Il sistema ibrido plug-in dell'Outlander PHEV è dotato di un motore a benzina a quattro cilindri da 2,4 litri che è responsabile della trazione delle ruote anteriori, fungendo anche da generatore di potenza per i due motori elettrici associati , uno sull'asse anteriore da 85 kW. e un altro nella parte posteriore, da 100 kW, quindi parliamo rispettivamente di 115 CV e 136 CV. Inoltre, a bordo del nuovo Outlander PHEV è presente anche il pluripremiato sistema di trazione integrale "S-AWC" di Mitsubishi con diverse modalità di guida che consentono di uscire con successo dalle situazioni più complicate. Utilizzando una manopola, il conducente può selezionare la modalità di regolazione della trazione in ogni circostanza - "Normale", "Asfalto", "Ghiaia", "Neve" e "Fango" - a cui se ne aggiungono altre due che corrispondono al funzionamento dell'ibrido sistema "Eco" e "Power" per le fasi di sorpasso . Il nuovo Outlander PHEV si unisce alla gamma di SUV più efficienti in termini di autonomia, utilizzando una batteria agli ioni di litio con una capacità netta di 20 kWh . Molto di più rispetto alla prima generazione che disponeva di 12 kW e 13,8 kWh quando venne sottoposta al relativo restyling quasi dieci anni fa, quindi l'autonomia in modalità elettrica sarà vicina ai 100 chilometri. Nel ciclo misto i chilometri saranno circa 87 . Il suo prezzo? Non è stato ancora comunicato dal marchio giapponese ma si prevede che oscillerà tra i 55.000 ed i 60.000 euro.

The flagship model is a game-changer for the market with a unique position that reshapes the customer perspective.

 

The New Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV delivers dynamism and sophistication developed for the European market. Embracing the I-Fu-Do-Do product concept, that translates to authentic and majestic from Japanese, it delivers long range PHEV technology, impressive design, incredible levels of safety and comfort and new levels of quality to meet the demands of the European market.

 

The New Outlander PHEV is built on international success and the strong foundations of the previous three generations. The D-SUV’s predecessor pioneered the PHEV + SUV format selling 200,000 units in Europe since its introduction back in 2013, winning numerous awards and gaining recognition for excellence. Now, the fourth generation Outlander, and the second iteration of the plug-in hybrid vehicle, is ready to build on its predecessor’s incredible foundations, delivering new levels of innovation for European customers.

Its design delivers a bold, wilful character that emits adventurousness through its distinctive aesthetic. The New Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV’s Dynamic Shield is its daring and distinctive front face. From the side, the vehicle’s stance delivers stability and a strong horizontal body structure with muscular lines. At the rear the sculpted hexagon style expresses strength, and the tail lights’ horizontal design emphasises stability and width.

The New Mitsubishi Outlander starts production at the end of 2024 at the firm’s Okazaki plant, joining the company’s revitalised line-up and following recent launches of the new ASX and the All-New COLT.

 

Design

The New Outlander PHEV’s exterior is bold, designed for adventure, exuding confidence and mixes new looks with a nod to Mitsubishi’s heritage and classic Pajero SUV. The front face of the D-SUV is daring and distinctive with the dynamic shield delivering an aesthetic that projects both performance and protection.

 

The stance conveys stability with the vehicle’s strong shoulders, while the front lighting technology displays a look to the future with high-tech adaptive LEDs. The high-positioned front lamps feature a sharp look and enhance recognition. The low-positioned headlamps, including up to 12 individual LEDs to change the lighting configuration depending on what’s on the road ahead, provide improved distant lighting without dazzling oncoming vehicles. Sequential indicators using 21 LEDs add a dynamic look to the vehicle, and at the same time increase visibility to other road users.

 

A shift to the New Outlander PHEV’s side design reveals a strong horizontal body structure with muscular fender flares and the prominent Jet Tail Fin rear pillar – a cue that adds dynamism to the look and gives a floating appearance to the roof line.

 

The New Outlander PHEV’s surfaces deliver a perception of sculpted solidity, with distinctive, robust characteristics, as though sculpted from a solid metal block. The alloy wheel designs, whether 18” or 20”  options, reinforcing the elegance of the striking looks, and help seat the car to the road.

 

The D-SUV’s rear identity is defined by the hexaguard horizon, expressing  incredible stability, performance and instilling confidence. Just as with the front design’s character, heritage is at the centre of the rear look. The sculpted hexagon motif expresses strength and is inspired by the rear gate of the iconic Pajero, a vehicle inducted into the Japan Automotive Hall of Fame’s Historic Car list.

