Audi will add small EV in electric push, CEO Duesmann says
The Q6 E-tron SUV will start Audi's product offensive when it launches later this year

Audi will launch an “entry level” full-electric car below the Q4 E-Tron compact SUV, as the brand prepares to launch 20 new models by 2025 to match EV product pushes by rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

CEO Markus Duesmann announced the EV at Audi’s annual news conference on Thursday. Duesmann declined to provide details of the vehicle or its planned launch date. He said more details will be revealed in the coming months.

Audi parent, Volkswagen Group, is developing a new family of small EVs for the VW, Skoda and Cupra brands that will be underpinned by a shortened version of VW Group's MEB electric platform. On Wednesday VW brand unveiled its concept for the first of those models, the ID 2all small electric hatchback.

Audi's EV could use VW Group's more advanced SSP (Scalable Systems Platform) electric architecture that will underpin software-focused upmarket EVs in VW Group, according to motoring press reports.

The Q6 e-tron undergoing winter testing. Audi CEO Markus Duesmann said the model will be fully revealed this summer. The Q6 will be the first model on the Audi/Porsche PPE platform.

The first model in Audi’s product offensive will be the Q6 e-tron midsize electric SUV, which will debut the VW Group’s PPE (premium platform electric) architecture, which Audi developed together with Porsche. The next-generation Porsche Macan will also be on the PPE platform.

The Q6 e-tron will have an 800-volt electric system, as does the e-tron GT, which allows for shorter charging times. It will be available in Sportback and more conventional SUV variants; prototypes are now undergoing testing and the model will be revealed without camouflage this summer, Duesmann said.

The Q8 Sportback e-tron large coupe-style SUV is a new model for Audi this year, joining the more traditonally styled Q8 e-tron SUV in the brand's lineup.

A critical year will be 2024, when Audi will launch more than 10 new models and upgrades, including cars on the new PPC (premium platform combustion) architecture. Those cars include the next generation A4 compact and A6 midsize models – and will be the last new internal-combustion generation as Audi becomes an electric-only brand by the early 2030s.

By 2027, he said, Audi will have about 20 full-electric models in its lineup, with an EV in every main segment.

The new A4 and A6 “will be contributing to the success of our company for years to come, but the road is clearly heading toward 100 percent electric,” Duesmann said.

Audi was an early mover in premium EVs with the E-tron SUV, which was launched in 2019 (an upgraded model has been renamed the Q8 e-tron), but in recent years Mercedes-Benz and BMW have expanded their electric lineups to include large and flagship sedans, including the Mercedes EQE and EQS and the BMW i7 and i5 (launching later this year). Audi does not yet have a full-electric A8, and an electric A6 is not due until 2024.

Audi barely outsold Mercedes in global EV sales in 2022, 118,196 to 117,800, but both brands trailed BMW, which moved 172,011 EVs last year. But while BMW’s EV sales grew by 148 percent, and Mercedes’ roughly doubled, Audi’s full-electric sales grew by just 45 percent.

The Activesphere, a crossover that converts to a pickup, is one of four "Sphere" concepts shown by Audi.

'Sphere' concepts suggest future EV possibilities
Audi has not offered details on most of the new models planned until 2027, but it has unveiled four “Sphere” concepts that hint at future shapes and technical possibilities.

In January the automaker showed the Activesphere, a 4,980 mm-long self-driving sportback crossover that can be transformed into a pickup and rides on 22-inch wheels. It is designed to ride on the PPE platform, and would have a range of 600 km (373 miles).
The Urbansphere, shown in April 2022, has a more conventional four-door hatchback shape, and was developed for the Chinese market.
The Grandsphere, a large luxury sedan with rear-hinged back doors, was shown in September 2021. It is designed for fully autonomous driving.
The Skysphere is a roadster concept with an automatically adjustable wheelbase that can shorten by 10 inches to create a “dual personality” driving experience, between self-driving and driver-controlled models. It was shown in August 2021.
One segment that is not likely to appear in future Audi lineups is the small hatchback, where Audi sells the A1 model, which is built on the VW Group’s MQB platform. Duesmann confirmed that a successor is not planned to the current generation, which was launched in 2018. Earlier, he cited increasing compliance costs for small internal-combustion engine vehicles as a factor in the decision.

"We haven't planned a direct successor for it because we have to tighten our model range and make it leaner," he said Thursday. "We are clearly positioning ourselves as an all-electric premium brand."

