Column: Dodge Charger's flexible chassis has to be world-class for EV and ICE variants

Stellantis likely had to make some tough decisions and compromises with the Dodge Charger's chassis to make it work for gasoline and electric powertrains.

The electric, all-wheel-drive Dodge Charger Daytona is driven by a 400V propulsion system.

One way automakers are hedging their bets on consumer acceptance of electric vehicles is by designing super flexible chassis that can accommodate both battery-electric and traditional gasoline or diesel powertrains.
Stellantis is the latest automaker to do just that with the next-generation Dodge Charger. The electric version — the Charger Daytona Scat Pack and Daytona R/T — will go on sale starting this year, while the gasoline variant — the Charger Sixpack, featuring a twin-turbo inline six-cylinder — arrives in the first quarter of 2025.

The next-generation Charger is built on Stellantis' STLA Large platform, which is designed to underpin a variety of vehicles from sports cars to SUVs.

Hyundai's Genesis luxury brand is among the first to market a vehicle that offers both EV and internal combustion engine powertrains, with the GV70 and the GV70 Electrified crossovers. JLR plans to launch the battery-powered version of the Land Rover Range Rover this year. As with the GV70 models, the Rovers will look very similar with only the charge port and lack of exhaust tips differing between the gasoline and battery versions.

While it might be less of an engineering challenge to stuff a battery pack under the floorboards of a high-riding utility vehicle, Stellantis likely had to make some tough decisions and compromises with the Charger.

The company has not yet detailed any changes to the STLA Large chassis to accommodate both EVs and ICE vehicles, but a YouTube video offers some clues.

It appears as if the floorpan and front bulkhead of the platform retains the hump for the transmission — an appendage that is generally not needed in an EV. The video also appears to show the battery pack tucked under the floorboards. That wouldn't be much of an issue in an SUV, but sports cars such as the Charger need a low center of gravity to deliver road-hugging handling that is safe for high-performance driving. The electric Charger's horsepower ranges from 496 to 670.

A partial vehicle image shows the Dodge Charger Daytona Scat Pack's wheels, half-shafts, front and rear electric drive modules and the high voltage battery pack.

Here's what Stellantis is saying about STLA Large: "The platform's inherent flexibility enables engineers and designers to adjust the wheelbase, overall length, overall width and height, and ground clearance. A variety of suspension modules and powertrain cradles can be employed to suit vehicle specific performance objectives that include ride, handling and comfort. Engineers can adjust key dimensions, such as the front spindle to the driver foot, the front and rear overhang, or the passenger compartment floor, to fine-tune vehicle capabilities and performance."

We'll have to wait until closer to the launch of the ICE version of the Charger to see how Stellantis engineers packaged the exhaust system, driveshaft and rear axle and how the company will build both versions of the vehicle on the same line at the Windsor, Ontario, plant.

Even with the Chevrolet Camaro out of the race, the Charger can't be just good enough. Both versions have to be great. Ford has revamped the Mustang, and there are a number of high-performance cars in the same price range as the Charger that deliver world-class levels of performance without any major compromises.
