It's like having Manchester United as the opposition - that's how Audi described doing battle with BMW in the executive saloon market. The analogy was made by the firm's UK boss, Kevin Rose, as he revealed a revised A4 will be in showrooms in November.
The launch is 12 months earlier than originally planned, and it's been brought forward because the nerves are jangling at Audi - the move is aimed squarely at upstaging the forthcoming all-new 3-Series. "Beating BMW on volume, image and customer satisfaction are all part of our mission statement," Rose added.
We revealed pictures of the new A4 saloon and estate in issue 814, but have now learned it will make its world debut at next month's Paris Motor Show and go on sale here before Christmas. Every body panel has been changed apart from the roof, the engines have been pulled back four centimetres to aid weight distribution and the suspension has been reworked.
Rose also told us a four-seater coupé based on the A4, with stand-alone styling and unique engines, should appear on forecourts in 2006. The same year is pencilled in for Audi's answer to the X5. Possibly badged A7, the SUV was seen in concept form as the Pike's Peak at last year's Detroit exhibition. The production version will have a higher roofline and an MPV-like interior.
