Munich. The new BMW head-up display is called BMW Panoramic Vision and goes into production with the first NEUE KLASSE models. Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, confirmed this during his speech at the 2023 Annual Conference. BMW is currently developing a completely new technological platform for the NEUE KLASSE, whose name refers to the company's pioneering models of the 1960s. This platform will set new standards in digitalisation, sustainability and design for electric cars. The new head-up display, projecting across the entire width of the windscreen, creates a unique interaction and information surface for all occupants. Frank Weber, Member of the Board for Development at BMW AG, describes the main advantages of this revolutionary new head-up display as follows: “The windscreen becomes a single large display with our new BMW Panoramic Vision, opening up completely new possibilities for the design of our vehicles. Whether the driver decides themselves which information they want to display in their own field of vision, or that all occupants can see the entire content. The revolutionary projection and the significantly more clearly structured cockpit give an impressive new feeling of space and driving. We are taking our proven “eyes on the road – hands on the wheel slogan to a new level.” For the first time the innovative projection technology allows visible displays across the entire width of the windscreen for all passengers. BMW Panoramic Vision shows information that is relevant for the driver and passengers with a higher light intensity and contrast onto a dark-coated area at the lower edge of the windscreen. This creates an extremely sharp image that is always visible across the full width of the windscreen. Information relevant to the driving situation is always available in the right place at the right time. Eyes on the road – hands on the wheel. Driver-centric focus. The BMW Panoramic Vision represents the consistent BMW driver-centric approach in the new BMW iDrive control system for the NEUE KLASSE. The BMW Group was the first car manufacturer to develop a cockpit that focuses on a particularly intensive, safe and concentrated driving experience. On-board computers with digital displays first appeared in the BMW 7 Series in the 1980s. The first BMW iDrive in 2001 comprehensively reduced switches and buttons like no other control system before, creating a modern, uncluttered interior. The first series production of BMW head-up displays followed shortly afterwards. The success story of the BMW Group developing pioneering innovations continues with the new BMW Panoramic Vision head-up display for the NEUE KLASSE. BMW Panoramic Vision and BMW iDrive in the NEUE KLASSE. The BMW Group continues to consistently develop the comprehensive BMW iDrive operating concept with the BMW Panoramic Vision. The company presented its revolutionary BMW i Vision Dee vehicle at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas earlier this year. It shows how an extended head-up display can also be used for display control design and an immersive user experience in the future. The study demonstrates the fusion of reality and the virtual world by turning the windscreen windows into projection surface. This technology is now becoming reality as a series version in NEUE KLASSE vehicles, the BMW Panoramic Vision. At the IAA Mobility 2023 in Munich, the BMW Group will present further steps and new details on the way to the NEUE KLASSE. In addition to the BMW Panoramic Vision, further new control and information elements from the new BMW iDrive will be presented in the NEUE KLASSE. (BMW Group)

Salzgitter, Valencia, St. Thomas: PowerCo forges ahead with expanding its global battery business Cell factory in Valencia to start production of the unified cell in 2026, creating more than 3,000 direct jobs Initial capacity of 40 GWh per year with potential for further expansion Sustainable batteries: PowerCo sets on manufacturing with 100 % green electricity from solar and wind power The Spanish President Pedro Sánchez: “The factory that will be built here exemplifies the Spanish Government's commitment to innovation and sustainable mobility.” PowerCo SE is taking the next step in building its global battery business: In the Spanish region of Valencia, the company today gave the starting signal for construction of its second PowerCo cell factory in the presence of His Majesty King Felipe VI, Spain’s President Pedro Sánchez and Ximo Puig, President of the Valencian Generalitat. Gigafactory Valencia will start production of the unified cell in 2026 and will directly employ more than 3,000 people in the future, with a further up to 30,000 indirect jobs potentially being created at suppliers and partners in Spain according to a recent study. The Volkswagen Group has made battery technology a core element of its NEW AUTO strategy and has established PowerCo, a separate battery company. Since its launch in July 2022, PowerCo has decided three sites for cell factories: Salzgitter, Valencia and St. Thomas in Ontario/Canada, two of them already under construction. The Spanish President Pedro Sánchez: “The factory that will be built here exemplifies the Spanish Government's commitment to innovation and sustainable mobility. It is a sign of our commitment to industry, but also to the characteristics that define an entrepreneurial nation in the global market: innovation, territorial cohesion and public-private cooperation.” Thomas Schmall, Board of Management member responsible for Group Technology and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of PowerCo SE: “We are moving into the fast lane with PowerCo. We have