FORD EXPANDS GLOBAL TRUCK FAMILY WITH FIRST EVER RANGER PLUG-IN HYBRID; PRO POWER ONBOARD FURTHER BOOSTS OFF-GRID CAPABILITY FOR WORK AND PLAY

  • Ford will introduce plug-in hybrid technology to the mid-size truck segment with its first ever Ranger Plug-in Hybrid electric vehicle in early 2025
  • Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will offer zero-tailpipe emission driving capability in addition to the essential next-generation Ranger towing, off-road and payload attributes, and more torque than any other Ranger
  • Available Pro Power Onboard™ means customers can leave the generator at home and free up cargo space; there’s enough energy to power remote camp or worksites

DUNTON, UK, Sept. 19, 2023 – Ford will offer customers a plug-in hybrid version of its Ranger, combining electric driving capability with adventure-ready versatility and the work-ready dependability customers have come to expect from Europe’s best-selling pickup.

Production of the first ever Ranger Plug-in Hybrid starts in late 2024 with deliveries to customers in early 2025. The new model will mark a significant step forward in Ford’s plans to offer a full range of powertrain options for customers in the mid-sized pick-up truck segment.

Ranger Plug-in Hybrid customers will also benefit from the Ford Pro ecosystem of solutions – simplifying the transition to electric vehicles with charging, software and service options to help their businesses thrive.

“The Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will help customers step forward into an electrified future, with more confidence and capability than ever before, while keeping Ranger at the forefront of innovation and leadership in the mid-size pickup truck segment,” said Hans Schep, general manager, Ford Pro, Europe.

Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will deliver more torque than any other Ranger by combining a 2.3-litre Ford EcoBoost petrol engine with an electric motor and rechargeable battery system – also enabling it to be driven in pure electric mode for a targeted driving range of more than 45 kilometres.1 Pure electric drive capability opens new possibilities for business owners in growing numbers of towns and cities with low emissions zones.

The maximum braked towing capacity of the Ranger Plug-In Hybrid is a targeted 3,500 kg – the same as the rest of the Ranger line-up. 2

Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will also offer Pro Power Onboard, enabling customers to power their high-draw power tools and appliances on a worksite or remote campsite by plugging them into power outlets embedded in both the cargo bed as well as the cabin. That means noisy, bulky, heavy generators can be left at home, leaving more space in the cargo bed for other gear and equipment. 3

In addition to having on-demand electricity, Ranger Plug-in Hybrid's EV drive modes 4 will give customers more flexibility in deciding how and when to use the EV battery power.

Ranger Plug-In Hybrid also comes equipped with the Ranger’s proven four-wheel drive off-road capability, 5 selectable drive modes and advanced driver safety and driver assist features. 4

“Our customers want electrified vehicles that deliver strong performance and affordable cost of ownership without compromising what they love about their truck,” Schep said. “The Ranger Plug-in Hybrid is a best-of-both-worlds solution for work, play, and family – offering customers zero-tailpipe emission EV driving for short trips, or hybrid performance that delivers incredible off-road, payload and towing capabilities. And, with Pro Power Onboard for the first time, Ranger owners can power their work sites and campsites easily.”

1 Officially homologated driving range, fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions will be published closer to on-sale date. In accordance with the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP). A targeted range of more than 45 km can be achieved with a fully charged battery - depending on the existing series and battery configuration. The actual range may vary due to various factors (e.g. weather conditions, driving style, route profile, vehicle condition, age and condition of the lithium-ion battery).

The declared WLTP fuel/energy consumptions, CO2-emissions and electric range are determined according to the technical requirements and specifications of the European Regulations (EC) 715/2007 and (EU) 2017/1151 as last amended. The applied standard test procedures enable comparison between different vehicle types and different manufacturers. CO2 emission and fuel efficiency ranges may vary according to vehicle variants offered by individual markets.

2 Max towing varies based on cargo, vehicle configuration, accessories and number of passengers.

3 Max payload varies and is based on accessories and vehicle configuration. See label on doorjamb for carrying capacity of a specific vehicle.

4 Driver-assist features are supplemental and do not replace the driver’s attention, judgment and need to control the vehicle. It does not replace safe driving. See Owner’s Manual for details and limitations.

5 Always consult the Owner’s Manual before off-road driving, know your terrain and trail difficulty, and use appropriate safety gear.

Ford Pro Debuts Ranger PHEV Set to Revolutionise European Pickup Experience

  • Ranger Plug-In Hybrid electrifies Europe’s best-selling pickup with full Ranger towing, payload and off-road ability, plus uprated Pro Power Onboard for off-grid work and play
  • All-new powertrain delivers 690 Nm of torque – the most of any production Ranger model – as well as 279 PS, a target EV range above 45 km and a full charge in under four hours
  • Limited-run Stormtrak launch edition leads global debut with exclusive styling, premium standard specification and unique finishes. Initial deliveries expected in spring 2025

HANOVER, Germany, Sept. 16, 2024 – Ford Pro is blazing a new trail for plug-in hybrid pickups with the all-new Ranger PHEV, today debuting at IAA TRANSPORTATION.

