Ferrari’s electric supercars will feature distinctive engine noise created through a new amplification system, according to a patent filed by the automaker and cited by analysts at Oddo BHF.

The patent covers a “reproduction device for the realization of a sound that can be associated with an electric motor,” Oddo BHF wrote in a note. Ferrari declined to comment when contacted by Bloomberg News.

That would allow the carmaker to amplify sound from one or more onboard electric motors before rerouting the roar out through the rear of the car, the broker said. Ferrari is set to start production of its first-ever electric supercar in 2025.

Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna told investors at the company’s capital markets day in June that sound is one of the “essentials that characterizes a Ferrari.”

Every engine has its own “signature” sound, Vigna said, adding that he expected Ferrari’s electric cars to have their own signature engine roar, too.

Ferrari’s research into electrification supports Oddo’s view that the carmaker should be able to offer “a compelling and innovative EV product when it comes to the market in 2025,” according to a note on Tuesday. The Maranello, Italy-based carmaker “is not a laggard in that respect,” Oddo said.

“A successful sound-reproducing technology could somewhat compensate for the loss of engine sound,” Oddo wrote in the report, as it rated Ferrari shares outperform.

Ferrari Files Patent for Gas Thruster, Pulse Jet Handling System for Supercars

Elon Musk mentioned something like this for Tesla years ago, but Ferrari has drawn up a system that could work for real.

Ferrari, like any good supercar manufacturer, is always looking for ways to get more performance out of its cars. Whether it's funky new shocks from Multimatic or advanced hybrid systems coupled to ever more powerful turbocharged engines, the Italian automaker has a slew of tricks up its sleeve. One recent patent application is out of left field, though. The Maranello brand is looking into gas thrusters.

This may sound familiar to any Tesla fans out there. Elon Musk has talked about a similar system for the new Tesla Roadster and Ferrari's concept is roughly the same. I wasn't able to find a patent on Tesla's system, though—at least not describing something like this so explicitly. Ferrari's patent was also filed in late 2019, although it was only published a few days ago.

As Jason Fenske at Engineering Explained has... uhh... explained before, gas thrusters to increase the performance of a car are actually plausible. A good way to do it is with compressed air, but the pressures are huge. Ferrari's patent states that between 700 and 900 bar is necessary, or between 10,000 PSI and 13,000 PSI. Creating such a pressure vessel to contain this immense force is surprisingly possible; hydrogen storage tanks in fuel cell vehicles already do it. That's not the only method Ferrari suggests, however.

Let this sentence mark where the sanity ends in this patent application.

Ecco....

Why Ferrari will keep making V-12s for as long as possible
The Italian supercar maker's commitment to its biggest engine comes as rivals drop their V-12s because of pressure to reduce CO2
.

While rivals are downsizing to turbocharged V-6s or V-8s for their crossovers, Ferrari went the opposite direction, choosing its naturally aspirated V-12 for the new Purosangue.

Europe might be in the midst of an electrification transformation, but Ferrari has no plans to give up on its most powerful internal combustion engine: the naturally aspirated V-12.

"We will invest into this type of engine as long as it will be possible," Ferrari Product Marketing Manager Pietro Virgolin

Ferrari's commitment to the V-12 comes as rivals drop their largest engines because of pressure to reduce CO2.

For example, the Rolls-Royce Black Badge Wraith Black Arrow will be the BMW Group subsidiary's last V-12 coupe as it transforms into an electric-only brand.

The limited run of 12 units is already sold out, Rolls-Royce said Monday.

BMW dropped the same engine last year.

Bentley has said it will stop production of parent Volkswagen Group's 6.0-liter, W-12 engine next year as the brand shifts to selling electric cars.

"The time has come to retire this now-iconic powertrain as we take strides toward electrification," Bentley CEO Adrian Hallmark said in a statement.

The Italian supercar maker also plans an electric car, due to in 2025, but has not revealed plans to go all-electric.

It further underlined its combustion-driven position with a surprising decision to drop a 6.5 liter, V-12 into the new Purosangue's engine bay.

Most competitors in the sporty crossover/SUV space have opted for turbocharged V-8s or V-6s.

Virgolin said Ferrari chose to use the V-12 in the Purosangue, the brand's first four-door car, "because it offered the best performances and enabled a better positioning within the Ferrari product range."

Bigger engine also means higher price tag.

At 390,000 euros in Italy,  the Purosangue will cost nearly twice as much as a V-8-powered Roma coupe. Meanwhile, the SF90 Stradale plug-in hybrid, which uses a turbocharged V-8 with total power output of 986 hp, is even more expensive, starting at 440,000 euros.

