BYD aims to get half of sales from global markets
BYD is investing billions of dollars on production facilities in Europe, Asia and South America to serve local markets and skirt trade barriers being thrown up against Chinese EVs.

China’s top-selling automaker BYD expects overseas deliveries to account for almost half of total sales in the future, suggesting it will continue to set up global production hubs to overcome punishing tariffs.

“Our overseas market will account for a relatively large proportion of our global sales in the future,” Executive Vice President Stella Li in an interview at the company’s Shenzhen headquarters.

Asked to be more specific, she said “nearly half” of sales will come from overseas.

While Li did not give a specific time frame for the global sales goal, it would require a huge increase in production and deliveries.

BYD is on track to hit 500,000 overseas sales this year, having reached 270,000 in the first seven months — accounting for around 14 percent of its overall total. BYD’s overall target is to sell approximately 3.6 million full- electric and plug-in hybrid cars in 2024, mostly in its home market.

To achieve the global goal, BYD is investing billions of dollars on production facilities in Europe, Asia and South America to serve local markets and skirt trade barriers being thrown up against Chinese electric vehicles.

The European Union earlier this month imposed an additional 17 percent duty on BYD cars, while Canada and the U.S. have both slapped 100 percent levies on Chinese EVs, accusing China of cheating on trade by subsidizing its auto industry.

BYD has a factory up and running in Thailand, and more manufacturing capacity being built in Hungary, Brazil and Turkey.

It has committed to build a plant in Indonesia and is poised to sign a production deal in Mexico.

To build its brand awareness outside China, it last month signed a deal with Uber to put 100,000 EVs onto the ride-hailing company’s platform and was one of the major sponsors of the Euro 2024 and Copa America soccer tournaments.

The international push will likely feature in a robust financial report — and rising first-half net income — that BYD will release later on Aug. 28.

The 50 percent global sales goal probably will not be achieved until the end of the decade, according to Bloomberg Intelligence China auto analyst Joanna Chen.

“That 50 percent mix is at least a 2030 story, or even later,” Chen said. “Among Chinese OEMs, Chery Auto’s current mix is roughly half export and half domestic. It was the earliest to go overseas and is now the largest Chinese OEM in terms of exports. Others still depend heavily on the domestic market.”

BYD has been selling well in countries like Brazil, Israel, Thailand and Australia, but European drivers remain less enthused about buying an EV, reflecting the broader trouble for legacy and new players across the continent. BYD has also become the dominant force in its home market, overtaking established western automakers like Volkswagen Group to sell 3 million units last year.

Data centers

BYD is also setting up its own data centers in individual European countries as it expands its autonomous and internet-connected cars, Li said.

The data collected will not be sent to China, she said, heading off data security concerns, something the U.S. is seeking to tackle.

Efforts to keep customer data safe mirrors a commitment by rival EV maker Xpeng to set up large-scale data centers in Europe to cope with software data collection in its intelligent-driving cars.

BYD hires Fiat Chrysler's former Europe boss as special adviser
Alfredo Altavilla, who was COO of Fiat Chrysler for Europe from 2012-18, will help the Chinese automaker expand in the region.

BYD has hired Alfredo Altavilla, a former head of Europe at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, as a special adviser for the European market, as the Chinese automaker seeks to expand its presence in Europe.

BYD is a rival to Tesla as the world’s largest maker of full-electric cars. It is making a major push into Europe, with a growing lineup of EVs and plans to build factories in Hungary and Turkey.

New EU tariffs on Chinese-built EVs have complicated BYD’s plans, however, as has the slowdown in electric-car sales. The European factories would allow the automaker to avoid the levies, which would add 17 percent to an existing 10 percent tariff.

BYD is also adding a plug-in hybrid powertrain to the Seal U SUV, which would not be subject to the EV tariff.

