possibile spin off di Maserati secondo Palmer.... Maserati could 'stand on its own' in the future, Stellantis CFO says A number of the Italian brand's competitors have gone public in recent years, including Ferrari, Porsche and Aston Martin. Maserati could be a stand-alone brand in the future if it can become sustainably profitable, Stellantis Chief Financial Officer Richard Palmer said, adding that no decision has been made. In recent years, a number of Maserati’s high-end competitors have been spun off from their parent companies as separate listings, including Ferrari (from Fiat) at the end of 2015 and Porsche (from Volkswagen Group) at the end of September. Aston Martin went public in 2018. VW Group has also asked several of its separate brands to model what they would look like as public companies. Other recent market debuts include Geely and Volvo’s Polestar brand. But the record is mixed for these new entrants. As of Thursday, Ferrari’s market capitalization nearly equalled that of Stellantis; Porsche’s share price has largely held value despite a larger market selloff. Aston Martin and Polestar, however, have struggled. Maserati’s performance as part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles ahead of the merger with PSA Group that created Stellantis was uneven, with ever-shifting product plans and sales forecasts that failed to pan out. The brand has fared better under Stellantis, which was formed at the end of January 2021. Global sales rose by 41 percent in 2021 to 24,300 units. Maserati revenue was up 47 percent in 2021 to more than 2 billion euros. Adjusted operating profit was 103 million euros compared with a loss of 91 million euros in 2020. Operating margin was 5.1 percent – and 6.5 percent in the second half after the MC20 supercar entered the market. Third quarter revenues this year were up 23 percent this year over 2021, Stellantis announced Thursday. Shipments rose by 14 percent. Breaking the cycle Palmer credited the launch of the Grecale midsize SUV, as well as higher sales of the MC20, for those gains. He said Maserati was well positioned to break what one analyst called the “boom and bust” cycle of previous years. “I’m pretty confident we can break that pattern with the new team and product plan we have,” he told analysts Thursday on Stellantis’ third-quarter earnings call. “The frequency of launches is a big focus. In the past that has been our biggest issue, because we would launch a vehicle and leave an extended gap to the next one.” “The important thing is to maintain enough novelty value in the lineup and continue to refresh it,” he added. Asked whether Stellantis was planning to list Maserati separately, Palmer said the answer is “no” at the moment, as the group focused on building out the luxury brand’s product plan, which emphasizes a shift to full-electric models in the coming years. “I am very optimistic and confident that we can build a very interesting luxury car business, and eventually at some point in time that could be an asset that can stand on its own,” he said. “Clearly it has a very strong brand, its own network and a very independent type of business, even in the way we run it inside Stellantis.” The MC20 Cielo roadster will be Maserati's most expensive car ever, at 260,000 euros. Following the Grecale, Maserati will launch its most expensive model, the MC 20 Cielo, a roadster version of the sports car that will cost 260,000 euros. It will be followed by the lightweight GranTurismo coupe, on a new platform, as a serious competitor to Ferrari. The GranTurismo will use the new Nettuno V-6 engine also found in the MC20 rather than the V-8 used in previous models. It will be followed by the Gran Cabrio convertible, as well as a full-electric Folgore variant that tops the Porsche Taycan in acceleration. By 2025, Maserati will launch full-electric versions of the MC20, as well as a new generation of the Quattroporte sports sedan and Levante large SUV, both as electric-only cars. The Ghibli midsize sedan will not be replaced because of changing customer tastes, Maserati said earlier this year. (ANE)

SHANGHAI -- Zhejiang Geely Holding Group's premium electric car business plans to sell the first electric vehicle produced under the Zeekr brand in Europe next year, Zeekr's CEO said. Zeekr joins a growing list of Chinese automakers looking to launch or expand sales of electric vehicles in Europe next year, including BYD, Xpeng and Great Wall Motors. Geely, owner of Volvo Cars and Polestar and an investor in Mercedes-Benz, launched Zeekr in 2021 as a premium brand aimed at younger customers. Geely Automobile, the listed unit of Geely, said earlier that it plans to spin off Zeekr and float the business. An Conghui, CEO of Zeekr and Geely president, told reporters at a roundtable on Tuesday in Wuzhen in Zhejiang province that Geely