Polestar to cut around 450 jobs globally Swedish EV maker Polestar to cut about 15 percent of its total workforce Polestar said it plans to cut around 450 jobs globally, about 15 percent of its total workforce amid "challenging market conditions." The Swedish electric vehicle maker has struggled to gain market share in a weakening economic environment and a slowing sales of EVs. "As part of this business plan, we need to adjust the size of our business and operations. This involves reducing external spend and, regrettably, also our number of employees," a Polestar spokesperson said on Friday. Since its 2022 listing in the U.S., Polestar has been tapping its key backers Volvo and Geely for new funds. That included a $1.6 billion loan last year to help cover operating costs. Polestar in November trimmed delivery forecasts and outlined a revised business plan, aiming for its cash flow to break even in 2025 and to reduce its reliance on external funding from key owners Volvo Cars and Geely. The company also said in November it would double down on cutting costs to boost margins. Polestar delivered 54,600 vehicles last year, compared with its target of about 60,000. Polestar increased sales in Europe 12 percent to 36,027, according to preliminary figures from market research Dataforce. CEO Thomas Ingenlath said this month that he is optimistic for sales in 2024 with European orders for the Polestar 4 opening at the end of January and production of the Polestar 3 starting early this year after delays due to software issues. Over the past year, many automakers have warned that the anticipated growth in EVs has been slow to emerge due to poor demand, heavy price cuts, lower subsidies, and supply chain issues. (Reuters)

Porsche CFO says Europe may delay combustion-engine ban Consumers have been put off by a lack of reliable charging networks, high prices and the rollback of incentives. Europe's plan to phase out the sale of new combustion-engine cars by 2035 could be pushed back, said Porsche Chief Financial Officer Lutz Meschke. "There's a lot of discussions right now around the end of the combustion engine," Meschke said on Thursday in Singapore. "I think it could be delayed." A slowdown in EV orders has thrown into question whether the European Union is on track for the phaseout, which represents one of the most ambitious efforts to curb carbon emissions. The region's consumers have been put off by a lack of reliable charging networks, persistently high prices and the rollback of EV incentives. The U.K. has already postponed its planned ban of new gasoline and diesel models by five years to 2035. While manufacturers of premium and luxury EVs can work without subsidies, cutting them from the volume segment is wrong, said Meschke, who spoke on the sidelines of the unveiling of Porsche's long-delayed electric Macan SUV. "We have to see how steep the ramp-up curve is in coming years," Meschke said. "If we have a situation like now, with certain reluctance to buy electric cars in Europe, then maybe the subsidies will come back." Last year, in the weeks before the EU adopted the plan to phase out new combustion-engine vehicles, Germany refused to support the push, demanding that Brussels also protect vehicles running on e-fuels — a technology backed by Porsche. BYD president met Uzbekistan’s president, announced production launch in Uzbekistan factory On January 25th, the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, visited the BYD headquarters in Shenzhen, China. During this visit, Mirziyoyev and Wang Chuanfu, the President of BYD, conducted a remote production start-up ceremony for BYD’s new factory in Uzbekistan, marking the official production launch of the Song Plus DM-i, the first vehicle from this facility. Additionally, Wang presented the 10,000th new energy vehicle (NEV) sold by BYD in the Uzbekistan market – a Yangwang U8 – to President Mirziyoyev. During his visit, President Mirziyoyev witnessed a safety demonstration of BYD’s Blade Battery, gaining insight into the safety and technological aspects of BYD’s products. He also observed the Yangwang U8’s turn-in-place capability at the outdoor intelligent parking demonstration area. In discussions with Wang Chuanfu, Mirziyoyev expressed his hope for increased production capacity at the Uzbekistan facility and a deepening of cooperation between the two entities. This visit coincides with Mirziyoyev’s state visit to China from January 23rd to 25th. His tour of the BYD headquarters was part of a broader engagement with Chinese enterprises. The Uzbekistan-China Investment Forum, held on January 25th in Shenzhen, brought together political and business representatives from both countries. The forum focused on enhancing bilateral economic and trade relations and expanding mutual investments, in line with the important consensus reached between the leaders of the two nations. The agreement to produce electric and hybrid vehicles in Uzbekistan was signed in September last year between the Uzbekistan Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade and BYD. As per the agreement, BYD and Uzavtosanoat JSC, a state-controlled automotive group in Uzbekistan, established a joint venture, “BYD Uzbekistan Factory,” to manufacture electric and hybrid vehicles. BYD’s production layout in other countries The expansion of BYD into Uzbekistan is part of the company’s broader global strategy. Earlier this month, BYD launched three pure electric models in Indonesia and announced a 1.3 billion USD investment in an automotive factory there, expecting a production capacity of 150,000 units. The Financial Times reported mid-month that BYD is constructing its first electric vehicle factory outside Asia in Brazil. Alexandre Baldy, BYD’s Director in South American countries, discussed a potential supply agreement, joint venture, or acquisition with Sigma Lithium, a Brazilian lithium producer worth 2.9 billion USD. Baldy highlighted BYD’s efforts to establish an integrated supply chain in Brazil, including active discussions with Sigma. BYD’s global expansion includes new factories in Thailand, plans for an electric vehicle factory in Hungary, and ongoing negotiations to establish a facility in Mexico. (CNC)

