Peugeot to debut Inception concept at CES in 2023

Peugeot will reveal the full-electric Inception concept at CES in Las Vegas in January 2023.

PARIS -- Peugeot will reveal its Inception concept vehicle, which will hint at the Stellantis brand’s future design direction, at CES in Las Vegas on Jan. 5.

The concept “will give a taste of the next generation of models,” Peugeot said in a news release. The brand’s future models will be headlined by the next-generation 3008 compact SUV, which will be revealed next year.

Peugeot did not offer any images of the Inception. It said the concept would show how Peugeot is “taking advantage of ‘BEV-by-design’ next-generation electric platforms.” Those platforms include STLA Small, STLA Medium and STLA Large, with the first vehicles on the architecture expected to debut in early 2024.

Peugeot will become a full-electric only brand in Europe by 2030.

The Inception will be presented in Las Vegas by CEO Linda Jackson and design chief Matthias Hossann, former head of Peugeot’s concept cars. It was not displayed at the Paris auto show in October, where Peugeot’s offerings were led by the new 408 compact fastback.

Peugeot's last major concept vehicle was the E-Legend, a full-electric coupe shown in 2018 that evoked the 504 Coupe from the 1970s.

Even though the Inception will be revealed in the U.S., Peugeot has not said it will re-enter the North American market, which it left in the early 1990s.

Under PSA Group, which merged with Fiat Chrysler in 2021 to form Stellantis, the brand was to return to the U.S. by the mid-2020s in an effort to expand PSA’s reach beyond Europe. But that plan was superseded by the merger, which brought the U.S.-based Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram brands to the combined group.

Stellantis starts European dealer network shake-up

As part of its efforts to cut costs and support investment for electrification, Stellantis will move toward an agency sales model.

Stellantis said it would reorganize its European dealers' network in July next year, starting in Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

"The rest of Europe will progressively follow in the implementation of the new distribution scheme," Stellantis said on Thursday.

As part of its efforts to cut costs and support investment for electrification, Stellantis last year said it would end all current sales and services contracts with European dealers for all of its 14 brands, from June 2023.

The plan is to move toward an "agency model" in which carmakers take more control of sales transactions and prices while dealers focus on deliveries and servicing, no longer acting as the customer's contractual partner.

Uwe Hochgeschurtz, Stellantis' chief operating officer for Europe, said the group aimed to promote a "sustainable" distribution model and all stakeholders would benefit.

Stellantis said it ran a comparative economic simulation showing that, under the new planned distribution model, dealers would enjoy "at least equivalent profitability" and reduced exposure to risks.

A spokesman for the company said Stellantis' light commercial vehicle brands would enter the new distribution structure from Jan. 1, 2024.

MILAN -- Stellantis has agreed to buy aiMotive, a developer of advanced artificial intelligence and autonomous driving software, to advance its technology development efforts, the company said in a statement.

No financial details of the transaction have been disclosed.

The acquisition enhances Stellantis' artificial intelligence and autonomous driving core technology, expands its global talent pool, and boosts the mid-term development of its all-new STLA AutoDrive platform, the company added in the statement.

The deal also supports Stellantis' ambition to generate around 20 billion euros ($20.75 billion) in additional annual revenues by 2030 from software-enabled product offerings and subscriptions.

Budapest-based aiMotive has offices in Germany, the U.S. and Japan and employs over 200 employees worldwide, including engineers with advanced artificial intelligence and autonomous driving expertise.

The startup will operate as a subsidiary of Stellantis, maintaining its operational independence and culture. Founder László Kishonti will remain as CEO. Kishonti is a 2019 Automotive News Europe Rising Star.

The startup will continue selling three areas of its current technology product portfolio, including aiData, aiSim and aiWare, to other partners, the statement said.
