BMW model upgrade measures for the summer of 2021.

26.05.2021 Press Release

Extension of drive portfolio for the new BMW 4 Series Coupe and the new BMW 4 Series Convertible – New exterior colours and seat surfaces for models of the BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series – Lane Departure Warning with optimised functionality – 4-zone automatic climate control including nanoparticle filter now also for the BMW 5 Series Sedan, the BMW 5 Series Touring, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo and the BMW M5 – FSC-certified, sustainable natural rubber tyres for the BMW X5 xDrive45e.

Munich. Starting in the summer of 2021, new drive variants, special equipment features and additional exterior and interior design options will enhance driving pleasure, comfort and the individual character of a large number of BMW models. From July 2021, there will be a choice of three new model variants of the new BMW 4 Series Coupe, and a straight six-cylinder diesel engine is now also available for the BMW 4 Series Convertible. Furthermore, additional exterior colours and seat surfaces will be on offer for models of the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series.

Moreover, as from the summer of 2021, new exterior colours will also be available for the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. In addition, a number of models will feature an upgraded version of the Lane Departure Warning with additional functions. Optional 4-zone automatic climate control will in future also include a nanoparticle filter for the BMW 5 Series, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo and the BMW M5 model variants. The plug-in hybrid models of the BMW 5 Series Touring can now also be fitted with 19-inch light alloy wheels and – like the electrified versions of the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 5 Series Sedan, the BMW 7 Series and the BMW X5 – will feature new exterior and interior design accents.

BMW 4 Series Coupe: New four-wheel drive models and a BMW M automobile with classic rear-wheel drive.

From July 2021, the BMW 4 Series model range will be complemented by two additional four-wheel drive variants – the new BMW 430i xDrive Coupe (combined fuel consumption: 7.7 – 6.9 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO2 emissions: 176 – 157 g/km according to WLTP) and the new BMW 420i xDrive Coupe (combined fuel consumption: 7.5 – 6.6 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO2 emissions: 170 – 151 g/km according to WLTP). This means that the two four-cylinder petrol-driven models can now transfer drive torque to the road assisted by intelligent four-wheel drive technology. Power distribution is available on demand in any situation and is combined with rear-wheel orientation of the system, guaranteeing a classic form of driving pleasure. With a maximum power output of 180 kW/245 hp, the BMW 430i xDrive Coupe accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. For the BMW 420i xDrive Coupe with 135 kW/184 hp this figure is 7.8 seconds. Both models are equipped as standard with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission.

At the top of the BMW 4 Series Coupe model range the trend will go in the opposite direction for the additional variants. Up till now, intelligent four-wheel drive was standard on these models, but in future the BMW M440i Coupe (combined fuel consumption: 8.1 – 7.4 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO2 emissions: 184 – 167 g/km according to WLTP) will be available with classic rear-wheel drive. Under the bonnet of the new version of the BMW M automobile, the 275 kW/374 kW straight six-cylinder petrol power plant guarantees exceptionally puristic driving pleasure. The car takes a mere 4.8 seconds to sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h. Furthermore, in the case of the BMW M440i Coupe, an 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission and an M Sport differential on the rear axle assist with the transfer of motive power to the road.

Premiere for the BMW 430d Convertible, new exterior colours and seat surfaces for the BMW 3 Series and the BMW 4 Series.

From July 2021, a new engine variant will be added to the drive portfolio for the new BMW 4 Series Convertible. The new straight six-cylinder diesel engine for the BMW 430d Convertible (combined fuel consumption: 6.0 – 5.3 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO2 emissions: 156 – 139 g/km according to WLTP) mobilises a maximum output of 210 kW/286 hp and a peak torque of 650 Nm. Pulling power and efficiency of the drive system are enhanced thanks to two-stage turbo charging and mild hybrid technology with a 48-volt starter generator. The new BMW 430d Convertible accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds.

The choice of exterior colours is being extended both for the new BMW 4 Series Coupe and the BMW 4 Series Convertible. New to the range are the BMW Individual colour Aventurin Red metallic and the variant M Brooklyn Grey metallic, both of which are available in conjunction with the model M Sport and the BMW M automobiles of the BMW 4 Series. As a new optional feature for the interior of the BMW 4 Series Coupe, seat surfaces in perforated Sensatec can be ordered. These are available with a choice of four colours.

From July 2021, these upholstery variants will also be available for the BMW 3 Series Sedan and the BMW 3 Series Touring in conjunction with the optional sports seats. Likewise, the BMW Individual colour Aventurin Red metallic is also on offer for models of the BMW 3 Series.

BMW 1 Series and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe: Upgraded storage package, new colours.

