Today, BYD has produced the 3 millionth NEV, challenging Tesla. It has appeared to be the BYD Seal sporty electric sedan. BYD mentioned that it has taken only a half of the year to produce 1 million NEVs. Let’s get acquainted with the BYD’s important milestone.

We will remind you that NEV is a term widely used in China. In simple words, it comprises three types of vehicles: BEVs, PHEVs, and EREVs (range-extender). Worth highlighting that HEVs and MHEVs don’t belong to NEVs. In China, BYD is the standout performer in terms of NEV production and sales volume. At the beginning of 2022, BYD even stopped producing ICE vehicles, focusing on BEVs and PHEVs only. A lot of local analysts suggested this move will allow BYD to grow its NEV market share.

BYD 3 Millionth NEV Milestone

As mentioned, on November 16, BYD has produced the 3 millionth NEV. It appeared to be the Seal sporty sedan. Worth mentioning that its owner is Wang Shuang, a famous Chinese female football player. What is it: a coincidence or the company’s PR-move? Only BYD knows.

By the way, BYD reported that it took 13 years for it to produce its first million of new energy vehicles. In May 2022, BYD’s 2 millionth NEV rolled off the production line in China. And it has taken only a half of a year to produce the 3 millionth one. This statistics clearly show how fast BYD has been developing last few years.

We will also mention that in October BYD has managed to sell 217,518 NEVs with a year-on-year increase of 142.2%. 9,529 of them were exported. Among all the sold NEVs, 114,361 units were PHEVs while 103,157 units were BEV. Cumulative sales of BYD overcame 2.9 million NEVs.

We thought that BYD will share some details on their new high-end SUV brand called Yangwang. Instead, BYD has announced a new brand in a price segment between 400,000 and 600,000 RMB (56,450 – 84,650 USD). They have promised to tell us more about the new brand in 2023. We will surely keep an eye on it.

BYD’s relentless advance to dominate the world’s biggest electric-vehicle market has not been hampered by COVID-19 lockdowns, supply chain woes or power shortages.

Now, the Chinese brand has Elon Musk’s Tesla in its sights.

The automaker will enter 2023 on a roll, with record vehicle sales, revenue and profitability, driven by the appeal of its affordable cars in China’s mass market.

BYD is now making a play for richer buyers in the premium end of the market with two luxury brands, pitting itself against Tesla’s pricier cars.

“The two segments BYD does not have exposure to are the luxury SUV and sports car markets, which we expect BYD will expand into in 2023,” says Bridget McCarthy, head of China operations for green tech-focused U.S. hedge fund Snow Bull Capital.

“These are the two most profitable vehicle segments, so bottom-line growth in 2023 will excite investors.”

The first of the two new brands, Yangwang, will launch in the first quarter, targeting affluent professionals with promises of high performance and disruptive technologies.

More intriguingly, BYD also is touting a new brand that it says will be “grounded in highly professional and personalized identities” to cater to the “diversified demands” of customers.

It’s said little more about the brand beyond that.

After ceasing production of combustion engine-only cars earlier this year, BYD “has now established itself unequivocally as the market leader in the race to electrification, and I believe it will parlay that into a multi-brand strategy,” says Bill Russo, founder and CEO of Shanghai-based advisory firm Automobility. “They will be a pioneer if they do.”

The new brands also happen to be the kind of EVs fit for the U.S., a market BYD has yet to enter with its ever-growing electric lineup.

Russo also expects the hardware-driven BYD to embrace software in a big way, as it’s an area seen as a shortcoming.

“What BYD lacks that others have is more of a digital DNA,” he says. “BYD is still a hardware company. As good as it is assembling an EV profitably at scale, it has not proven itself to be a tech-driven software-defined technology company.”

The Chinese EV giant has managed to withstand most production disruptions, in part thanks to its vertically integrated supply chain. Production and deliveries hit another record in November, topping 230,000 vehicles.

The rise and rise of BYD puts it on course to match and maybe even exceed Tesla in pure EV car sales by the first quarter of next year.

With critics pointing to BYD’s lower levels of revenue and profitability versus Tesla, the Shenzhen-based juggernaut may close that gap with by broadening its lineup with more top-end vehicles.

“Can the Chinese in a hypercompetitive market establish a sustainable premium price position with Chinese consumers?” asks Russo. “It has not been done sustainably.”

BYD will offer the pickup truck in EV and PHEV versions, with either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The PHEV will get BYD’s new DM-i hybrid technology. This is a plug-in hybrid system combining a 1.5 turbo petrol engine with one or two electric motors. Power output ranges from 180 to over 500 hp.
