La teoria è quando si conosce il funzionamento di qualcosa ma quel qualcosa non funziona.

La pratica è quando tutto funziona ma non si sa come.

Spesso si finisce con il coniugare la teoria con la pratica: non funziona niente e non si sa il perché.

VW to decide by early February on new Trinity plant

VW will decide by early February on a new plant to build the Trinity self-driving flagship.

BERLIN -- Volkswagen will decide by late January or early February whether it needs a new factory to build its Trinity self-driving flagship cars, brand chief Thomas Schaefer said.

The Trinity model is 1.5 to 2 years behind schedule, Schaefer said, speaking to Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung and Wolfsburger Nachrichten.

The model was delayed in part because it was taking longer than expected to develop hands-free autonomous driving technology and get regulatory approval.

By the time it is ready, production of some combustion engine cars may have already ended in the main Wolfsburg plant, creating space to build the Trinity there instead of investing in a new factory, Schaefer said.

"Will Trinity come? Yes. Whether a new plant will be built is another question," he said.

Schaefer's comments are the first public explanation of why the factory may not be built. "The chances are 50:50," he said. "By late January, early February we will know which cars will be made in which plants on what platforms,"

Earlier, Automotive News Europe sister publication Automobilwoche reported that the Trinity production car likely will have crossover styling instead of the sedan design originally planned.

VW's new leadership team of VW Group CEO Oliver Blume and Schafer has ditched the sedan design in favor of crossover styling because of the popularity of SUVs and crossovers, sources told Automobilwoche. The original, low-slung sedan shape was planned to make the car aerodynamic and improve its driving range by more than 20 km to 600 km.

As part of a strategic review, Blume is reviewing whether to build the Trinity plant or to use the existing Wolfsburg plant, according to reports. Construction of the new factory was due to start next year, with the first Trinity models rolling off the production line from 2026.

VW, Italy's Enel launch JV for high-speed charging

VW and Enel will build 3,000 high-speed charging points across Italy.

Reuters

BERLIN -- Volkswagen Group and Italy's Enel have formed a joint venture to build 3,000 high-speed charging points across Italy for electric vehicles, investing 100 million euros ($105.38 million) each, VW said.

The charging points will be accessible to drivers of cars made by all manufacturers at 500 locations by the end of 2023 and will have a capacity of up to 350 kilowatts, VW said in a statement.

By the end of 2022, the automaker and its partners will have installed 4,300 of a planned 18,000 fast-charging points in Europe, 3,700 of a planned 10,000 in the U.S. and 8,000 of a planned 17,000 in China.

That comes to 16,000 fast-charging stations globally, around a third of its goal of 45,000 by 2025.

VW operates partnerships in Europe with BP and Spain's Iberdrola and is a shareholder in fast-charging venture Ionity with rival automakers BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Ford and Hyundai.

By ensuring there are enough charging points - and enough power - for EVs, VW hopes to convince drivers worried about battery ranges that they can ditch their fossil fuel cars for good.

Europe requires at least 3.4 million charging points by 2030, up from an estimated 375,000 available at the end of 2021, according to a McKinsey study for the European Automobile Manufacturers Association.

Renewable electricity must also be distributed across the charging grid at convenient times, coming to a cumulative cost of around 240 billion euros, according to the study.

"The main challenge is making the energy available when it is needed," VW technology boss Thomas Schmall said on Tuesday's press call. "Energy storage will play a key role."

VW will also roll out bidirectional charging, where cars can send energy from their batteries back into the grid, across most of its cars by mid-next year, Schmall added.

Vai che forse qualche Folgore-800 V la si piazza pure in Italia e non solo all'estero.....😁

Prossimo cambiamento nel board............

VW shuffles top purchasing posts amid supply chain disruption

The changes come after a top executive said the automaker is suffering "flat-out chaos" in the supply chain.

Volkswagen Group is restructuring leadership of its procurement functions to better cope with supply chain disruption.

Audi's procurement and IT boss, Dirk Grosse-Loheide, is promoted to head group procurement. He will also and take over from Murat Aksel as procurement chief for the VW passenger cars brand.

Aksel will join the management board of VW's MAN Truck & Bus subsidiary, taking over from Stefan Gramse, who will move to a group function at VW, the automaker said in a statement on Tuesday.

At Audi, Große-Loheide will continue to oversee procurement functions and IT until his successor is appointed.

VW Group CEO Oliver Blume said Große-Loheide's task will be to further stabilize the group's supply chains in close collaboration with suppliers.

One of the key tasks assigned to Aksel at MAN will be to further stabilize the company’s supply chains, which continue to be strained during the continuing ramp-up of truck production for heavy commercial vehicles, Blume added.

Aksel, a former BMW executive, has been VW's chief purchasing officer since January 2021.

The changes will come into effect on Jan. 1, VW said.

Like most automakers, VW has suffered delivery bottlenecks and production stops because of shortages of semiconductors and other components.

Earlier this month, VW brand chief Thomas Schaefer said the company's Wolfsburg plant is building well under 400,000 cars a year, less than half its capacity, because of "flat-out chaos" in the supply chain.

Bentley design chief Mindt to head VW brand styling

VW brand design chief Jozef Kaban will move to an unspecified new job at the automaker. Fellow VW Group veteran Andreas Mindt will be his successor.

Volkswagen brand is replacing its design chief, Jozef Kaban, with Bentley's design boss, Andreas Mindt, according to company sources.

Mindt will take up the post at VW brand on Feb. 1, the sources told Automotive News Europe sister publication Automobilwoche.

Mindt's successor at Bentley will be Tobias Suehlmann, who currently heads exterior design at the VW Group ultraluxury brand, people familiar with the matter said. Suehlmann joined Bentley in October 2021, having previously worked at Bugatti, Aston Martin, McLaren and VW brand.

Kaban, who took charge of VW brand design in 2020, will be given a new post within VW Group.

VW brand's new CEO, Thomas Schaefer, has not been impressed by some of Kaban's designs, according to sources.

Kaban was asked to change the retro styling of the ID Life concept unveiled at the 2021 IAA Munich auto show for a more modern look. The concept was supposed to preview the look of VW's entry-level ID electric car due in 2025.

Schaefer also asked Kaban's design team to rework the styling VW brand's upcoming Trinity flagship EV to give it a crossover look instead of a sedan appearance.

Kaban started his career in 1999 at VW Group, where he worked for Audi, Bugatti and Skoda.

Father's footsteps

Kaban's successor, Mindt, is also a VW Group veteran.

Mindt, 53, grew up in Wolfsburg, home of VW's global headquarters. His father was a designer at VW.

VW declined to comment on the changes. The company is expected to officially announce the appointments in the coming days.