  • Salzgitter, Valencia, St. Thomas: PowerCo forges ahead with expanding its global battery business
  • Cell factory in Valencia to start production of the unified cell in 2026, creating more than 3,000 direct jobs
  • Initial capacity of 40 GWh per year with potential for further expansion
  • Sustainable batteries: PowerCo sets on manufacturing with 100 % green electricity from solar and wind power
  • The Spanish President Pedro Sánchez: “The factory that will be built here exemplifies the Spanish Government's commitment to innovation and sustainable mobility.”

PowerCo SE is taking the next step in building its global battery business: In the Spanish region of Valencia, the company today gave the starting signal for construction of its second PowerCo cell factory in the presence of His Majesty King Felipe VI, Spain’s President Pedro Sánchez and Ximo Puig, President of the Valencian Generalitat. Gigafactory Valencia will start production of the unified cell in 2026 and will directly employ more than 3,000 people in the future, with a further up to 30,000 indirect jobs potentially being created at suppliers and partners in Spain according to a recent study. The Volkswagen Group has made battery technology a core element of its NEW AUTO strategy and has established PowerCo, a separate battery company. Since its launch in July 2022, PowerCo has decided three sites for cell factories: Salzgitter, Valencia and St. Thomas in Ontario/Canada, two of them already under construction.

The Spanish President Pedro Sánchez: “The factory that will be built here exemplifies the Spanish Government's commitment to innovation and sustainable mobility. It is a sign of our commitment to industry, but also to the characteristics that define an entrepreneurial nation in the global market: innovation, territorial cohesion and public-private cooperation.”

Thomas Schmall, Board of Management member responsible for Group Technology and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of PowerCo SE: “We are moving into the fast lane with PowerCo. We have just broken ground for PowerCo’s second gigafactory in Valencia, and are already making the next step with the announcement of another gigafactory in St. Thomas, Canada. Our objective is to make PowerCo a global player in the battery business and pave the way for better mobility with sustainably manufactured battery cells. The gigafactory Valencia is an important milestone in that.”

Frank Blome, CEO of PowerCo: “Like the Volkswagen Group, PowerCo stands for responsible conduct. That includes good working conditions, care for the environment and sparing use of scarce resources. We want to be a good neighbour to the people in the region and make a significant contribution to economic development. Not only will we create more than 3,000 jobs of the future, but we also intend to work with the regional government to initiate targeted projects aimed at strengthening science and society.”

Gigafactory Valencia: Potential for 60 GWh

The annual production capacity is initially 40 GWh, but has the potential to be expanded to 60 GWh in the future. The cell factory is being built over an area of around 130 hectares in Sagunto, in the immediate vicinity of Valencia. Together with the planned supplier park, which will be built parallel to the PowerCo factory, the area even amounts to 200 hectares. Important factors in deciding to build the site in Valencia included the availability of low-cost green electricity, the regional research and innovation cluster, as well as the good transport infrastructure and proximity to the Group’s Spanish production sites. The Valencia gigafactory will supply unified cells to the vehicle plants in Martorell and Pamplona, among others.

The President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig, thanked the Volkswagen Group and SEAT for their commitment to Sagunto and the Valencian community: "Mission Valencia stands for a productive alliance between PowerCo, the Generalitat, and the governments of Spain and Europe on the path towards a sustainable transition in mobility. Looking forward, we have the Valencian Community behind us to accelerate our ambitious work with full confidence in what we can achieve when we act together.”

PowerCo is aiming to manufacture sustainable batteries in Valencia. The cell factory will be supplied completely with green electricity generated by solar and wind power, for instance by a new 250-hectare solar farm in the immediate vicinity. The raw material cycle will be closed directly on the site of the cell factory

10 billion investment programme for the electrification of Spain

Gigafactory Valencia is a core component of the 10 billion euro investment programme called “Future: Fast Forward” which the Volkswagen Group announced last year together with PowerCo, its Spanish subsidiary SEAT S.A. and 49 partners. Under the plan, Volkswagen will also electrify its car factories in Martorell and Pamplona as part of the PERTE programme for electric and connected vehicles.

PowerCo bundles the Volkswagen Group’s global battery business throughout the value chain – from raw material supply and development to the construction and operation of gigafactories. By 2030, PowerCo and partners are expected to generate annual revenue of over 20 billion euros.
