  1. Alfa Romeo to launch BMW X5 and X1 rivals - Autocar

    Quote

Alfa Romeo's next all-new cars are likely to be dictated by the rapid growth of the highly profitable SUV segment - starting with the Stelvio mid-sized SUV, and potentially growing to include all-new larger and smaller models.

The Stelvio will be revealed at the Los Angeles motor show in November before going on sale in mid-2017.

Alfa Romeo CEO Reid Bigland says it will stand out from rivals such as the BMW X3 through a combination of better driving dynamics, more advanced technology and more emotive styling. "When people drive that car,' they will understand we are being true to the Alfa DNA," said Bigland.

Beyond that, Bigland declined to confirm any new models, but conceded: "The whole world is gravitating to SUVs. A few years ago an Alfa Romeo or Maserati SUV would have been sacrilegious, but now? It makes sense to give customers what they want. We must keep an eye on consumer preferences."

Asked if an SUV could be Alfa Romeo's halo model, potentially displacing the launch of a BMW 7 Series-rivalling model above the Alfa Giulia, Bigland added: "10 years ago I'd have said we need the saloon to credibly take on the Germans. Now, the explosion in growth of SUV sales changes that. I'm not saying we don't do the saloon, but it might not be next on the list."

A larger, BMW X5-sized SUV or a coupé-styled version of the Stelvio have been mooted for launch in 2018, with a smaller X1 rival also believed to be under discussion. While Bigland refused to talk about specific models, he insisted that driving dynamics would be key to any new launches, probably ruling out a seven-seater.

"Whatever car Alfa Romeo makes must stand apart for its agility, noise and general driving experience," he said. "A large SUV can work in that space - the Maserati Levante proves that - but it's a five, not seven-seater."

  2. FCA is Running out of Money to Revive Maserati and Alfa Romeo - Automobile Magazine

Sergio Marchionne’s pivot to premium to secure a long-term future for FCA is in trouble. Even as it struggles to get the much-anticipated Giulia into showrooms, Alfa Romeo is reconsidering plans to launch smaller and larger sedans built off the same basic architecture. Sources in Italy say the Giulia-based Alfa Spider and Coupe have also been pushed back. Instead, Alfa is now pinning its hopes on the two new SUV models due in 2016 and 2017.

The small sedan, designed to replace the front-drive Giulietta hatchback, is a problem because the Giulia’s rear drive hardware won’t scale down to Audi A3 and Mercedes A-Class territory, and FCA’s only available front-drive architecture is Fiat/Dodge/Chrysler-based. The future of the large Alfa sedan, tentatively labeled 166, hinges on plans to replace the slow selling Ghibli and Quattroporte four-doors with a single vehicle. A closely related large Alfa sedan would enable FCA to share cost and manufacturing capacity.

Contrary to earlier reports, the gorgeous Maserati Alfieri Coupé is said to be still on track for a 2018 launch, with a Roadster version following in 2020. But while the next-gen GranTurismo and GranCabrio twins are still listed in the cycle plan for 2018 and 2019, there is now talk of instead launching a Macan-size Maserati crossover – based on the larger of the two Alfa SUVs – to complement the strong selling Levante and generate urgently needed cash.

  3. Alfa's plans get fuzzy fast - Autonews

Fiat Chrysler’s resurrection of Alfa Romeo continued this year with production of the new Giulia sedan and the flexible Giorgio platform upon which it rests. That platform will underpin most future Alfa Romeo crossovers, sedans and coupes.

FCA said this year that it was shaking up the timeline for Alfa, so many of the earlier projections no longer apply.

4C and 4C Spider: No freshenings are planned before 2019. A more powerful GTA variant is still under consideration.

Giulia: The long-delayed midsize sedan is to arrive in U.S. showrooms late this year. In 2017, the Giulia is to get an alternative engine: a 2.0-liter, turbo inline-four.

Stelvio: The midsize crossover targeting the Audi Q5 is expected to be revealed in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show and debut in early 2017. It will share the Giulia’s underpinnings and engine range.

Large sedan: Alfa Romeo seems to have shelved its plans for a new flagship, a longer and larger version of the Giulia, to rival the Audi A6 and BMW 5 series.

Roadster: Because of declining global roadster sales, Alfa Romeo has frozen development of a larger roadster than the Mazda-based Fiat 124 Spider underpinned by the Giorgio platform and sharing the Giulia’s powertrain offerings.

Midsize coupe: This Giulia derivative is set to compete with the BMW 4-series coupe and the Audi A5.

Large crossover: Alfa Romeo has long planned a large crossover, mainly for the U.S. and China. The production model will share its underpinnings with the Stelvio and compete with the Audi Q7 and BMW X5.

Compact hatch/sedan and coupe: Alfa Romeo is still running numbers to decide whether to base the Giulietta heir on a shortened Giorgio platform — with a longitudinally mounted engine and rear-wheel drive such as the BMW 1 series — or on the current compact platform with a transversely mounted engine and front-wheel drive such as the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz A class.
