Stellantis will turn Turin factory into hub for EVs, Maserati cars
Mirafiori plant will be center for electrification

MILAN -- Stellantis plans to retool its factory in Turin, Italy, into an electric-vehicle hub, transferring production of two Maserati models to the Mirafiori plant.

The move is intended to increase efficiency and safeguard jobs as the automaker shifts to selling more electric vehicles.

Stellantis will assign Mirafiori a new electrified platform to build Maserati sedans between 2022 and 2024, making the factory, where the automaker already produces the Fiat New 500 battery-electric minicar, the group's center for electrification in Italy.

The Mirafiori factory is the historic center of Fiat, employing some 50,000 workers in its heyday in the 1970s when it used to produce more than 600,000 cars a year.

The plant currently builds the Maserati Levante SUV as well as the Fiat New 500.

Italian newspaper La Repubblica on Saturday reported that Stellantis could increase production of the combustion-engine Fiat 500 at Mirafiori by moving some volumes there from Tychy, Poland.

At Mirafiori, Stellantis will have one manufacturing process to make combustion engines, hybrids, and electric powertrains.

    Maserati EV platform

Stellantis, which was formed from the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group earlier this year, will build the Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans at Mirafiori, shifting from the nearby site of Grugliasco.

One of the first actions will be to create a new electrified platform specific for Maserati, Stellantis said.

"Stellantis is working with determination and alacrity to anticipate and prepare for the energy transition of all its Italian industrial sites," the company said in a statement Monday.

The goal is to improve performance at the plants "to give this country a strategic role among the group’s main domestic European markets," Stellantis said.

Future production of the New 500 is also confirmed in Turin, the automaker said, after presenting its plan in Rome to the industry and labor ministers and unions.

    No job losses

All 1,100 workers and functions in Grugliasco will move to Mirafiori by 2024 with no overall impact on jobs in the area, Stellantis said without giving details about what happens to the Grugliasco site after that date. Assembly operations will move immediately.

Grugliasco is 4 km (2.5 miles) from Mirafiori. Its workers have often moved between the two sites based on production needs.

The decision marks the end of full car manufacturing at the Grugliasco plant less than a decade after it started production of Maserati cars.

Stellantis said it will allocate more electrification-related activities to Mirafiori.

    Italy overhaul

Stellantis' production in Italy has been under scrutiny for costing more than elsewhere in Europe.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares told Italian unions in February that production costs at Fiat's factories in Italy were up to four times more than at PSA's plants in France or Spain for a similar model, mainly because of lower-than-expected sales rather than high labor costs.

In June, the automaker decided to reorganize output at the Melfi plant in southern Italy, its largest facility in the country, on a single enhanced line that will merge two existing ones with unchanged capacity. It will build four medium-segment electric vehicles, for different brands, starting in 2024.

The company said in July it would build one of its three European battery factories in Italy, at the Termoli site, 300 km east of Rome. The plant currently makes internal combustion engines.

Italy's Industry Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti said in a statement that there was an ongoing "huge effort" to support the Termoli gigafactory initiative with public funds.

Italy's government has sought assurances from Stellantis that Italy will remain one of the main countries where it builds cars as the EV shift jeopardizes thousands of manufacturing jobs.

Stellantis last month finalized plans for Daimler to join its European battery venture.

Chrysler as Chrysler LLC, FCA US.

They produce some of ZF 8HP transmissions called 845RE and 850RE. They are not used in Alfa Romeo and Maserati products which have ZF sourced transmissions like ZF 8HP50.

Even FCA US products are using ZF sourced transmissions for Hemi engines.

  3. Stellantis Announces $229 Million Investment in Kokomo, Indiana, Operations to Accelerate Electrification Plans

    • Announcement is one piece of a long-term strategy and electrification plan shared during the company’s EV Day
    • Investment will retool three Kokomo plants to produce electrified, next-generation, eight-speed transmissions; 662 jobs retained
    • “Multi-tool” of transmissions can be paired with internal combustion, mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid propulsion systems
    • New transmission will deliver improved fuel economy, provide pure-electric range and help vehicles meet future emission regulations
    • Electrified transmission diversifies product portfolio of Kokomo-area plants
    • Leverages core competencies and skill sets of local workforce
October 7, 2021 , KOKOMO, Indiana - Stellantis today announced it would invest a total of $229 million in three of its Kokomo, Indiana, plants to help the company reach its goal of achieving 40% low-emission vehicle sales in the U.S. by 2030. This announcement, which will retain 662 jobs, comes three months after the company laid out its long-term electrification strategy, where it committed to investing $35 billion through 2025 in electrification and software.