Profit margins for cars with larger engines are also higher, Ferrari says.

While Ferrari isn't giving up on V-12s, they only accounted for 18 percent of the company's European sales in 2022, led by the 812 GTS roadster, according to market researcher Dataforce. The V-12 share is expected to grow in the short term because of demand for the Purosangue.

Different paths - The list of V-12s in high-end cars is short.

Aston Martin offers them in the DB11 and DBS coupes.

Mercedes-Benz offers a V-12 on the top-of-the-range Maybach sedan.

Lamborghini said the plug-in hybrid supercar that will replace the Aventador coupe will have a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter, V-12 engine coupled with three electric motors.

The Volkswagen Group subsidiary's first plug-in hybrid is scheduled to be unveiled next week.

While Ferrari offers plug-in hybrids featuring V-8 and V-6 engines, it has no plans to hybridize its
V-12 engine.

In addition, Ferrari is fighting a bid by Europe's lawmakers to ban the sale of models with internal combustion engines (ICEs) starting in 2035. Ferrari and Porsche are among the automakers that believe synthetic e-fuels should be carved out from the EU's planned 2035 ban.

A final vote on the 2035 ban was due on March 7, but was indefinitely delayed amid fears that Germany could abstain, which would torpedo the regulation.

Should Europe enact an ICE ban in 2035, Ferrari and its competitors would still be able to market their V-12s, V-8s and V-6s in many other parts of the world. But for Ferrari a ban would hurt as more than 40 percent of its shipment were to Europe last year.

Ferrari, Porsche get a big win from EU decision on e-fuels

Ferrari sees an extended life for roaring combustion engines after the EU's deal with Germany on synthetic fuels.

Ferrari and Porsche will benefit from plans to exempt cars that run on e-fuels from the European Union's planned 2035 phase-out of combustion engine vehicles.

"The good news for us as a company is that on top of electric cars, we will also be able to go on with our internal combustion engines ones," CEO Benedetto Vigna said.

"This decision is very interesting for us because it allows ICEs to go beyond 2036," he told a Reuters Newsmaker event on Monday.

Ferrari, which is renowned for its powerful gasoline engines, has never provided a roadmap for going all electric.

The company is already producing plug-in hybrid cars and has promised its first full-electric vehicle for 2025.

Vigna said the full-electric model would be "a unique car" but did not discuss any details, adding that "keeping secret is part of the recipe."

He said that he expected the price of e-fuels to come down as they are developed in coming years. "They are a new technology, and like for all new technologies they have time to become cheaper," he said.

Ferrari plans for fully electric and hybrid models to make up 80 percent of models in its range by 2030 while 20 percent will still be powered by internal combustion engines.

"This does not change," Vigna said. "We don't want to tell clients which car to use. We want to make three kinds of propulsion available for them -- hybrid, electric and ICE -- and they will choose."

Vigna reassured investors that the company's investment plans would not be affected by combustion engines getting an extended life, because Ferrari had already "embedded" this scenario in its business plan.

"The figure I gave (last year) -- 4.4 billion euros ($4.7 billion) for capex in the 2022-2026 period -- it's enough for us to go ahead with electrification and also with ICEs which are compatible with e-fuels," he said.

The European Union and Germany reached an agreement on Friday allowing new cars powered by combustion engines to be sold beyond the 2035 deadline if they run on carbon-neutral e-fuels. Germany's transport ministry had for weeks blocked the EU's plan, demanding an exemption for cars that use e-fuels.

VW: e-fuels are 'useful'

Volkswagen Group said the e-fuels deal will help low-volume models such as the Porsche 911 sports car. "We see e-fuels as a useful addition to the existing fleet of combustion engines and for special applications," said VW, which counts Porsche among its brands.

"E-fuels from renewable energies are a contribution to sustainable mobility — the agreement gives manufacturers and above all consumers a clear perspective for planning," the automaker said.

VW added that it remains committed to the electrification of its lineup with a goal of EVs accounting for around 10 percent of sales this year and more than half at the end of the decade.

VW’s efforts on synthetic fuels are led by Porsche, which does not plan to make an electric 911. Porsche has invested in an e-fuel plant in Chile

VW Group and Porsche CEO Oliver Blume was criticized last year after saying at an internal event that he successfully lobbied for e-fuels to be included in the new German government’s coalition agreement

The deal between the EU and Germany deal is expected to change little when it comes to automakers' long-term plans to sell only battery-electric cars in Europe by 2035, aside from the most high-end vehicles.
