  4. Jaguar Land Rover adds third Defender shift to meet high demand The Defender has been JLR’s top seller for the past seven quarters as the company prioritized higher-margin models amid the chip shortage. LONDON -- Jaguar Land Rover has added a third shift for the Land Rover Defender SUV at its Slovakian plant to help clear a backlog of orders for its best-selling model. The Defender, which is available in three different body lengths, has been JLR’s top seller for the past seven quarters as the company prioritized higher-margin models amid the chip shortage. The offroader topped the automaker’s chart for wholesales (sales to dealers) for the quarter ending Dec. 31 at 23,816, company figures show. Orders for the Defender remain high at around quarter of the company’s 214,000-strong order book, JLR said. “As we move to three shifts you will see increasingly a lot of our orders on Defender will start fall and retails [sales] increase,” interim CEO Adrian Mardell said on an earnings call to announce its quarterly results. The company posted its first profit in eight quarters for the quarter ending Dec. 31. JLR is focusing on boosting production of the Defender, the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, which it called its “three most profitable models.” The three models accounted for 64 percent of the company’s wholesale figures, rising to three quarters with sales of cars from the company’s joint venture in China removed from the mix. JLR has been forced to cut production of its more affordable models as the chip crisis continued to hamper the company’s abilities to build cars. The plant that builds the Defender in Nitra, Slovakia was omitted from the production cuts. Wholesales of the automaker’s traditional best-selling model, the Range Rover Evoque compact SUV, fell below 10,000 for only the second quarter in the model’s history. Meanwhile, sales of the Land Rover Discovery Sport midsize SUV, another formerly strong seller, were the worst since its launch, at just 6,230. Wholesales of the Discovery large SUV, which is also built in Nitra, fell to just 1,924 in the last quarter -- the lowest volume since it was launched in 2018. JLR’s two most expensive models, the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, were the second and third biggest sellers in the quarter respectively, helping push the company’s selling price to over 70,000 pounds ($87,000), Mardell said. “The Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and the MLA architecture that both models are built on, are fundamental to our business model and our business success,” Mardell told analysts. Mardell said JLR’s normal sales volume, without production constraints, was about 40,000 vehicles a month, up from about 27,000 currently. “Today we are a long way from normal,” he said. “I believe the challenge through 2023 will continue to be supply rather than demand.” (ANE)

  6. Volvo readies EV push in biggest product revamp under Geely The product plans amount to the largest revamp of Volvo’s model line-up since Geely acquired the brand from Ford. Volvo Cars is gearing up for an electric blitz to convert all its mainstay models -- three SUVs and two sedans -- into battery-electric vehicles and to introduce a luxury electric van aimed at boosting sales in Asia, two people with knowledge of the plans said. The Swedish carmaker, wholly owned by China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, is expected to launch at least six new battery-electric vehicles through 2026, the two people told Reuters. Volvo has announced an objective to make its entire lineup fully electric by 2030. The company’s Australia unit has said it plans to sell only EVs in that market by 2026. The previously unreported product plans amount to the largest revamp of Volvo’s model line-up since Geely acquired the brand from Ford Motor in 2010. Under its new owners, Volvo started to share technologies such as car platforms with Geely. The makeover for Volvo, a Swedish brand that built a reputation for safety and utilitarian design, follows from a greater focus on customer trends in Asia and a push to win sales there, the people said. The two people with knowledge of Volvo’s planning asked not to be named because details have not been announced by the company. Geely declined to comment. Among the new battery electric cars being planned for the next four years is a Volvo-branded van that would be based on a vehicle Geely’s Zeekr brand sells in China. Called the Zeekr 009, the hulking, battery-electric van, which starts at about 500,000 yuan ($74,179), offers three rows of seating. The vehicle competes against the likes of the Toyota Alphard, a business or family van, with airplane business class-like seats for passengers that has proven popular in Asian markets such as China and Japan as a limousine alternative. Volvo has moved development work on sedans and the coming people-mover model to its Shanghai research and development hub, they said. That center, which has tripled its design staff to about 60 people, has recently moved to a new and larger building in Shanghai, one of the sources said. The first of Volvo's new planned electric models, the EX90 battery-electric SUV, was unveiled late last year. It is expected to go on sale in early 2024. Other battery-electric cars in the pipeline include electric versions of Volvo's main products – the XC90, XC60 and XC40 crossover vehicles and the S60 and S90 sedans, the sources said. Those cars will follow Volvo's established, simple design cues, but the new van will target buyers in China and other markets with a more "emotional" design that builds from the Zeekr 009, which has a massive, LED-illuminated grille, one of the sources said. Volvo has carved out and sold its gasoline engine and hybrid powertrain operations to Geely. The Chinese automaker has moved to combine all of its gasoline powertrain assets, including those from Volvo, with factories being carved out of Renault to create a new company focused on hybrid and gasoline engines. Renault and Geely are working to finalize a deal to bring Saudi Aramco in as an investor and partner in that venture, Reuters has reported. (ANE)

  16. sicuramente, come "EQG".
  21. Alfa Romeo Tonale production increased to meet expected U.S. demand The Tonale SUV is being built in Pomigliano, Italy, alongside the closely related Dodge Hornet MILAN -- Stellantis is adding a second shift at its factory in Pomigliano, Italy to increase output of the Alfa Romeo Tonale compact SUV, while cutting a shift for the Fiat Panda minicar. The production increase is expected to meet additional demand from export markets. European sales of the Tonale started last spring. Deliveries to the U.S, where it will be sold only as a plug-in hybrid, will start in the second quarter. The Tonale was recently launched in Japan. The Pomigliano factory in southern Italy will soon start production of the closely related Dodge Hornet compact SUV for North America. With the new shift, Tonale output has increased to 400 vehicles a day, Stellantis said. The production increase to two shifts per day on the Tonale line will end the temporary layoffs of 1,600 workers at the Pomigliano plant, according to the FIM union. The union said that output at the factory increased by 34 percent in 2022 to 165,000 units, of which 20,000 were Tonales and 145,000 were Pandas.. Unions in Italy typically report production figures rather than automakers. Production of the Dodge Hornet will start in the next few weeks and the first U.S. deliveries will follow in the second quarter. Alfa Romeo sold 11,171 Tonales in Europe in 2022, according to figures from Dataforce. Of that total, 4,661 were registered in Italy, the industry association UNRAE said. CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato said in November that orders for the Tonale would reach 35,000 by the end of 2022. The Tonale is available in Europe with gasoline plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid drivetrains and also as a diesel variant in some European markets. Imparato said the Tonale will help Alfa Romeo achieve his goal of generating 40 percent of the brand's global sales from outside Europe by 2030, compared with just 18 percent in 2021. Production of the Dodge Hornet will start in the Pomigliano plant in the next few weeks and the first U.S. deliveries will follow in the second quarter. Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis said last August that he expects the Hornet to exceed 40,000 annual sales. The Hornet will be available with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine or a 1.5-liter plug-in hybrid. One possible hurdle to production growth will be the availability of batteries. Imparato said in November that production on the Tonale plug-in hybrid would be capped in 2023 because Alfa Romeo will only receive 35,000 batteries from Chinese battery maker CATL. "We might be able to sell the whole 2023 production in a few months," he added. The Panda retained its lead in the minicar segment in Europe in 2022, with 126,033 sales, down 7.5 percent, according to Dataforce. It is set to be built at Pomigliano until 2026, unions said last year. (ANE) Tonale per mercato... e per potenza... (i non specificati sono in Grecia e Bulgaria)