 

The rear lights incorporate the Grand Horizon design approach, again expressing stability through the T-shaped design. The LED lighting emphasises width, harmonising with the horizon toward which the vehicle is heading.

 

The range of trims – Inform, Invite, Intense, and Instyle – extend and reinforce the D-SUV’s design and character, and the extensive range of accessories add new dimensions and personalised attributes. And with a choice of 12 colours – five two-tone and seven monotone – the New Outlander PHEV can become an even greater reflection of the customers personality. The new moonstone grey metallic colour adds a sharp blue glow to the solid-like grey by combining the interference of light from blue with the reflected light from

aluminium. The outer colour has changed from two to three layers, resulting in a diamond-like colour.

Stepping inside the New Outlander PHEV and the interior reflects the Japanese omotenashi meticulous approach to detail and hospitality. The cabin is defined by the Mitsubishi touch, delivering a unique experience with the emphasis placed on operability, visibility, and convenience.

 

Improved design expands the interior dimensions and improves NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) performance to deliver a larger cabin with more space and comfort but with increased quietness and fewer vibrations for the occupants.

 

From the front seats the vehicle’s horizontal axis comes into view. A solid line that runs through the centre of the steering wheel with the digital-rich instrument cluster above it, under the floating infotainment display and into the front passenger side, to create a spacious, rich space.

 

All the physical touch points for the New Outlander PHEV’s interior – the steering wheel, shifter, dials, power window switches and handles – are designed to work reliably, giving an accurate response to inspire confidence both in their operation and in the vehicle. The digital aspects of the interior, including the instrument cluster, HUD and infotainment system, have been created to make them intuitive and visually appealing.

 

An aspect of the interior that is in constant use but is rarely mentioned is the rearview mirror. The New Outlander PHEV’s uses a sophisticated frameless digital rearview mirror, matching the cabin’s character, and improving overall visibility. When it’s difficult to see behind the vehicle due to passengers or luggage, or due to environmental conditions, switching to the rear camera image increases rearward visibility and supports safe driving.

 

The sophisticated, high-quality interior uses improved seating technology to increase comfort and functionality; heated and ventilated systems, massage function and increased support add a premium feel. Finished in a range of materials and colours with high-quality stitching, matched by the material and stitch lines on the instrument panel and door trim, with well-thought-out storage spaces designed for convenience and subtle ambient lighting in the doors, the New Outlander PHEV creates a calm, luxurious space for front occupants.

 

The New Outlander PHEV’s rear passengers are also given the maximum amount of comfort too. Heating controls are available to make any journey as relaxing as possible, and the seat back height has been increased to help prevent fatigue.

 

The New Outlander PHEV’s interior is bathed in natural light by the large panoramic sunroof which can be opened to let in fresh air. The 928mm long and 702mm wide panel gives a huge sense of openness and space to the cabin.

The D-SUV has comfort, versatility and practicality as its building blocks; the 40:20:40 split type rear seats give more flexibility so they can be arranged depending on loading needs. The improved cargo compartment opening and expanded interior space make it easy to load and unload cargo in a variety of situations, and with 495 litres of load space, there’s now more room for all the essentials of daily life. And if you need more space, with the rear seats reclined (using the easy operation folding lever) volume grows to 1,422 litres with sunroof.

 

Powertrain 

The New Outlander PHEV has been comprehensively updated to provide a superior offering for customers. Core to its updates is the completely revised PHEV powertrain, extending its EV driving range, delivering the instantaneous acceleration expected from EVs and an improved refinement that brings a quietness to the cabin.

 

The system combines an efficient four-cylinder petrol engine, two high-power motors, and a larger lithium-ion battery pack linked to a shift-by-wire transmission to increase output over the previous generation vehicle by around 40 percent. While the drive battery now has a total capacity of 22.7 kWh meaning the new model can keep driving in EV mode and avoid starting the engine even longer. According to the official WLTP test EV-only mode delivers a range of up to 86km.

 

The front-mounted electric motor produces 85kW/255Nm, while the rear unit delivers 100kW/195Nm but housed in a smaller volume thanks to an integrated motor control unit, simplifying the powertrain’s packaging.