BYD’s European sales have grown quickly in the past two years; in July, the brand ranked 30th in Europe, up 18 spots from July 2023. This year, sales are up by 331 percent, to 21,261 from 4,929 in 2023. It is the second-largest Chinese brand in Europe, but far behind the leader, MG, which sold more than 148,000 cars through July.

BYD has ambitious plans for Europe. Earlier this year, Europe CEO Michael Shu said in an interview with Automotive News Europe that it was seeking a 5 percent share of the EV market in Europe ahead of the launch of the factory in Hungary. That would translate to about 70,000 annual EV sales.

Altavilla will be a key part of that push, Stella Li, BYD executive vice president, said in a release on Aug. 30.

"The addition of Alfredo Altavilla to the European team is a key step in our strategy to strengthen and consolidate BYD's presence in this important market," she said.

Altavilla starts in his new role Sept. 2.

Altavilla, a native of Taranto, Italy, held various management positions at Fiat. These included CEO of truck maker Iveco, responsibility for Fiat's cooperation with General Motors, and CEO of the Tofas Turkish joint venture. In 2012, he became chief operating officer for the Europe, Africa and the Middle East (EMEA) region, and was a top aide to Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne.

Following Marchionne’s death in 2018, Altavilla left the automaker after Jeep and Ram CEO Mike Manley was named as head of FCA. Manley played a key role in Fiat's Chrysler's merger with PSA Group to create Stellantis.

After leaving Fiat Chrysler, Altavilla held a variety of board and advisory positions, including as a director at Telecom Italia. In 2021 he was appointed by the government as executive chairman of ITA Airways,  the successor to financially troubled Alitalia.

His current positions include senior adviser at CVC Capital Partners in Europe, and seats on the boards of directors at Enerpac Tool Group, MSX, Ambienta SGR and Proma Group. In addition, he is part of the investment committee of Vasuky, a Tech VC fund sponsored by Rothschild & Co.

BYD sets higher annual sales target, brokerage report shows
The goal would put BYD almost at par with Ford, which ranked sixth by global sales in 2023 with 4.4 million vehicles sold.

BEIJING — Chinese electric automaker BYD aims to sell 4 million vehicles this year, Morgan Stanley said in a report, suggesting an 11 percent upward revision to the company's 2024 sales target set earlier this year.

The goal would put BYD almost at par with Ford Motor, which ranked sixth by global sales in 2023 with 4.4 million vehicles sold.

BYD attributed the extra sales growth to this year's introduction of new models with its latest plug-in hybrid technology known as DM-i 5.0, which would also contribute a better margin, Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in a report dated Sept. 9, citing comments by BYD executives at a road show event.

The order backlog of such models including Qin L and Seal 06 DM-i, both priced from 99,800 yuan ($14,019), has exceeded BYD's production capacity, the report said, adding that BYD showed no intention to hike prices the rest of the year.

BYD launched the fifth-generation DM-i 5.0 plug-in hybrid technology in May, which improves fuel and cost savings. The world's second-largest EV vendor after U.S. rival Tesla touted a record low fuel consumption of 2.9 litres per 100 km (62.1 miles) on depleted batteries with the technology.

It still dominates the segment of EV models priced between 100,000 yuan and 150,000, and the BYD executives expected limited competition from peers such as Xpeng's Mona M03, which is priced from $17,000, according to the report.

The higher sales target implies that BYD, which had its best ever month in August with 373,083 auto sales, would sell around 418,000 vehicles per month in the fourth quarter.

Of that, more than 11 percent would be sold overseas as the company aims to double exports to 450,000 vehicles this year.

BYD set a 3.6-million-vehicle sales target for 2024, a jump of 20 percent from its record-breaking sales last year, Reuters reported in March.

The company improved net profit in the second quarter, even though it led a protracted price war with aggressive discounts on its best-selling models.

Under pressure to catch up with rivals in smart driving features, BYD has ramped up its efforts of in-house development of such technologies. The company uses Momenta's system in its Denza cars and Huawei's technology in the Fangchengbao Bao 8 crossover.
