PARIS -- Stellantis will invest 300 million euros in its factory in Kenitra, Morocco, to build a new range of small cars on the “Smart Car” platform as well as increase production of electric quadricycles for Citroen and Opel.

Capacity at the Kenitra plant, which opened in 2019, will be doubled to 400,000 cars, along with 50,000 quadricycles including the Citroen Ami and Opel Rocks-e. A Fiat version potentially called Topolino will reportedly join those two models.

The factory, which was built with an initial investment of 557 million euros, currently builds the Peugeot 208 small car for the regional and European markets. The 208 is also built at Trnava, Slovakia.

The Smart Car line for emerging and developing countries debuted this year with the Citroen New C3 built in India. A three-vehicle lineup is planned. The cars share many components with Stellantis vehicles built on the CMP architecture, including the Peugeot 208.

Stellantis officials said Wednesday that Smart Car vehicles will eventually make up 40 percent of sales in the North Africa and Middle East region.

Citroen launched the Ami in France in April 2020, with Italian sales following in December. Registrations in 2020 were 2,719, mainly in France, according to Citroen.

Last year, after adding Spain, Belgium and Portugal, registrations of the Ami grew to 9,183 units. Citroen added new markets for the model this year, including the UK, Germany and Morocco.

Opel launched the Rocks-e at the end of last year.

Citroen said earlier this year that production would be increased to 20,000 from 18,000 units. Supplier sources told Automotive News Europe in April that production will increase to about 35,000 to 40,000 units from 2023 including the Topolino. Stellantis has not commented about a potential Fiat version.

Stellantis says it will have a production capacity in the region of 1 million vehicles by 2030.

Other automakers and suppliers have set up shop in Morocco, taking advantage of low wages compared to Europe and generous incentives from the government, as well as easy access to major ports. Renault has two factories in the country -- one in Tangiers with an annual capacity of 400,000 vehicles and one in Casablanca that builds around 85,000 vehicles a year.

"Stellantis’ global ambition will benefit from the strong development pace of the Middle East and Africa region that aims at contributing to creating a third engine for Stellantis, in addition to North America and Europe," Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said in a news release Wednesday.

Stellantis to source chips for EVs from Infineon

Stellantis plans to buy more than $1 billion worth of chips from Infineon as its brands in Europe, including Peugeot, Fiat, Opel and Alfa Romeo, become all-electric marques.

Reuters

BERLIN -- Stellantis has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with German chipmaker Infineon for a multi-year supply of silicon carbide semiconductors.

Infineon will reserve production capacity and will supply the power semiconductors directly to Stellantis suppliers in the second half of the decade.

Well over 1 billion euros' ($1.03 billion) worth of chips could be involved, Infineon said in a statement on Monday.

The chips would be meant for electric vehicles under the Stellantis brands, Infineon said.

Stellantis plans to convert its brands in Europe including Peugeot, Fiat, Opel and Alfa Romeo into all-electric marques by the end of the decade, ahead of the European Union's plan to effectively ban internal combustion engines by 2035 by requiring all new cars sold from then to produce zero emissions.

Chip shortages over the past couple of years have forced global automakers to cut back on production.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares told French newspaper Le Parisien last month he expects the semiconductor supply chain to remain tight until the end of next year.

MILAN -- Stellantis has agreed to buy aiMotive, a developer of advanced artificial intelligence and autonomous driving software, to advance its technology development efforts, the company said in a statement.

No financial details of the transaction have been disclosed.

The acquisition enhances Stellantis' artificial intelligence and autonomous driving core technology, expands its global talent pool, and boosts the mid-term development of its all-new STLA AutoDrive platform, the company added in the statement.

The deal also supports Stellantis' ambition to generate around 20 billion euros ($20.75 billion) in additional annual revenues by 2030 from software-enabled product offerings and subscriptions.

Budapest-based aiMotive has offices in Germany, the U.S. and Japan and employs over 200 employees worldwide, including engineers with advanced artificial intelligence and autonomous driving expertise.

The startup will operate as a subsidiary of Stellantis, maintaining its operational independence and culture. Founder László Kishonti will remain as CEO. Kishonti is a 2019 Automotive News Europe Rising Star.

The startup will continue selling three areas of its current technology product portfolio, including aiData, aiSim and aiWare, to other partners, the statement said.

Peugeot SUVs are stuck at French plant on logistics troubles

Vehicle inventory has ballooned this year amid freight problems, with the issues most serious in Europe.

Stellantis has thousands of cars stuck at its Sochaux plant in eastern France as logistics problems that impacted the maker of Peugeot 3008 SUVs last quarter persist.

"There are big problems to deliver new vehicles," said Jerome Boussard, a CGT labor union representative at the factory.

"We had about 4,000 of them stuck in our parking lots and even outside the site as of noon yesterday," he said on Tuesday.

Stellantis confirmed the logistics issues without elaborating on the number of vehicles awaiting pickup as the figures vary all the time, according to a spokeswoman.

Freight problems are impacting the entire automotive industry and Stellantis is working non-stop to solve them, the spokesperson said.

Vehicle inventory at Stellantis has ballooned this year, going up by 179,000 units to 275,000 units with the issues most serious in Europe.

Earlier this month, Chief Financial Officer Richard Palmer said "outbound logistics challenges due to railcar, truck and driver shortages as well as ship availability" were to blame, adding the company expected the problems to ease during the fourth quarter.

The problems extend to other automakers too with Tesla producing over 22,000 more cars than it delivered last quarter, and warning of another gap between how many vehicles it makes and how many it can get to customers in the current quarter.

Tesla is battling availability of ships from Shanghai to Europe, and local trucking within certain parts of the U.S. and Europe, Chief Financial Officer Zachary Kirkhorn said last month.

Creative solutions

As the issues persist, Stellantis is getting creative to get cars to customers. Dealers, for example, are allowed to come and pick up the vehicles themselves, the spokeswoman said.

Sochaux is particularly impacted as a distribution hub for finished cars from a number of plants.

Production of Peugeot 3008 and Peugeot 5008 SUVs is continuing, the labor union representative said. The glut of finished cars has filled up all available room on site, and vehicles have to be moved to additional spaces as far away as 50 km (31 miles), he said.

The factory produces about 1,100 vehicles each day.