The new cargo function, which forms a part of the optional storage package for the BMW 1 Series, will ensure greater luggage compartment variability as from July 2021. With this function, the angle of the rear seat backs can be adjusted as desired. Even in the most upright position, sitting comfort is ensured in the second row, at least over short distances, whilst luggage compartment volume is simultaneously increased by around 40 litres. Moreover, the storage package for the BMW 1 Series will in future also comprise a stowage net on the right of the luggage compartment.

In addition, a new exterior colour will be on offer for the BMW 1 Series. In future, the compact five-door car will also be available in the colour variant Snapper Rocks Blue metallic. Two new exterior finishes will supplement the choice of colours for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe: Phytonic Blue metallic and Skyscraper Grey metallic.

Lane Departure Warning with optimised functionality on narrow lanes.

Starting in July 2021, the driver assistance system Lane Departure Warning will contribute more than ever towards an increase in comfort and safety in many BMW models thanks to a functionality that is even more precisely aligned to each driving situation.  At speeds exceeding 70 km/h, the camera-based system helps the driver avoid unintentional lane change. In respective situations, the driver is warned by means of steering wheel vibration. Furthermore, a steering impulse helps the driver direct the vehicle back into the correct lane position. In future, on narrow country roads with a lane width of less than 2.60 metres and without a central lane marking, this steering impulse will be overriden. In the case of oncoming traffic, use of the outer edge of the lane will then be possible without any loss in comfort.

The latest version of the Lane Departure Warning feature is available for all model variants of the BMW 3 Series, BMW 4 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 6 Series, BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series as well as the BMW X5, the BMW X6, the BMW X7, the BMW M3, the BMW M4, the BMW M5 and the BMW M8. These models are all equipped as standard with this system.

New for the BMW 5 Series, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo and the BMW M5: 4-zone-automatic climate control with nanoparticle filter.

The optional 4-zone automatic climate control feature facilitates separate control of temperature and ventilation rate for both the driver and front passenger as well as for the right and left rear compartment areas. The latest version now also comprises a nanoparticle filter, which ensures further enhanced interior air quality using nano-fleece and active carbon layers. Nanofibre filter technology is also active when using the auxiliary ventilation function. Consequently, it is possible to purify the air inside the car quickly and thoroughly before starting off on a journey.

The 4-zone automatic climate control with nanoparticle filter is a standard feature for the BMW X7 and is already offered as an option for BMW 7 Series luxury sedans, BMW 8 Series luxury sports cars and for the models BMW X5, BMW X6, BMW X5 M, BMW X6 M and BMW M8. From July, it will also be available for all BMW 5 Series, BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo and BMW M5 model variants.

Plug-in hybrid models with new design accents.

In an ever-growing number of BMW models, precisely controlled interaction between a combustion engine and an electric motor ensures exemplary efficiency and a special form of driving pleasure. As from July 2021, plug-in hybrid models of the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 7 Series and BMW X5 will be recognisable by their fresh exterior and interior design accents. New lettering on the tailgate and on the opposite front sidewall indicates that the vehicle is “electrified by i”. Moreover, the BMW emblems on the bonnet, the tailgate, wheel hubs and steering wheel feature a BMW i Blue surround.

The choice of light alloy wheels available for electrified model variants of the BMW 5 Series Touring offer new possibilities for individualisation. The three plug-in hybrid models come fitted with 18-inch light alloys as standard. Starting in July 2021, customers can opt for 19-inch alloys in five different variants.

Sustainably produced tyres for BMW X5 plug-in hybrid models: BMW Group first automobile manufacturer to use new Pirelli tyres made from FSC-certified natural rubber.

The BMW Group reinforces its commitment in the field of sustainability. BMW is the world’s first carmaker to equip a model with tyres made from sustainably cultivated, certified natural rubber and Rayon, a wood-based tyre reinforcement material. The company is initially purchasing the 22-inch tyres exclusively from Pirelli and, as from August 2021, will offer them as special equipment for the BMW X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid model (combined fuel consumption: 1.7 – 1.2 l/100 km according to WLTP, 2.1 – 1.6 l/100 km according to NEDC; combined power consumption: 27.7 – 24.3 kWh/100 km according to WLTP, 25.2 – 23.5 kWh/100 km according to NEDC; combined CO2 emissions: 39 – 27 g/km according to WLTP, 47 – 37 g/km according to NEDC).

Cultivation and the complex supply chain of the natural rubber and Rayon used for these tyres are certified according to the stringent standards of the independent organisation Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

New equipment options for the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo and the BMW X6.

In addition to its outstanding long-distance suitability, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo also scores with its dynamic handling qualities. The M multifunctional seats, which, from July 2021, will be added to the range of special equipment options available for the luxury model, offer both driver and front passenger the ideal place to enjoy driving comfort and sporty handling. With integrated headrests and optimised side and shoulder support, they offer the driver maximum stability during dynamic cornering. M multifunctional seats also include electrically operated adjustment of the sitting position, backrest angle, backrest width, thigh support and headrest height.