Stellantis will avoid brutal price cuts, Tavares says Stellantis is protected against a downtrend in prices, which could put competitors in trouble, because of its profitability. Tavares: "If you go and cut pricing disregarding the reality of your costs, you will have a bloodbath." Stellantis will avoid being caught in a price war which would destroy its profitability, CEO Carlos Tavares said. The automaker, which is among the most profitable in the industry, is protected against a downtrend in prices, which could put several competitors "in trouble" and at risk of becoming takeover targets, Tavares said. "If you go and cut pricing disregarding the reality of your costs, you will have a bloodbath. I am trying to avoid a race to the bottom," he said on Friday during a presentation of Stellantis' new platform for large battery-electric vehicles. "I know a company that has brutally cut pricing and their profitability has brutally collapsed," Tavares added, without elaborating. Tavares also said that elections in the U.S. and Europe this year will dictate how quickly he can execute his €30 billion investment plan in electric vehicles. Spending will either accelerate or slow down pending who gets elected, he said. "I have no scenario for the fact that it would stop, because we need to fix the global warming issue," he said. Stellantis has been slower to introduce new EV models to the U.S. than its Detroit rivals. Its first fully electric Jeep SUV and the electric Ram pickup will reach the U.S. this year. Ford and General Motors have delayed EV investment in recent months as American car buyers have cooled on EVs, balking at the high prices and a spotty charging infrastructure. U.S. President Joe Biden, who had made speeding EV adoption a centerpiece of his agenda, trailed former President Donald Trump by 5 percentage points among registered voters in seven swing states in a Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll last month. Carmakers are pushing back on the Biden administration's efforts to increase fuel economy, saying stricter rules would cost them billions in fines. In Europe, elections taking place in June also could pose a risk for electric vehicle adoption if the bloc's new parliament decides to further water down EV regulation. Last year, Germany's lobbying to include e-fuels in the EU's regulation to effectively ban new sales of combustion-engine cars by 2035 nearly derailed the legislation. (Bloomberg/ANE)

stessa procedura in Germania Tesla joins rivals in cutting EV prices in Germany Tesla, VW, BYD are trying to win customers after the Berlin government ended EV incentives. Tesla has reduced prices of its Model Y SUV in Germany as automakers including Volkswagen and new entrant BYD try to stoke up demand from customers reluctant to buy EVs. Tesla reduced prices for Model Y Long Range and Model Y Performance by 5,000 euros to 49,990 euros ($54,340) and 55,990 euros respectively in Germany, representing a discount of 9 percent and 8 percent compared to the previous prices. It also cut the price of Model Y rear-wheel drive models by 1,900 euros, or 4.2 percent, to 42,990 euros, according to data on its website. The Model Y was Germany's best-selling battery-electric car last year, with about 45,800 registrations, according to figures released by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) on Tuesday. However, Tesla lost the No. 1 spot as the country's top-selling BEV brand to the VW marque. VW brand's BEV sales increased 12 percent to 70,628 units in 2023, while Tesla's volume fell 9 percent to 63,685. VW is funding EV subsidies for buyers of its ID electric cars after the German government abruptly pulled its support for the incentives. BYD is lowering prices for its EVs in Germany, most significantly for its Atto 3 compact SUV. BYD sold just 4,140 cars in Germany last year but it is aiming for a 10 percent market share after its new car factory in Hungary starts production in two or three years. Tesla is suspending most of its car production at its factory near Berlin from Jan. 29 to Feb. 11 because deliveries of batteries from China are being delayed by the Red Sea shipping crisis. The factory builds the Model Y for European markets. (Automobilwoche/ANE)

SAIC Group targets 1.35 million overseas sales in 2024, high-end brands Zhiji and Feifan to expand globally On January 17th, Zhao Aimin, Deputy General Manager of SAIC International, announced that SAIC Group has set its overseas sales target 2024 at 1.35 million units, with a further goal of 1.5 million units in 2025. Zhao emphasized the group’s capacity to aim for higher targets but stressed the importance of steady progress. SAIC plans to leverage the centenary of its MG brand to promote its global presence, focusing on sales-driven brand publicity. SAIC’s new energy vehicle (NEV) products are currently marketed as “global cars.” Over the next two years, SAIC is set to launch 14 new NEV models worldwide. SAIC’s high-end brands, including Zhiji and Feifan, are also poised for global expansion. These brands may adopt different presentation strategies in international markets. In 2023, SAIC Group sold 5.02 million vehicles, maintaining its position as China’s top automaker for the eighteenth consecutive year. Its overseas sales reached 1.208 million units, marking a record 18.8% year-on-year increase and leading the domestic industry for the eighth year. This achievement sets the stage for an 11.75% increase in overseas sales for SAIC Group in 2024, building on its consecutive eight-year lead in domestic sales. Regarding sales structure, in 2023, SAIC Group’s independent brand sales totaled 2.775 million units, accounting for over 55% of the total sales volume. This figure represents a 2.5% increase from 2022. The group also reported a 4.6% year-on-year growth in NEV sales, totaling 1.123 million units and ranking second among domestic automakers. SAIC’s current overseas sales strategy mainly uses the acquired MG brand to expand overseas sales. It will use its joint venture with GM, SAIC-GM-Wuling, to develop emerging markets such as Southeast Asia. Later, independent brands such as Zhiji and Feifan will be promoted overseas. At present, SAIC is still China’s largest automobile group, but nearly half of its sales come from joint venture brands. Its own brand sales are still less than BYD.