The no-compromise new model offers full Ranger towing, payload and off-road performance with electric-only driving ability, strengthening Ford Pro’s European pickup leadership 1 and extending the comprehensive range of Ford Pro battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Up to 690 Nm of torque – the most of any production Ranger – and an EV-only driving range of over 45 km enhance the premium appeal of the latest Ranger model. Ranger PHEV also introduces Pro Power Onboard to the Ranger line-up, enabling customers to power up to 6.9 kW of tools directly from the onboard battery rather than needing a generator.

In addition to the Wildtrak and XLT series, Ford Pro is introducing the new model as a PHEV-exclusive Stormtrak launch edition.

“The all-new Ranger PHEV delivers the benefits of electrification hand-in-hand with the hard-working performance that has built Ranger a loyal fanbase in Europe. We have perfected our first PHEV pickup in Europe to be a hugely capable tool for work and off-roading, as well as a premium vehicle with the comfort, connectivity and EV-only capability for family duties,” said Hans Schep, general manager, Ford Pro, Europe.

Ranger PHEV will be produced in Silverton, South Africa, and initial customer deliveries are expected from spring 2025. The new model joins the existing diesel-powered Ranger line-up in Europe, making Ranger more suited to varying customer needs and local emissions controls.

Bringing plug-in power to pickups

The all-new PHEV powertrain 2,3 combines Ford’s 2.3-litre Ford EcoBoost petrol engine and 10‑speed automatic gearbox with a 75 kW electric motor and an 11.8 kWh (usable) battery. The resulting 690 Nm of torque is the highest of any production Ranger ever, and with 279 PS the PHEV variant produces more power 4 than a Ranger 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel. 2,5

A new Modular Hybrid Transmission integrates Ranger PHEV’s e-motor into the bellhousing to enable hybrid driving. The battery takes less than four hours to charge using a single-phase 16 amp charger 6 to deliver a targeted range of over 45 km in EV-only mode.

Ranger PHEV offers the same hard-working performance that has earned diesel- and petrol-powered Ranger legions of devoted fans around the world. Ranger PHEV operators will continue to be able to carry a payload up to one tonne, 7 tow up to 3,500 kg 8 and benefit from the off-road confidence delivered by Ranger’s latest e-4WD system, dual-range transfer box and rear differential lock. The traction battery is packaged between specially-engineered frame rails.

The e-motor allows Ranger PHEV to deliver electric driving capability, and drivers can choose when and how to use battery power using Auto EV, EV Now, EV Later or EV Charge modes. 9

Customers can also benefit from the electric motor’s regenerative braking 10 and added torque when towing, moving heavier loads or negotiating demanding off-road scenarios such as rock crawls and steep inclines. Ford engineers also revised the suspension tuning for optimum comfort and assured on- and off-road performance, taking into account Ranger PHEV’s unique chassis and weight distribution.

Where available, Ford Pro Home Charging will enable owners to schedule charging during cheaper overnight tariffs, and Ford expects the hybrid powertrain to deliver fuel savings compared with Ranger’s higher-displacement V6 diesel engine option.

Ranger PHEV’s Pro Power Onboard technology supports customers who work hard and play hard with the ability to power high-draw tools and equipment simultaneously on a job site or campsite without needing a generator. The system offers 2.3 kW as standard, but customers can also specify a 6.9 kW option featuring two 15 amp outlets in the load box, with 3.45 kW available from each outlet to meet the demands of heavier-duty equipment. 11

The Stormtrak launch edition offers a high standard specification, including:

  • Unique Stormtrak design features with 18-inch alloy wheels, honeycomb grille, fender vents and decal kit
  • Matrix LED headlamps, Flexible Rack System, Pro Trailer Backup Assist and a 360-degree camera as standard for maximum functionality 9
  • Stormtrak-only new Chill Grey paint colour, with Agate Black paint also available
  • A luxurious cabin with 10-speaker B&O sound system and unique interior materials

Like every vehicle from Ford Pro, Ranger PHEV is backed by a comprehensive supporting suite of servicing, charging, intuitive software and flexible financing to simplify ownership, improve productivity and reduce running costs. Many Ranger customers are dual-use small businesses who put their pickups to work during the week and use them for leisure at weekends: the FordPass app 12 supports them on-the-go with vehicle health and security alerts. Companies with larger fleets and office-based managers can use data from Ford Pro Telematics 13 to optimise their vehicle efficiency and uptime. Ford Pro’s new digital Logbook also makes it easy to track mileage for simpler accounting and compliance.