Stellantis Head of Powertrain Operations Brad Clark made the announcement during an event at the Kokomo Transmission Plant attended by Indiana Governor Eric J. Holcomb, Kokomo Mayor Tyler Moore and UAW Region 2B Director Wayne Blanchard, along with other elected officials and community leaders.

The investment will support retooling of the Kokomo Transmission (KTP), Kokomo Casting and Indiana Transmission plants to produce the fourth-generation eight-speed transmission. This new transmission will have the flexibility to be paired with internal combustion engines, as well as mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid propulsion systems, for vehicles across the Jeep®, Ram, Chrysler and Dodge brands. It will deliver improved fuel economy, provide pure-electric range and help vehicles meet future emission regulations.

“This investment and this transmission represent an important stepping stone in getting us to 2030 and further expanding our battery electric offerings,” said Clark. “This new eight-speed is the ‘multi-tool’ of transmissions. It is a versatile transmission that can be adapted for a variety of applications, allowing us the flexibility to adjust our production as consumer demand for electrified vehicles grows over the next decade. It also offers consumers the opportunity to get familiar with this technology and explore all of the benefits that can come from electrification.”

The new, fourth-generation, eight-speed transmission will capitalize on a number of common parts within the different versions – transmission gear train/clutch, mechatronics, mechanical pump and E-pump motor. It also will have the flexibility for unique parts to adapt to the various electrification options. These parts include the eMotor, torque converter and power electronics.

Adding electrified transmission assembly also diversifies the product portfolio of the Kokomo operations. In March 2020, Stellantis announced it would invest $400 million to convert Indiana Transmission Plant II to the Kokomo Engine Plant to produce the GMET4 engine, the company’s 2.0-liter Global Medium Engine inline four-cylinder turbo. Production is expected to launch later this year.

This investment also leverages the core manufacturing competencies of the Kokomo operations and the local workforce in the areas of casting, machining and assembly, all of which will be needed as the market transitions to an electrified future.

“As our industry continues to change, our focus must continue to be on our most valuable asset – our people,” said Clark. “This transmission program will bring new opportunities for our current workforce, as well as the manufacturing workforce of the future.”

The second-generation eight-speed transmission has been a workhorse of the company’s powertrains since production began in 2012. KTP celebrated the 5 millionth eight-speed transmission built on Sept. 30. It is the current transmission option on the Jeep Wrangler, Gladiator and Grand Cherokee; Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer; Ram 1500; Dodge Charger, Challenger, Durango; and Chrysler 300 models.

No. New models will be BEV. The whole range will be BEV after 2030.

I repeat it once more. Grand Cherokee was the most sold unibody SUV more expensive than $50k. That's premium market territory.

Let's say that the Grand Cherokee goes from Ford to Lincoln. It covers all markets.

It's technically impossible to have an air suspension and MacPherson combination.

From what I've heard Italian dealers were very dissatisfied with Alfa ala DS product plan. They are also not happy with Alfa BEV only plan.

Can't speak about US dealers except from what I've heard in general for all ex-FCA brands sold in US. They were dissatisfied with the first plan shown to them by Stellantis.

Speaking about Manley. He left Stellanits for a new job. How interesting...

    Che a numeri farebbero ancor meno… 😌

    Comunque grosso modo si avranno:

    - Tonale

    - Kid

    - newStelvio

    - newGiulia

    poi dopo il ‘26

    - Seg. C hatch

    - newTonale

    - Seg. D sedan

    - Seg. E SUV

Dalle rinnovate Giulia e Stelvio tutto BEV.

I have a feeling that all STLA Large based cars may have at least MHEV if not PHEV option. It could be very important for the US market.

And it's doable on STLA Large.

Some would call it 48V HEV.

Electric motor is inside of transmission. Getrag sourced 7HDT300.

    😂

I was saying that French will bring nothing good.
