VW's MEB platform will underpin five Mahindra electric SUVs

Mahindra, which is the second customer for VW Group's MEB platform after Ford, will launch its electric SUVs under the XUV and BE brands.

 

Mahindra & Mahindra has unveiled five electric SUVs based on Volkswagen Group's MEB platform as the automaker seeks to expedite its lagging switch to battery-powered cars in India.

Mahindra is the second customer for VW Group's MEB platform after Ford, which will begin production this year of an MEB-based electric SUV built in its plant in Cologne, Germany.

The Mahindra electric SUVs will be sold under two brands -- XUV and BE, the automaker said in a video presentation on Monday.

The vehicles were conceptualized at the Mahindra Advanced Design Europe in the UK.

They will be underpinned by Mahindra's new Inglo electric platform, which will offer battery capacity ranging from 60 to 80 kilowatt hours and fast-charging of up to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes, Mahindra said. It did not specify the range of the EVs.

More than 1 million vehicles will be produced by the brands over the duration of the deal, VW said in a statement.

"The partnership not only demonstrates that our platform business is highly competitive, but also that the MEB is well on track to become one of the leading open platforms for e-mobility," Volkswagen management board member Thomas Schmall said.

Schmall declined to provide firm numbers but said that the agreement would translate into a significant operating result that he said would be comparable to a medium-sized brand within the VW Group.

Mahindra's VW-based SUVs will be called the XUV.e8, XUV.e9, BE.05, BE.07 and the BE.09. The first of the five electric SUVs will be launched by the end of 2024 in India while other four should be out by 2026, Mahindra said.

Mahindra has said it expects electric models to account for 20 to 30 percent of its total SUV sales by March 2027.

The company sells some of India's most popular combustion-engine SUVs, including the Scorpio and Thar.

Producing a range of clean vehicles is crucial for Mahindra to break the dominance of rival Tata Motors in India’s nascent electric car market.

Mahindra is a local leader in electric three-wheelers, but currently sells only one electric car, the e-Verito, despite having a first-mover advantage with its purchase of an India-based EV maker in 2010.

India's adoption of EVs has fallen behind other major countries such as China due to sparse charging infrastructure and the high upfront cost of battery-powered cars.

Decarbonizing transport is key for India, which is the world's third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, to meet its goal of becoming net-carbon zero by 2070. 

In a sign of how the market is getting crowded, Indian ride-hailing firm Ola Electric said on Monday that it plans to start producing electric cars in 2024 with a range of up to 500 km (310 miles) and prices of less than $50,000.

Volkswagen Group and Canada aim to advance sustainable battery supply chain in North America

Volkswagen AG and the Government of Canada aim to promote e-mobility in the country and to explore opportunities across Canada’s automotive and battery supply chain. This was agreed in a "Memorandum of Understanding" (MoU) signed today in Toronto by Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess and Canada's Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry, François-Philippe Champagne, in the presence of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Both parties will investigate opportunities for Canada to contribute to Volkswagen’s global and regional battery supply chains. PowerCo, the newly founded battery company of the Group, has a central role in these efforts and will drive forward the planned cooperation in the fields of battery value creation, raw materials supply chains and cathode material production in the North American region.

 

PowerCo SE is responsible for all global Group activities along the battery value chain, securing battery cell supply for Volkswagen's e-mobility push. The rapidly growing global battery cell business is a key pillar of Volkswagen’s NEW AUTO strategy, which aims to make Volkswagen the leading provider of sustainable and software-driven mobility. The plan is to quickly build up highly standardized cell production capacities totaling 240 gigawatt hours per year in Europe alone. In addition, there are plans to establish a dedicated gigafactory in North America. Possible production sites are currently being examined.

Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany: “I welcome that Volkswagen and Canada have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on battery value creation today. This is excellent proof that the cooperation with our close friends and allies in Canada is further deepening also in the context of raw material security and may encourage other companies to follow."

Joint statement with respect to sustainable battery manufacturing and reliable raw material supply

For the development of sustainable battery production, both parties intend to boost cooperation based on recognized ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) criteria between PowerCo and the Canadian mining sector, which is seen as a world leader in terms of responsibility and transparency. For this purpose PowerCo is planning to establish a new, dedicated liaison office in Canada. A key focus of cooperation is the supply of critical raw materials such as lithium, nickel and cobalt.

Both parties see significant prospects for Volkswagen and PowerCo to ramp up cathode material production together with partners and to offer Canadian suppliers an opportunity to act as raw material suppliers, refiners and processors.

With its vast raw material resources, good infrastructure and highly developed automotive industry with considerable production expertise and highly qualified workforce, Canada sees itself outstandingly well-positioned for joint projects.

Schmall commented: “The Government of Canada is a forward-thinking, effective enabler of businesses creating future-proof, well-paying jobs for Canadians, particularly in the green economy. This is one reason why Volkswagen and PowerCo are excited to work with such an approachable partner offering promising cooperation and engagement at all levels of government.”