just broken ground for PowerCo’s second gigafactory in Valencia, and are already making the next step with the announcement of another gigafactory in St. Thomas, Canada. Our objective is to make PowerCo a global player in the battery business and pave the way for better mobility with sustainably manufactured battery cells. The gigafactory Valencia is an important milestone in that.” Frank Blome, CEO of PowerCo: “Like the Volkswagen Group, PowerCo stands for responsible conduct. That includes good working conditions, care for the environment and sparing use of scarce resources. We want to be a good neighbour to the people in the region and make a significant contribution to economic development. Not only will we create more than 3,000 jobs of the future, but we also intend to work with the regional government to initiate targeted projects aimed at strengthening science and society.” Gigafactory Valencia: Potential for 60 GWh The annual production capacity is initially 40 GWh, but has the potential to be expanded to 60 GWh in the future. The cell factory is being built over an area of around 130 hectares in Sagunto, in the immediate vicinity of Valencia. Together with the planned supplier park, which will be built parallel to the PowerCo factory, the area even amounts to 200 hectares. Important factors in deciding to build the site in Valencia included the availability of low-cost green electricity, the regional research and innovation cluster, as well as the good transport infrastructure and proximity to the Group’s Spanish production sites. The Valencia gigafactory will supply unified cells to the vehicle plants in Martorell and Pamplona, among others. The President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig, thanked the Volkswagen Group and SEAT for their commitment to Sagunto and the Valencian community: "Mission Valencia stands for a productive alliance between PowerCo, the Generalitat, and the governments of Spain and Europe on the path towards a sustainable transition in mobility. Looking forward, we have the Valencian Community behind us to accelerate our ambitious work with full confidence in what we can achieve when we act together.” PowerCo is aiming to manufacture sustainable batteries in Valencia. The cell factory will be supplied completely with green electricity generated by solar and wind power, for instance by a new 250-hectare solar farm in the immediate vicinity. The raw material cycle will be closed directly on the site of the cell factory 10 billion investment programme for the electrification of Spain Gigafactory Valencia is a core component of the 10 billion euro investment programme called “Future: Fast Forward” which the Volkswagen Group announced last year together with PowerCo, its Spanish subsidiary SEAT S.A. and 49 partners. Under the plan, Volkswagen will also electrify its car factories in Martorell and Pamplona as part of the PERTE programme for electric and connected vehicles. PowerCo bundles the Volkswagen Group’s global battery business throughout the value chain – from raw material supply and development to the construction and operation of gigafactories. By 2030, PowerCo and partners are expected to generate annual revenue of over 20 billion euros. (VW media)

Lindner, il capo dei liberali e ministro delle finanze tedesco BERLIN -- German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said France had declared a "showdown" in the dispute over the EU's plans to end sales of new CO2-emitting cars in 2035. "It is very regrettable that the French government is declaring a showdown to ban the internal combustion engine," Lindner told the Funke Media Group in an interview published on Friday. Germany has formed an alliance with Italy and some Eastern European countries opposing the planned phase-out of internal combustion engines unless cars running on e-fuels are exempted from the ban. Lindner's comments came after France's Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said the EU must stick to the planned ban. "We cannot say there is a climate emergency but retreat from the transition to electric vehicles," Le Maire said Monday on France Info television. "We are ready to fight on this as it is an environmental mistake and an economic mistake." Lindner said that by supporting the proposed ban in its current from, France is not fully taking into account that battery-electric cars are more expensive than ICE cars. This will make mobility less affordable for many people after combustion cars are banned, he said. Lindner said Le Maire "knows full well that car mobility could become more and more expensive for many hard-working people. We must take these concerns seriously." 'Inconsistent messages' Le Maire said that Europe was five to 10 years behind China in developing EVs, and needed to avoid sending inconsistent messages to automakers, including French companies such as Renault and Stellantis. "Saying we will go toward electric but remain a little with combustion is economically incoherent and dangerous for industry," Le Maire said. "It’s not in our national interest, it’s not in the interest of carmakers, and it's not in the planet’s interest." Porsche and VW Group have invested in e-fuel development. The fuels are hydrolized from water and carbon dioxide in a process that can use only sustainable energy – but in very large amounts that critics say could be better used elsewhere. E-fuels are also prohibitively expensive at this stage, although proponents say the cost will come down with scale. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume sees e-fuels as a carbon-free way of driving combustion engine cars such as its iconic 911 in the future. (ANE)