 

Advancements have been made to the D-SUV’s efficiency. The larger battery pack is now able to deliver continuous output 108% higher than the previous generation due to reduced internal resistance of the battery. The new liquid cooled allows the pack to unleash its full potential, ensuring strong starts and maintaining a quiet ride no matter what the conditions.

 

The New Outlander PHEV also benefits from the in heat pump system, reducing power consumption even when the climate control is in operation and contributes to longer EV range, even in cold weather conditions.

While the base elements of the combustion engine remain similar to that found in the previous generation; 2,360cc, 16-valve and DOHC, the development team have introduced exhaust gas recirculation, expanded cooling channels and an integrated exhaust manifold integrated to boost fuel efficiency and performance. The 100kW/203Nm unit works seamlessly with the electrified components to deliver an unbroken dynamic experience, with a combined output of 225kW or what is the same, 302 HP, and an increase in the capacity of the fuel tank to 53 litres has expanded the total possible range when combining EV driving with hybrid driving. Based on the official test cycle fuel efficiency of 0.8 litres/100km, emissions of 18g/km and 19g/km of CO₂ for 18” and 20” alloy wheels respectively and a total range of 844km*.

Performance from the New Outlander PHEV’s powertrain enriches the driving experience, while making the vehicle even more practical in everyday situations. The increased output means 0-100km/h acceleration is now far swifter at 7.9 seconds, for easier motorway merging for example.

 

Three drive modes help maximise efficiency and performance: EV mode, Series Hybrid mode, and Parallel Hybrid mode. Each designed to optimise the driving experience depending on the situation.

• EV mode: using pure electric power in low/middle speed scenarios
• Series Hybrid mode: engine generates electricity when needed, for example during uphill acceleration
• Parallel Hybrid mode: the electric motor and engine work in unison, during high-speed cruising

 

The driver can also manually control how the vehicle uses the onboard power through four easily selectable options:

• Normal: automatically optimises EV/Hybrid drive
• EV: pure EV drive (when battery charge is sufficient)
• Save: prioritises maintaining battery charge level
• Charge: recharges the battery

 

The uprated PHEV powertrain means that the New Outlander remains in all-electric mode even when the driving style is more enthusiastic at speeds of up to 135km/h, and drivers are assured of sufficient driving range even when using the air conditioner, while at the same time helping to reduce the frequency of charging.

 

But when it is time to charge the New Outlander PHEV, users can choose from the convenience and efficiency of domestic options or use higher power public infrastructure with both a Type 2 and CHAdeMO connections built-in to the vehicle. And for extra piece of mind, a locking function is included that means users can feel safe while charging at a public charging point. And helping to make the New Outlander PHEV a complete part of the user’s life, it’s compatible with vehicle-to-home charging, so you can feed power between the home and vehicle when needed.

 

Chassis and driveline

The New Outlander PHEV gives incredible driving confidence to whoever is behind the steering wheel. With the intelligent S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) making sure traction is maximised no matter the situation, seven selectable drive modes to match the conditions and driver needs, revised chassis components, and improved steering feel and feedback the D-SUV delivers stability, performance and enhanced driveability.

 

Driveability is a critical quality in the D-SUV segment, where vehicle size is balanced against the need produce a calm and luxurious experience. The New Outlander PHEV’s dimensions of 1,750mm tall, 4,719mm long, 1,862mm wide and with a wheelbase of 2,704mm deliver on practicality and refinement, and its underpinnings supply driving confidence.

 

The improved S-AWC integrates the latest state-of-the-art system, developed with insights from rally fields that gives a high level of handling predictability without impeding the driver’s intent thanks also to the e-motor placement on each axle for optimal front and rear torque distribution, a feat that cannot be achieved by conventional 4WD systems with a propeller shaft. The technology ensures an uncompromised and pleasurable driving experience whether no matter the surface.

The New Outlander PHEV includes seven selectable driving modes, each tailored to achieve outstanding driving performance on any road and various conditions, whether it’s NORMAL, ECO, POWER, TARMAC, GRAVEL, SNOW, or MUD. Each is easily and intuitively selectable using the central dial in the cabin, and ensure every driver feels secure in even the harshest conditions.

 

The foundations for these advanced chassis systems are a revised suspension and steering layout. The tyres, shock absorbers, and spring rate have all been tuned to improve ride comfort while the dual pinion assist electric power steering has been engineered for more manageable steering when parking and increased feedback at medium to high speeds for improved handling.

 

The New Outlander PHEV’s agility is aided by its redefined suspension setup, crafted with lightweight and high-rigidity aluminium to help reduce weight and deliver a comfortable, settled, consistent ride.

