“Tourguide” – The next level of “MBUX Voice Assistant” for exciting journeys

Mercedes‑Benz is enhancing its “MBUX Voice Assistant” with a new Mercedes me service – the “Tourguide” acoustic travel guide.

Mercedes‑Benz digital services make travelling by car more entertaining and interesting for many customers. Right on time for the summer holiday season, the brand is launching the new Mercedes me “Tourguide” service as part of the “MBUX Voice Assistant”. When prompted, the acoustic travel guide reads out interesting and entertaining information about attractions along the route on German autobahns, providing a fun way to pass the time when travelling on holiday.

“Tourguide” – The acoustic travel guide from Mercedes‑Benz

The “Tourguide” audio travel guide is available as part of the “MBUX Voice Assistant” from Mercedes me in the EQS, EQE, C‑Class, S‑Class and AMG SL as well as the new GLC and the new EQS SUV, which have been in production since June 1, 2022. It adds an interesting and entertaining feature to the existing travel information functions. In response to the voice command “Hey Mercedes, start Tourguide”, the MBUX (Mercedes‑Benz User Experience) infotainment system reads out extensive information about points of interest along the route. Initially, the new audio travel guide is only available in Germany but will later be rolled out in other countries as well. The system responds to the approximately 3,400 brown-coloured tourist information signs along German autobahns.

If “Tourguide” is activated, MBUX automatically reads out useful information on places of interest along the way. On holiday trips or weekend getaways, or even for business travellers, “Tourguide” provides a welcome and informative interlude on longer journeys. The content for the automatic announcements was created exclusively for Mercedes‑Benz Group AG.

Announcements begin automatically when the car passes the first sign. If the driver takes a break or leaves the autobahn, the service switches off automatically after 90 minutes. Of course, the driver can also deactivate the service at any time, again by voice command or by touch. One especially convenient feature is the connection to automatic route guidance. If the “Tourguide” insights regarding a particular point of interest inspire users to pay it a visit, all they have to do is simply select the navigation function and they will be guided there directly, without having to dictate or enter the names of streets or towns.

Mercedes-Benz Q2 deliveries: Strong demand in a challenging environment as electric vehicles and Mercedes-Maybach outperform

  • Mercedes-Benz April to June passenger car deliveries reach 490,000 units (-16%)
  • Demand for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars remains high with strong order intake
  • Deliveries remain constrained by semiconductor shortages and logistical bottlenecks related to COVID-19 lockdown measures
  • Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) sales almost doubled to 23,500 units (+90%)
  • BEV ramp-up continues with EQE production underway and EQS SUV sales to start in the second half of 2022
  • Mercedes-Maybach Q2 retail sales reach all-time high of 4,400 (+25%)

Mercedes-Benz deliveries of passenger cars reached 490,000 units (-16%) between April and June as COVID-19 lockdown measures and a shortage of semiconductor components constrained supplies. Customer demand remained strong across all regions and segments, particularly for Top-End Luxury and electric vehicles.

The brand with the three-pointed star continues to scale up production and sales of electric vehicles. In the second quarter, Mercedes-EQ sales almost doubled to 23,500 units (+90%) and deliveries of xEV models (PHEVs and BEVs including smart) reached 65,400 units (+2%). During the first half of 2022, Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) sales rose by 134% to 45,400 units as volume models such as the EQE began rolling off the production line. Deliveries of xEVs reached 139,600 worldwide (+14%) during the same period.

“Customer demand remains high. This is an honour and obligation for us. We are making every effort to fulfil customer expectations, despite the current supply restrictions,” said Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing and Sales. ”The electric ramp up is gaining traction: Sales of our fully electric vehicles increased by more than 90% in Q2 and even 134% in the first half of 2022. It shows that we offer compelling electric vehicles that our customers desire.”

Top-End Luxury

Sales in the Top-End Luxury category (Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-Maybach, G-Class, S-Class, GLS and EQS) reached 71,900 units (-16%), with deliveries down in large part because Mercedes-AMG was impacted by chip-supply constraints.

Mercedes-Maybach delivered 4,400 vehicles, achieving its best-ever sales for a second quarter (+25%). The flagship S-Class had its highest ever second-quarter sales, with 21,700 cars and EQS deliveries reached 8,500 vehicles in the first half year, underlining the additional sales potential of its electric flagship.

Recently, Mercedes-Benz became the first car manufacturer in the world to start selling a conditionally automated driving system (SAE Level 3). DRIVE PILOT was made available to S-Class and EQS customers in Germany (link).

Core Luxury

Sales in the Core Luxury category, which includes the C-Class and E-Class, reached 275,900 units (-6%). The top selling Mercedes-Benz models remain the GLC and C-Class models, with 82,400 (-4%) and 84,900 (+5%) deliveries in Q2. Despite nearing the end of its product lifecycle, GLC deliveries reached their highest ever level for the month of June as well as recording their best-ever second quarter in the United States. Its successor model was announced in June (link).

Entry Luxury

Sales in the Entry Luxury category reached 132,600 units (-32%). For Mercedes-Benz, the switch to electric vehicles in this segment is gathering pace, with BEVs accounting for 14% of overall sales, a rise of 50% compared to the prior-year quarter. Deliveries of the Mercedes-Benz EQA rose by more than 50% to 7,000 and the fully electric EQB posted a very strong quarter with 5,500 sales worldwide.

Mercedes-Benz passenger car sales by regions and markets

Sales in Asia fell 20% in the second quarter due to the COVID-19 lockdown measures, but rebounded June, with China deliveries up 40% compared to May levels.

In Europe, sales reached 154,300 vehicles (-10%) with Germany accounting for 50,600 units (-4%). Almost every third vehicle sold in Europe in the first half of 2022 was an xEV (30%). In France 39% of customers and in the Netherlands 43% of clients opted for a BEV or hybrid Mercedes-Benz vehicle.

Sales in the North America region totalled 91,000 units (-3%), of which 79,100 passenger cars (-4%) were delivered to customers in the United States. In the first half of 2022, every tenth vehicle sold in the United States was a Mercedes-AMG.
