously increases at lower speeds. This means that comparatively little steering force is required at low speeds, and that the best possible control over the vehicle is maintained at high speeds. Furthermore, the power steering system is dependent on the current lateral acceleration, the chosen AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive program or the damping adjustment setting.

Sensitive and steadfast: the high-performance compound braking system

In line with the high output values the eight-cylinder models have a large-dimensioned brake system consisting of internally-ventilated, perforated compound discs at both the front and rear axles, with 6-piston fixed callipers used at the front and single-piston floating callipers at the rear.

As an option, an AMG high-performance ceramic composite brake system with bronze-coloured 6-piston fixed callipers at the front and single-piston floating brake callipers at the rear can be ordered. This leads to additional weight savings and lower unsprung masses. Further advantages are their even greater overall sturdiness and fading stability under high stress. The brake system also wins points with a high service life and immediate response – guaranteeing fast lap times.

All brake systems can impress with short brake paths, sensitive responsiveness and high life expectancy, even in the case of extreme stress. Among the comfort features of the vehicle are hill start assist, priming and dry-braking in the wet. With the ignition switched off and the vehicle at a standstill, the transmission automatically selects Park position "P". Meanwhile, the electric parking brake releases automatically when pulling away.

S model with dynamic engine mounts as standard

The more powerful GLC 63 4MATIC+ S comes with dynamic engine mounts. These resolve the conflicting aims of comfort and dynamic performance by reducing vibrations in the engine/transmission unit. These dynamic mounts are instantly and variably able to adapt their rigidity to the driving conditions and style of driving. Soft engine mounts improve comfort, as they provide more effective decoupling of noise and vibration. However, handling and agility benefit from a generally stiffer mount set-up. The driver feels more connected to the vehicle when driving dynamically, as there is more feedback and the steering response is more direct. All in all, the driver benefits from a more precise driving sensation.

Wellness on long-distance journeys: ENERGIZING package

The optional ENERGIZING package networks different comfort systems in the vehicle and uses lighting and music moods to increase driver fitness safety and wellbeing. The "Refresh" programme brings fresh impetus on board – an intense air flow generates an invigorating climate. "Vitality" delivers new energy – for example by including lively music. "Training" switches from passive to an active approach: with exercise videos, breaks in driving can be used to relax the muscles. A new feature is the ENERGIZING COACH which recommends programs situatively.