Innovations in the range of special equipment for the BMW X6 provide the interior with a striking look and sporting flair. As from the summer of 2021, the Sports Activity Coupe can also be ordered with the exterior colour Piemont Red metallic. In future, standard equipment for the BMW X6 will also include a BMW M anthracite roof liner.

As from the summer of 2021, a new visual accent will emphasise the sporting flair of the interior of the BMW X6. Standard equipment for the Sports Activity Coupe will in future also include a BMW M anthracite roof liner.

New BMW Remote Software Upgrade for 1.3 Million BMW Vehicles.

01.06.2021 Press Release

+++ Amazon Alexa available in four more countries +++ BMW Maps now also has the traditional search mask +++

Munich. Today marks the start of the rollout of the new BMW Remote Software Upgrade for 1.3 million vehicles with BMW Operating System 7. This activates Amazon Alexa integration in four more markets. The upgrade also includes improvements, such as the integration of the traditional destination entry in BMW Maps.

Amazon Alexa integration for four more countries.

The upcoming BMW Remote Software Upgrade will update the BMW Operating System 7 to Version 21-03. The rollout in Germany will start on June 1st 2021, gradually covering more BMW Connected Drive markets worldwide. In total, more than 1.3 million BMW vehicles (and more than 20 models) will be given the upgrade.

Customers can now also use many of the Alexa features in their car they know and love at home: add items to shopping lists, check the news, play music or control compatible smart home devices from the car. So far, Alexa has been available for BMW Operating System 7 vehicles in Germany, Austria, Great Britain, Spain and Italy. This upgrade adds four more countries to the list - France, the USA, Canada and Brazil.

BMW Maps developers also bring back traditional search mask.

The BMW Maps navigation system was rolled out in mid 2020 for vehicles with BMW Operating System 7. The system, cloud-based for the first time, makes route calculation significantly faster and more dynamic by combining real-time information with predictive models. The cloud also contains additional context-related information on now over 120 million points of interest, such as ratings, opening hours and images. The POI database is updated and kept up-to-date several times a week at short and regular intervals.

The easiest way to enter the destination is in natural language in dialogue with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. With BMW Maps, additional improvements in terms of ease of use via touch or BMW controller have been implemented. The One-Box Search was used for the first time, for example. This allows customers to search for the addresses and names of places, as they are used to with when entering text in web search engines. Algorithms are used to filter the applicable database to display the probable suggestions already during input (auto-completion).

Many BMW customers also want the familiar screen mask for destination entry (country, place, street, house number) back. BMW always has the aim of offering its customers the best possible customer experience. According to a decision by product management and the developers, the traditional search was redeveloped in BMW Maps and is now available to customers in addition to the one-box search.

The adaptation for BMW Maps is activated after installing the current BMW Remote Software Upgrade.

Further improvements of functions

One of the improvements provided by this upgrade is that the Lane Departure Warning settings can now be saved permanently. If customers do not wish to benefit from the lane departure warning, they can disable the function in the settings. From now on, the deactivation remains stored in the corresponding, activated BMW ID. The function is only reactivated if the customer makes the corresponding change in the settings.

Another improvement that comes with this update of the BMW Operating System corrects a display error when playing media with Android smartphones paired via Bluetooth (with Android 11). After the upgrade, the cover art is processed correctly when music tracks are changed.

In some vehicle models with BMW Operating System 7 the Surround View on the control display was not positioned correctly. This has also been corrected as part of the quality improvements.

General notes on the BMW Remote Software Upgrade and on the rollout.

With BMW Operating System 7 and BMW Remote Software Upgrade, it has been possible since 2018 for BMW drivers to keep their vehicle up-to-date with the latest software easily and quickly. The new functions can be conveniently installed in the car over the air. The installation files are prepared in the vehicle in the background. After that, even the installation of extensive upgrades will rarely take more than 20 minutes.

Due to the Corona situation - with its impact on support capacities - the rollout of the current upgrade may be delayed in individual markets.

Vehicles with BMW Operating System 7 not produced before March 2021 already have the latest software version.

Customers are informed about available Remote Software Upgrade via the My BMW App or on the control display in the vehicle. In addition, the software status can be viewed in the vehicle settings under Remote Software Upgrade and a search for available upgrades can be carried out. Remote Software Upgrade is now available for more than 20 BMW models and thus almost for the entire BMW fleet. Vehicles with software versions older than 20-07 can only install the latest version after downloading and installing the intermediate versions. Only the next possible upgrade is offered for installation in the vehicle. The customer can never install a wrong version.