 

The multilink design includes lightweight, high-rigidity aluminium knuckles at the front and rear, reduced weight with high rigidity achieved through the use of a hollow stabiliser and forged aluminium for the front lower arm and rear upper arm. The suspension also integrates a hydraulic-type front lower arm bush for a higher quality ride and a cross member that serves as anti-vibration support to provide a smoother ride. The enhancements to the New Outlander PHEV’s chassis extend to braking performance. The D-SUV uses larger brake discs then the previous generation to give it increased stopping power.

 

Reduced braking effort and a safer, more reliable feeling during high-speed driving are all achieved with 350mm ventilated discs both front and rear mounted in the vehicle’s 18” or 20” alloy wheels.

 

Digitalisation and connectivity

Europe is a market driven by digitalisation and connectivity, boasting the biggest penetration of cellular technology in the world, making in-car services an essential component of the New Outlander PHEV. The D-SUV delivers with technologies that offer convenience and functionality through high-definition displays, wireless screen mirroring and intuitive voice control.

 

Working in collaboration with celebrated audio equipment manufacturer Yamaha the New Outlander PHEV includes Dynamic Sound, an eight or 12-speaker audio system, especially tuned to optimise the acoustic characteristics of the cabin to deliver a premium, immersive sound experience, making driving even more exciting, comfortable and enjoyable.

 

From the driver’s seat, the New Outlander PHEV’s increased levels of digitalisation become apparent. A high-resolution 12.3” fully digital driver display incorporates a TFT colour display sitting behind the steering wheel. The highly customisable screen gives incredible levels of visibility and an enriched choice of content to match the needs of the individual and the journey.

 

The high definition screen allows the user to switch between two display modes (classic and enhanced) providing audio and navigation information, while the energy flow screen allows instinctive understanding of engine and motor output.

Dynamic Sound Yamaha Premium combines the power of Yamaha’s eight speakers. While Dynamic Sound Yamaha Ultimate incorporates 12 speakers, including the sub-woofer, all developed based on their flagship consumer electronics NS-5000 speaker and also incorporates dual amplifiers with Yamaha’s DSP (Digital Signal Processor).

The New Outlander PHEV’s focus on safety highlights Mitsubishi’s determination to make its vehicles the safest on the market. The D-SUV redefines what’s possible with improvements to passive safety and the introduction of a far stronger body complimented by a full suite of active safety features to keep occupants and other road users safe.

 

The New Outlander PHEV’s  structure is enhanced with ultra-high tensile strength steel in key areas with multiple load path structures to improve crash energy absorption should the worst happen. Integrated throughout the cabin, eight airbags deliver effective protection for occupants, while ISOfix seat anchors provide secure locations for child seats.

 

Preventing incidents from happening, and mitigating anything that does occur, is key to the New Outlander PHEV’s suite of advanced driver assistance and safety systems all taking in data from a collection of onboard sensors position around the D-SUV to give a 360° view of the vehicle’s surroundings.

 

Each system is designed maximise safety and convenience, provide peace and of mind and help make the journey more relaxed, but without interfering with the driving experience. The technologies are built around a mixture of ultrasonic sensors, radar and camera technology, helping it to avoid obstacles, warn the driver or take evasive action to mitigate or prevent incidents from occurring.

 

Pedestrian protection is enhanced thanks to the Forward Collision Mitigation system (FCM), a radar-based autonomous emergency braking system that reads the road ahead to maximise safety taking in to account pedestrians, cyclists and with expanded capabilities to help the driver at junctions too. It’s one of more than a dozen advanced technologies that keep the New Outlander PHEV, its occupants, and other road users safe.

 

The other systems include: Rear Automatic Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Warning with Lane Change Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition and Driver Monitoring System.

 

Add to that the ability to make sure the driver is fully alert through the Driver Attention Monitor system that uses steering analysis to continually monitor and assesses driver behaviour behind the wheel to help determine if the they are becoming inattentive and alerts the driver if they are using visual and audio alerts. Another way to maximise safety.

 

The New Outlander PHEV’s functionality also helps when towing with Trailer Stability Assist. The system continuously monitors the swaying of the trailer and applies the brakes to one or more of the car’s wheels when necessary. If needed, it applies the brakes to all four wheels and cuts off engine power until control is regained. On top of all these systems is the eCall function, so if the worst does happen, help is only the press of a button away.
