Il colosso cinese Geely costruirà la sua costellazione satellitare per la navigazione

Il 18 febbraio 2021, il colosso automobilistico cinese Geely ha annunciato di aver ricevuto i permessi per la costruzione di una rete satellitare in orbita bassa terrestre. Geely prevede di iniziare la produzione dei satelliti nell’impianto di Taizhou, nella provincia di Zhejiang, entro ottobre 2021. Qui l’obbiettivo è di avere una capacità di produzione di oltre 500 satelliti all’anno (dal 2025). Ad oggi, il colosso automobilistico afferma di poter lanciare i primi satelliti della propria costellazione entro la prima metà del 2021.

In base a quanto dichiarato dall’azienda, lo scopo di tale costellazione sarà il supporto ai veicoli della casa automobilistica, in particolare nella navigazione. L’obbiettivo è raggiungere una precisione dell’ordine dei centimetri in modo da permettere un nuovo livello di guida autonoma. La necessità di Geely nasce dal fatto che tutti i sitemi di navigazione con servizio pubblico (GPS, Beidou e Galileo) raggiungono una precisione solo nell’ordine dei metri. Oltre alla navigazione, i satelliti di Geely saranno utilizzati per le comunicazioni tra diversi veicoli (V2V) ed in generale in tutte le trasmissioni del veicolo verso altri sistemi (Vehicle-to X-(V2X)). Targeting Tesla, Geely to launch new premium EV brand, report says

Chairman Li Shufu's ambition is to make premium cars "like Mercedes-Benz"

 

BEIJING -- China's Geely plans to roll out electric vehicles under a new marque with different branding and sales strategies, people familiar with the matter said, as the Volvo owner looks to take on its main EV rival Tesla with higher-end vehicles.

The brand, positioned in the premium segment and named "Zeekr," will be housed under Geely's to-be-launched EV entity Lingling Technologies, according to three people, who declined to be named as the plan is not yet public. Reuters reported the plans for Lingling last month.

Geely, the owner of Volvo Cars and 9.7 percent of Daimler, will roll out models under the new marque based on its open-source EV chassis, announced in September and called Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), the sources said.

It will be a new attempt to go up-market by Geely, and backs founder and Chairman Li Shufu's long-held ambition to make premium cars "like Mercedes-Benz" in a bid take on EV leader Tesla.

Geely will open showrooms, or "hubs," in city centers to sell cars at a fixed price, departing from traditions to sell cars through dealerships - marketing tactics pioneered by Tesla, which last year saw sales expand quickly in China, the world's biggest car market.

The plan follows a flurry of tie-ups by Geely earlier this year as the automaker pursues its goal of becoming a leading EV contract manufacturer and engineering service provider.

"Traditional gasoline cars and electric vehicles are two race tracks of business. Geely does not have a clear advantage in electric vehicles at the moment so it appears that it wants to complete its own innovation by creating a new brand," said Alan Kang, analyst at auto consultancy LMC Automotive.

China's automakers largely compete with entry-level and mass-market manufacturers including Volkswagen and Toyota, but EV maker Nio sells cars with higher prices and counts BMW as a rival.

Hangzhou-based Geely also plans a broad array of sales and marketing strategies to seek deeper relationships with the EV buyers. It will open lifestyle lines for clothing and accessories and launch a car owner's club, tactics used by Nio, sources said.

Zeekr is also considering rolling out a share ownership plan that allows customers to become shareholders of Lingling, which management hopes will boost sales and the relationship between brand and customers.

Geely declined to comment.

Many conventional automakers have used a new brand to launch their EV units. Geely's rivals including Great Wall, and SAIC Motor have rolled out their respective new standalone EV brands.

China's government has heavily promoted new energy vehicles (NEVs) - such as battery-powered, plug-in gasoline-electric hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell cars - in response to chronic air pollution and a warming climate, spurring interest from technology companies and investors alike.

China forecasts NEVs will make up 20 percent of its annual auto sales by 2025 from around 5 percent in 2020.

Cioè un altro brand ancora per andare contro Tesla? Ma non potevano utilizzare Polestar?

Geely ha sempre fatto cosí, crea mille marchi e poi li affossa: Shanghai Maple, Englon, Emgrand, Kandi, ecc ecc tutti affossati, ora ha creato Geometry e Maple due brand elettrici che vendono le versioni elettriche delle Geely a sua volta vendute anche a marchio Geely 😂😂😂😂

..si molto strano, hanno anche Lynk&Co gia in roll out in Europa...

ora ha creato Geometry e Maple due brand elettrici che vendono le versioni elettriche delle Geely a sua volta vendute anche a marchio Geely 😂😂😂😂 

 

si..ma questi due marche sono piu segmento generalista, forse con Zeekr Shufu intende di creare una marca pure electric premium come Xpeng e Nio. Tutti i due con la P7 e la ET7 abbastanza con successo contro Tesla3.

Geely confirms new EV brand; says 2020 profit fell 32%

 

China's Geely Automobile Holdings on Tuesday announced a joint venture with its parent group for electric vehicles and a new brand called Zeekr.

The company also said 2020 net profit fell 32 percent to 5.53 billion yuan ($849.54 million), as auto sales in the world's biggest market were hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Geely is the highest-profile Chinese automaker in the world due to its investments in Volvo Cars and Daimler.

The automaker sold 1.32 million cars last year, down from 1.36 million units in 2019. It expects to sell 1.53 million cars this year.

Overall auto sales in China fell 1.9 percent to 25.3 million vehicles in 2020, according to industry data.

Geely Automobile and its parent, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, will invest $5 billion in a new electric-car battery plant, and launching Zeekr.

The first Zeekr vehicles are expected to be delivered in the third quarter of 2021, Geely said in a statement.

Geely sold about 68,000 new energy vehicles last year, or around 5 percent of its total. That is well short of a goal set in 2015 to have 90 percent of sales consist of EVs by 2020. Rival BYD by contrast got 44 percent of its sales from EVs last year.

Its announcement confirms reports earlier this month that Geely Chairman Li Shufu was planning a new electric-car brand in a bid take on EV leader Tesla.

Other automakers have used a new brand to launch their EV units. Geely's rivals including Great Wall, and SAIC Motor have rolled out new standalone EV brands.

Geely Holding also aims to become a leading EV contract manufacturer and engineering service provider.

Geely Automobile and Volvo Cars last month abandoned their merger plans but launched a new entity to combine their powertrain operations and expand cooperation on electric vehicles.