Next Step of Growth Strategy for North America

The Volkswagen Group brands plan to offer the most comprehensive electric product portfolio in North America with more than 25 battery-electric models by the end of the decade; at the same time, strong regional capabilities for EV research and development, vehicle assembly, component production and supply relationships are being expanded across the North American continent.

“We’re committed to bringing electric mobility to consumers and communities in North America. Today’s agreement between the Volkswagen Group and the Government of Canada will enable us to work closely with local suppliers and expand our capabilities,” said Pablo Di Si, incoming President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “We continue to invest in electrification with plans to launch more than 25 battery-electric vehicles planned by 2030. A broad-based supply of raw materials from across the region will be key to support our ambitious growth plans.”

VW Group to trim executive board, report says

VW brand's procurement boss and the group's sales boss will lose their board seats under a reshuffle planned by new CEO Oliver Blume.

 

HAMBURG -- Volkswagen Group's supervisory board agreed on Tuesday evening to remove two seats from the automaker's 12-person management board, sources familiar with the matter said.

The news comes as Porsche CEO Oliver Blume takes over as VW Group CEO from Herbert Diess on Sept. 1.

The move signals a sharper focus under Blume's leadership following Diess' turbulent four-year tenure that saw the board swell to its current level.

VW's supervisory board discussed the move in a meeting on Tuesday evening but must still confirm a final decision in writing, the sources said.

VW declined to comment.

VW brand's procurement boss Murat Aksel and group sales boss Hildegard Wortmann will lose their board seats under the reshuffle, German media reports said.

Other management board members such as Audi CEO Markus Duesmann, VW brand CEO Thomas Schaefer and technology chief Thomas Schmall will keep their board seats, the reports said.

The appointment of the 54-year-old Blume as VW Group CEO reflects efforts by the automaker's controlling shareholder families to keep the group on a shorter leash and have greater say over strategy, sources have told Reuters.

Preliminary steps to list VW Group's Porsche brand on the stock market, a move which would further solidify the families' control, are expected in coming days, according to sources familiar with the matter, triggering an announcement of an initial public offering as soon as the first week of September.

Un articolo di Bloomberg sul gigantesco e non risolto problema di software delle Bev del gruppone, apparente ragione del siluramento di Diess.

 

Certo Blume è in situazione difficile ma secondo me fa bene ad arrestare l'infezione a multipli nuovi modelli finché non si sistema la cosa. 

 

Una questione è se rivolgersi all'esterno per il software, critica per mancati guadagni. 

 

Ma è significativo, come da esempio articolo, che la connessione con Apple car play salvi spesso i clienti dal blocco del sistema. Forse non c'è altra strada per i tempi brevi e medi, che appoggiarsi all'esterno.

La Skoda Fabia elettrica arriverà entro il 2030

Skoda conferma i piani per la nuova Fabia, che sarà solo elettrica. Costruita sulla piattaforma MEB, potrebbe diventare un crossover

Skoda accelera la sua strategia a zero emissioni. Dopo la presentazione del concept Vision 7S, il marchio boemo è al lavoro anche su altri modelli elettrici, a partire dalla prossima Fabia.

Nel corso di un’intervista rilasciata ad Autocar, infatti, il numero uno del brand Klaus Zellmer ha ammesso che lo sviluppo sulla nuova generazione è già iniziato.

Un lungo percorso

Anche se gli studi sono cominciati, Skoda avverte che ci vorrà tempo prima di vedere una Fabia elettrica su strada:

“Posso dire che la Fabia avrà un’erede 100% elettrica, ci stiamo già lavorando. Tuttavia, la sfida più grande è cercare di contenere il più possibile i costi. Non è facile adottare questa strategia per modelli di questo segmento. Per questo bisognerà aspettare qualche anno”.

È probabile che la compatta a batteria arrivi tra il 2027 e il 2030, con una struttura basata sulla piattaforma MEB. Di fatto, la Fabia elettrica potrebbe essere uno degli ultimi modelli a utilizzare questa architettura, prima del passaggio dell’intero Gruppo Volkswagen alla piattaforma SSP.

Nuova identità e ricariche velocissime

In termini di design, la nuova Fabia dovrebbe incorporare lo stile presentato dal concept Vision 7S. Il prototipo, infatti, ha anticipato il look delle prossime Skoda, incluso il nuovo logo. Al tempo stesso, è possibile che la Fabia assuma le forme di un crossover abbandonando le forme delle generazioni passate.

 

In ogni caso, il modello potrebbe adottare la stessa tecnologia del prototipo, a partire dalla ricarica ultraveloce da 200 kW.

In generale, entro il 2030 Skoda avrà una gamma interamente composta da veicoli elettrici. Oltre alla versione di serie della Vision 7S e alla Fabia, sono attesi un modello ultracompatto e un altro crossover.