had created Zeekr with the aim of meeting standards in Europe and the United States from the outset. An said Geely would market its 001 electric crossover in Europe next year. He did not give a sales target or discuss whether Zeekr would consider overseas production. Geely provided a transcript of An's remarks on Wednesday. Zeekr launched the 001 in China in late 2021. Its sales hit 39,474 units in the first nine months, while Tesla sold 219,112 Model Y crossovers in China over the same period, according to China Passenger Car Association. The Zeekr 001 starts at the equivalent of $41,000 in China compared with $40,000 for the Tesla Model Y after a recent price cut. Zeekr has not announced pricing for overseas markets. (Reuters)

Kia to start EV production in Europe as early as 2025 Kia will start building electric cars in Europe as soon as 2025 as part of a newly expanded EV strategy. MILAN – Kia will expand its range of full-electric models with a small crossover due to be launched in 2024 as well as a compact hatchback as soon as 2025 that would be the South Korean brand’s first EV assembled in Europe. The two cars were revealed as part of Kia’s revised 2030 EV strategy, under which it will launch at least two full-electric vehicles a year starting in 2023, Kia Italy executives said last week at an event here. Kia global CEO Ho Sung Song announced the new model roadmap in March at an investor day. By 2027, Kia will have 14 EVs in its global lineup. It currently sells three in Europe: the Soul and Niro small crossovers and the EV6 midsize crossover. The brand’s previous EV plan called for a lineup of 11 models by 2026. Under the expanded plan, Kia will add two electric pickups, including one for emerging markets and an entry-level model. These are some of the key elements of the revised plan: 2023: The EV9 large SUV will be launched in the second half. It has already been shown in concept form. The EV9 will be sold in Europe, and will have a 100-kilowatt battery pack with a range of more than 540 km (335 miles); 2024: Unnamed small crossover; 2025: Minicar-sized crossover, potentially made in India. At the March investor event, Kia said India will become a production base for EVs “around 2025” for the “A+ to C segments” (minicar to compact). Also in 2025, a larger compact SUV at 4.6 meters long will be launched. Around 2025: Europe-assembled compact-size hatchback. At 4.4 meters long, the car would be similar to the current Ceed hatchback, which is built in the Zilina plant in Slovakia. The Ceed and its variants (ProCeed and XCeed) are available as plug-in hybrids. By 2027: Midsize fastback sedan. Unspecified date: Two "pickup/commercial" vehicles are set to be launched. Giuseppe Bitti, Kia Italy chief operating officer, said at the event in Milan that the plan is still subject to final approval and that “dates may vary depending on market conditions.” The Kia EV6 midsize crossover, which is underpinned by the Hyundai Group’s E-GMP full-electric platform, has recorded 22,267 sales through September in Europe. 1.2 million EVs by 2030 According to the 2030 roadmap to electrification presented in March, Kia aims to increase annual sales of all models to 4 million by 2030 from 3.15 million in 2022. Sales of full-electric cars should grow to 1.2 million by that date, from 160,000 in 2022 and 807,000 in 2026. Plug-in hybrids would account for 800,000 units by 2030. Kia’s EV sales in Europe are expected to grow from 65,000 in 2022 to 309,000 in 2026 and 400,000 in 2030. The share of electric models in Europe will grow from 13 percent in 2021 to 51 percent in 2026 and 63 percent in 2030. The EU has mandated that only zero-emission cars can be sold in the bloc after 2035. According to the plan, production of full-electric models will start in China next year, in the U.S. in 2024, and in Europe and India by 2025. In Europe, small and medium-sized EVs will be produced starting from 2025. In the United States, where midsize SUVs and pickups are popular, electric versions of these models will be produced starting in 2024. In China, Kia plans to introduce midsize EVs in 2023, and entry-level and midsize EV models will be built in India starting in 2025. Kia has gained the second-most market share in Europe since 2017, trailing only Toyota with an increase of two percentage points for a 5 percent share. Kia and sibling brand Hyundai have done a better job than rivals securing semiconductors and other components, analysts said, and their EV offerings have been extremely competitive. The Niro was the No. 5-selling EV in Europe through September, with 30,768 units sold (-10 percent from 2021), according to Dataforce; the EV6, which is underpinned by the Hyundai Group’s E-GMP full electric platform, has been a success with 22,267 sales through September after launching at the end of 2021.
